Saw him a few months prior, Fall '86 w/The Band. His physical condition was not good, the voice was fine, he motioned for a chair during the 2nd song & sat the rest of the set.
His story to the judge in Japan was he asked his wife to send him some "medication", he claimed that was not supposed to be heroin. He spent almost 3 months in jail waiting for the trial. The judge rejected the claim, gave him 2 1/2 years, suspended the sentence & banned him from the country for a number of years. Danko said he cleaned up after his release.
He was in much better shape when I was him in the Summer of '89 w/Ringo's 1st All Star Band. Died of congestive heart failure about 5 months later.
