Remembering our ol' pal Lites

Forums:

Got an e-mail from a former Zoner, NYC Ed, mentioning that today is 9 years since everybody's pal, Northern Lites, passed away.

Great guy who was a real presence in the day and provided some entertainment on this board.

As an Islander fan, I enjoyed going back and forth, giving him grief about his goddamned NY rangers and of course, the hated Yankees.

But it says something about him and the spirit of this board when a Red Sox fan e-mails me to ask I post something for a Yankee fan since Ed doesn't do much social media stuff anymore.

So here ya go. Here's to some great memories. Much love and comfort to his partner and the pals who were lucky enough to hold Chris close in their hearts.

I cut JoJo from this pic 'cause I didn't have his permission to post his pic. I think this is from an east coast Phil show.

Loved running into Lites, he was a good friend to a lot of East Coast zoners. Always a treat to see him at shows. Cue up some Railroad Earth and break out the good whiskey.

my lady and i rolled up to del fest. mr. and mrs. lites had a tent all set up and bed rolls out for us. Threw me a nice sack. 1st class all the way. Rest in peace brother.

i had just started on this board when he passed on and remember his memorial thread was long and heartfelt. Love to all.

Life is a blink between two eternities.

No way to forget him.

Lady Lites's heart is full and cracked at the same time. They had such a good time and deep love, unforgettable, unmistakable.

It won't fade away.

Always accommodating to us West Coast Freaks when we rolled into NYC.

RIP

As good a zoner, and by all accounts as good a person as could be found.

Never a wasted or superfluous post, always making a point, with an edge, and if you made the mistake of misspeaking or saying something dumb his razor sharp blade would slice you to ribbons before you could finish hitting the 'post message' button.

If you engaged with Northernlites on the black screen you better have your facts straight and your skin thick. But immediately after ripping you to shreds in one thread he would have your back in another.

I started on the zone right when Nancy had posted a photo of him with a different face photoshopped onto it after he had made a point to not post any images of him, and he went nuclear on her, a merciless attack that went on for a long time. From that my first impressions of him were that he was out of his mind, but over time I came to understand that he was just someone you didn't want to cross.

I had many interactions with him, mostly in the sports folder, and while often having to take his withering contempt for my teams and opinions, he also would acknowledge when something I said turned out to be right.

Over the years he was one of the zoners I really wanted to meet, and I had one chance, at a Phil show at the Warfield when either Hall or Jammin' Joel wanted to introduce me, but Phil was rockin' at the time and lites was TOTALLY in the groove with a huge smile on his face and I didn't want to disturb him (perhaps a bit intimidated by what he might say for interrupting him) so I passed. I would have liked to have shaken his hand.

Anyway, he was a Hall of Fame zoner, I still miss his commentary on the black screen and I still think of him when something in sports happens that he would have commented on or when the 49ers beat his Cowboys.

On it goes.
