Rest In Peace, Pat DiNizio

From The Smithereens Official Facebook Page:

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Pat DiNizio, lead singer and songwriter of the influential New Jersey rock band, The Smithereens - America's Band.

Pat was looking forward to getting back on the road and seeing his many fans and friends. Please keep Pat in your thoughts and prayers.

And from me:

Very sorry to hear this terrible news. Pat DiNizio was a great guy, a friend to his fans, supported the local NJ music scene and was proud of his family heritage. That’s to say nothing of his incredible songwriting and amazing singing voice. This hurts. Rest In Peace, Pat.

This made me cry, I'm very upset

RIP Pat

thanks for the music

(((RIP)))

I just woke up and saw this very sad news. Even though great fame passed Pat by, he has always been one of my favorites and that Smithereen sound was something that one could hear a few notes of new music on the radio and immediately identify it as The Smitereens. Pat was a stellar songwriter, kind soul and grand supporter of those who were trying to break into the business. Although he had been in ill health for the last decade, once he stepped on stage all his ailments seemed to dissolve and the rock and roll animal took over. This one is going to hurt. My one wish is that he was able to pick up his guitar and play one last time before his death.

I'm going to miss you, Pat. RIP.

Very sad news. Pat was a gem. RIP

Damn...

RIP Pat.

A message from Jim Babjak, Dennis Diken, and Mike Mesaros:

Today we mourn the loss of our friend, brother and bandmate Pat DiNizio.

Pat had the magic touch. He channeled the essence of joy and heartbreak into hook-laden three minute pop songs, infused with a lifelong passion for rock & roll.

Our journey with Pat was long, storied and a hell of a lot of fun. We grew up together. Little did we know that we wouldn't grow old together.

Goodbye Pat. Seems like yesterday.

Jimmy, Mike, Dennis

I saw that this morning. RIP Pat. I met the band when they played at Hofstra in 91(?) and they were a very cool bunch of guys.

Although not widely known, Curt Corbain stated on a few occasions that Nirvana's Nevermind was his attempt to channel Pat DiNizio and The Smithereens. They tried to get Especially for You producer, Don Dixon, to produce that album but he asked for too much money.

bummer - I liked those guys

just listened to their christmas album last night.  good stuff.

I saw the Smithereens once. Great show with high energy. RIP Pat.

6 weeks later and I'm still ripped up about Pat's death. Since the beginnings of The Smithereens, he was one of my favorite songwriters. I have so many memories of shows in the NY metro area and a few in Denver, including a wonderful solo show at The Bluebird. If you were only familiar with the "hits," do yourself a favor and do some deep digging.
