The Return of JRAD

I wonder why the 6/4 Red Rocks show was canceled.

Great news!

I doubt the Frost shows will happen this year.

The campus is still closed to the public

Oh, that hurts, Nancy.

I hope you're wrong, Nancy. I was just thinking Friday at the Wiltern and Saturday at the Frost would make for a sweet little weekend.

I hope I'm wrong too, Mike. August is still a long way off, right? I started volunteering as as usher last year, and did get a heads up about concert cancellations, and if I hear anything for certain I'll be sure and share the good or bad news.

>Will performances happen in spring 2021?

In-person concerts are currently not permitted at Stanford University. While we are hopeful to be able to offer performances later in 2021, all advertised performances may need to be altered, rescheduled, or canceled entirely. In the event the performances cannot proceed as planned, options for refunds, exchanges, and donations will be available. Each day brings more news—but through it all, we promise to keep our patrons informed.

Bummer about the Red Rocks shoe being scrapped.

7/31 in Montana might be a good target since we're planning on doing some camping up that way about then...

Red Rocks was cancelled because it was a sold out show and Red Rocks will be operating at reduced capacity in June. I think the normal capacity is about 9500 and Red Rocks was trying to get authorization for 2500. No real way to equitably reduce the numbers...

https://theknow.denverpost.com/2021/02/26/red-rocks-capacity-increase-20...

The CT show is a pod show. That is is probably all we can expect through most of the summer sad

Ah, thank you for the info Zooey.

I pulled the trigger on tickets for the Frost. Things may change, but mid-August sounds like it might be a safe bet.

I don't think any of those dates happen. High Sierra isn't happening this year and I don't see Frost happening. I suspect the summer tour gets canceled in the coming weeks.

Certainly the indoor shows are not happening. I would expect to see more summer pod shows announced.

It seems the industry is expecting to gear up after Labor Day, and is scrambling to move festivals to September and October.

When JRAD cancelled Red Rocks, they also cancelled a show in October at the Nashville Brooklyn Bowl that conflicts with the new Jazzfest dates.

I agree there will be "pod" shows this summer, but I believe all of these big GA shows on the west coast won't happen as scheduled.

Looks like Frost shows really might be happening..

>We’re thrilled to announce that Stanford Live is returning with outdoor socially distanced programming at Frost Amphitheater. We’ll start on April 29 with Stanford Under the Stars: Movie Nights at Frost and then transition into live performances in the summer. It’s been a year since we hosted our last performance, and we’ve worked closely with health and university officials to be able to provide a safe experience for all. We can’t wait to feel the energy of in-person events again.

Yeah for gilded class shows!

That's real good news. I'm glad I got tickets.

Edit: Tickets were only $45+fees, Slack. Is that really gilded class?

I believe the Boston show is gonna be bumped again, to May 2022.

I had tickets to the Artpark show which was canceled last year and option to keep them for the rescheduled show on 8/20 this year but chose to get a refund.  Uncertainty sucks when trying to make travel plans.

They allowed 10k at the Yankees yesterday while at the same time predicting a late April surge. To me that says if the city/state has a stake in the profits it’s allowed but remember no parties at home...

FROST ED

JRAD just cancelled Pacific NW shows for late July. Bummer

..

346B308C-0868-4576-9B3C-2AB71BF7D237.jpeg

I grabbed tix for Great South Bay last week and it was postponed to 2022 yesterday. Dammit

Is Peach Fest really happening this year?

Dang it.  With everyone getting vaccinated, I was really hoping that all the shows would be back this summer.   All vaccinated up and nowhere to go.

^^^^i was thinking the same thing. Wonder if the decision was COVID related or something else. Cuthbert still shows other shows happening, including slightly stooped a few days before JRAD date. But there isn't many shows on their calendar at the moment. Portland Blues Fest still happening in early July, but will be a pod show and limited to th a few hundred people.

There's a lot to be considered with all this, but just because shows are officially canceling doesn't mean that nothing is going to be happening.

If the bands, promoters & venues are willing to take less money and still figure out how to make it work, the shows could go back on sale at limited numbers, which could not happen if the existing show tix were still all out there.

It's difficult for promoters & venues to even open their doors if they're only allowing in 15% - 25% of their capacity, and it's difficult for bands to tour with all their road expenses at those capacities, but certainly all three of those entities are at various levels of desperate to start up again, and the first step would be to officially cancel the existing full-sold shows.

I'm just guessing here, but I'd be really surprised if things don't start opening up for the summer, as long as people don't start packing the ICUs again.

I don't really understand what was announced yesterday about California, that in June all restrictions will be lifted (I'm thinking that's mostly a PR move by Gavin The Good to get people off his recalled back) but does that mean that outside AND inside venues can go back to full capacity in June?

Does that mean they will? And will people be willing to pack back into places like the Fillmore, Yoshi's Jazz Club (or the most packed inside venue in the region, The Grate Room?) I'm vaccinated but I'm not sure how I will feel about any places like those.

Time will tell, but I wouldn't give up hope for some shows this summer.

> (I'm thinking that's mostly a PR move by Gavin The Good to get people off his recalled back)

that's exactly what it's about. of course businesses might not put profits first and might choose to be responsible and continue taking necessary precautions to keep staff and patrons safe. yeah..

anyway, it's going to be interesting to see how it all plays out in California. and yes, I am in favor of vaccine passports.

the reality is that until  most people on the planet are vaccinated, it's all so premature to return to business as usual. nobody wants to hear that though.

I want a two-week JRAD residency in the Grate Room, full vax and mask required.

I expect the remaining two California JRAD dates to be canceled in the next week or two. No way they come out west for two shows.

I don't really understand what was announced yesterday about California, that in June all restrictions will be lifted (I'm thinking that's mostly a PR move by Gavin The Good to get people off his recalled back) but does that mean that outside AND inside venues can go back to full capacity in June?

I believe that is exactly what this means.

I'd say the CA shows will likely hold up as scheduled - it's not like the band was going to just hang out for 2 weeks between those gigs, however, that single MT date may be on the block. JRAD seems to have been favoring those weekend-ish regional runs anyway. It is being widely reported that CA currently has "best COVID numbers" nationwide, opposed to the sad and worst numbers coming out of  MI... and PA, NJ, NY, and FL which apparently show those 5 states accounting for nearly half of all new cases in U.S.

MT show has been cancelled .... from jambands.com>

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead have canceled a trio of shows in the Pacific Northwest.

The impacted shows include a July 29 stop at the Cuthbert Amphitheater in Eugene, Ore., a July 30 stop at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle, and a July 31 stop at the KettleHouse Amphitheater in Bonner, Mont.

There are currently no replacement dates on JRAD’s calendar, but this story is still developing.

“We look forward to getting the opportunity to return to the Pacific Northwest someday soon,” the band wrote. “Thank you all for your patience.”

###

Their website has been updated to reflect this change... and the 2 California shows are still listed.... fingers crossed!

full vax and mask required.

I am down with the full Vax but I am done with the masks. If I have to wear one in a venue then I will wait until that requirement is over.

I don't see JRAD coming out to the west coast for just two shows. They will likely use that July/August time frame to tour on the east coast where they can play more shows with less distance between.

I'd go to a show masked... and my new employer sells mountain lion masks, cool!

https://store.openspace.org/collections/accessories/products/mountain-li...

mountain lion.png

....do you also expect them to CXL that stand-alone July 4th CA show too?

LOL, High Sierra was pushed to 2022, I imagine they will be there then.

Frost JRAD looking more and more likely

>Among the changes: After first opening to the campus community, the Anderson Collection at Stanford University and the Cantor Arts Center will open to the public at 25% capacity on April 21. Stanford Live’s Frost Amphitheater will also reopen in the spring with outdoor movies, and during the summer months will transition to live performances. More information about tickets will be announced soon.

How will they work partial capacity when they are sold out of full capacity?   Will it be a random lottery on who gets in for this or any other scheduled show?

The Frost show isn't sold out yet, Ken. Maybe what's on sale isn't for full capacity?

I just bought a ticket for Stanford last night.

That's a re-scheduled show, right? Were ticket-holders allowed refunds for that?

If not, they must not have sold out the venue originally, and if so they are probably re-selling limited numbers now, but if things keep going the way they have been around here, by August 14th & especially at an outdoor venue things could be pretty much wide open again.

(Personally, as a grumpy old man I kind of like the idea of limited capacities & distancing. I'm really looking forward to going to the Giants game tomorrow night, with plenty of room! Damn kids! Get off my legroom!!!)

As for a mask, I hate colds and have gotten used to wearing the damn things, so I may well continue to wear one.

You damned dirty hippies.

California is opening everything up at 100 percent capacity starting June 15, with masking, testing and vaccine verification requirements for large scale events.

That's a great idea and I hope it turns out that way, but it won't take much for things to go awry, and Santa Clara County might be a stick in the mud as well.

Still, one can hope for the best.

Just bought one! Hope the AXS ticket app works better than the other JRAD show I used it at, in Seattle, the app crashed -- unhappy fans at the gate.

^^^ Lucky east coasters!

...below face on the evil StubHub for tonight's Wellmont show

^^^ Lots of tickets on Cash or Trade too

10/07 Wellmont Weirdness

TLEO with a China Cat groove; China Cat with a Rider vibe.

If we had wheels, I think I'd go find a ticket tonight.

There were tons of free tickets all 3 nights, nobody went without. I didn't see a single finger in the air.

The first night, we discovered how much better the sound is at the Wellmont in the upstairs, rather than on the over-packed floor.
Consequently, we bought good balcony tix for the next 2 nights, so I had my GA floors to give away. Couldn't even find a taker.

Excellent run, with a nice arc of energy.
Echoes was definitely a highlight Sat night. Honestly, though, so many great moments each night.
They are so good at taking songs way out there, as well as wrapping little teases & quotes into the fore-&-back-ground with perfect prankster precision.
Plus, it seems like the scene really just contains good people. There's really no dirtbag factor. Maybe it's just the financial exclusivity? But no, cuz it also seems pretty free of douchebags.

Anyway, my 2 cents. Very drawn to this music, it seems like the next good thing to do with these songs.
They take songs I'm long-weary of hearing, and re-wire my experience into a fresh one of wonder & joy & appreciation of life.
And that's the whole fucking thing for me, at this point.
If I've found that again, I'm good.

Tom Hamilton was playing with a broken collar bone.
Hockey injury, apparently.

Anyway, he had his guitar slung over his right-shoulder only, not across his back, to the other shoulder.
So that looked awkward. He also had a stool set up where he could sit and wedge his leg up, to be at an angle to take the weight off.
He looked to be in real pain the first night, but either improved or hid it better the next 2.
Total badass stepping-up, though. He does produce some great jams.

Bummer to hear about TH being injured.

Maybe Billy Strings can lend a hand at the Frost

I Have two JRAD Frost tickets to trade for 2 Stu TXR (either day) tickets.

Thnx!

JRAD  @ Frost on Sat might be a dry weather day...

Rain or shine, it's will be great. But yeah, doesn't look like much rain in the forecast for Saturday, possibly later in the evening..

Traffic/Parking  could get messy, it's homecoming weekend at Stanford.

And Stricter rules listed for entry this year:

https://live.stanford.edu/venues/frost-amphitheater/what-to-bring

I'll be there, if it's not pouring.

I'm looking forward to it.

Excited for this show to be FINALLY happening tonight.  Will be there, rain or shine, with a kid in tow who is probably more jazzed than I am!

We will be in line early by Galvez entry  'tailgating'  come say hi.

So upset to miss the Frost show today, but I got put on a plane to back east. You'all have fun for me.

Any cheapskate parking within 1-2 miles of Frost?

Hope to see some of you tonight!

Looks like rain will begin later in the evening, like after 10pm -- have fun all!
I'll be at Zero, hope to see other Zoners there, too.

Nancy!

Long time!- if you are around come see me posted up ROB in a cowboy hat...

Wish I could be there, but this rescheduled date just didn't work out for me.

Anyone know where to hear audio of the 2nd & 3rd Wellmont shows?  They haven't hit the Archive.

Ditto the middle Phil/Friends CO show (9/17).

Yeah, I know.  I'm spoiledwink

Damn. And I only saw the 2nd set.

These guys go deep, way out, weird, heavy and shredding.

And they did it all in an hour & twenty minutes.

What a great set. That Other One & Morning Dew... damn. And who jams out Touch of Grey & One More Saturday Night like THAT?!?

This is a serious band.

And how fun was it to find myself in a zoner cluster, rocking out with Nancy, Pierce, Johnny, WALSTIB & his better half, and so many others all around me who I knew.

I couldn't help but think of the history of the area, with Jerry meeting his friends Bobby, Pig, Billy, Phil, Hunter, David Nelson and others just minutes/a few miles away from that classic spot.

And my own history there.

Add another one to that.

A GREAT set, and I get the feeling I missed a damn good 1st set.

This is not a band to be trifled with.

Glad you had that experience, Lance!

Yeah, I've been saying this band is the next thing for us to do with these songs.
Feels like a natural progression of exploration...reverent, mockingly genius, and often just plain balls-out fucknuttery.
My new favorite band, with or without acid.

Nancy/Pierce

Thx for the space. Great show & Zoner Hang

GD on Steroids...

and Thx to Mother Nature!

> These guys go deep, way out, weird, heavy and shredding.

And they don't always wait for the second set to go there. Sounds like it was a great time. Wish I wuz there.

The second set was played in the first set.

So good to see everyone and be back on the Farm.

just..fuckin Wow.

J  is for JAZZ. I love JRAD.

We decided that they need to play 2 shows at the Frost next time, one Saturday night and a Sunday afternoon show. It's how the all the great bands roll.

^I agree!

What a wonderful (((holy))) place, full of fantastic people.  Nothing but smiles and kindness wherever I roamed.  Arrived close to show time and walked about, finding that there was plenty of room in front of the stage.  Ended up grooving with some new friends a couple of "rows" from the rail.  Everyone was chill and there appeared to be no "territorial" concerns.  So happy to see a number of people whom I haven't been with for 2-or-so-years (Zoners, TXR folks, and several Ashkenaz denizens).

Grateful to spend setbreak and the second set with the aforementioned Zoners.

I missed the 2019 JRAD show and nearly bypassed last night's.  I'm glad that I got that ticket and I have no plans to skip any furthur JRAD shows.

Can't wait for the next gig and hope to see more of you all.

>>>Nancy/Pierce - Thx for the space<<<

Yeah, that was very cool, thanks from me as well.

I was delayed getting there, and then getting parked and finding the venue in the dark (thank goodness I could follow Dancing In The Streets through the campus) took some time, so I figured I'd be lurking in the back or on the sides.

Just as I walked in Pierce crossed my path and he immediately invited me to their space, dead center about 20 rows back. I was thinking I'd be encroaching, as my experiences in that place in the distant past were that it gets very packed, but there was plenty of room all around and even a tall goof like me wasn't in anyone's way.

And after seeing that 1st set setlist I'm really sorry I missed that one.

Next time.

Just got back from Palo Alto after a super rainy drive.  I was hoping to catch Willie Nelson in Wheatland, CA tonight but it was cancelled due to weather.  We made it through the show last night without a drop of rain though, which was a real bonus.

Anyway, WOW that band does everything right, what a special show in a special venue with a crowd that was totally turned on and tuned in.  No tourists, no wook factor, just shiny happy people who enjoy getting their skulls fucked.  What a simply fantastic show by a fantastic band.  Me and my son loved every minute. These guys are not to be missed!

The Frost was exactly where we needed to be.

Kudos to the entire production.. special moment when  the band finished and everyone was still groovin and smiling.

I guess I must be having fun
The less we say about it the better
Make it up as we go along
Feet on the ground
Head in the sky

>>>>>>Ditto the middle Phil/Friends CO show (9/17)

Ditto

Lots of high energy rockin and not a dull moment...no "go pee" tunes.

Johnny (skudebro)-Thanks for your help after the show. I think i'd still be looking for my car now, we were so turned around (in more than one way!) when we walked out of the venue. a good hang my friend. glad you made it home ok...see ya at DNB Friday
