RIP Mule, just saw this on
RIP Mule, just saw this on Wikepedia...
Adopted at birth by Hollywood talent agents, he grew up in Beverly Hills, California and was babysat by Marilyn Monroe,
Early career highlights...
In 1967, he began working as a session musician (specializing in electric bass) with a litany of notable blues, folk, and rock performers, including Mike Bloomfield, Nick Gravenites, Mississippi Fred McDowell, John Lee Hooker, Brewer & Shipley (a longstanding collaboration that encompassed their 1971 Top Ten hit "One Toke Over the Line"), Tom Fogerty, Maria Muldaur (who was in a relationship with Kahn for several years in the 1970s), Al Kooper, Jackie DeShannon, and Otis Rush.
Kahn first played with Garcia in May 1970 as the bassist of a jazz rock group that coalesced around Garcia and organist Howard Wales (who facilitated their introduction) during Monday night jam sessions at The Matrix, a San Francisco nightclub of the era; this ensemble would go on to record Hooteroll? (1971; credited to Garcia and Wales)

It was 22 years ago, 1996.
It was 22 years ago, 1996.
I remember he got about 2 inches on about page 5 in the
Marin Independant Journal newspaper. That was lame.
To add insult to injury, they arrested his wife when they came to the house because of the
small amount of heroin and/or coke they found.
I met him in the Warfield parking lot once before a show. Seemed like a good guy.
Rest in Peace.

Few people have lived a life
Few people have lived a life as interesting as Kahn’s. Born in Memphis, TN in 1947, John Kahn was adopted at birth by a pair of Los Angeles agents. He grew up in Beverly Hills, CA surrounded by the Hollywood elite, and was babysat as a child by a young Marilyn Monroe as she began to pursue her acting career.
awesome...

Good info here, thanks!
A rare event happened at a JGB show in Albany 93.
John Kahn broke a string!
Bonus was the Freight Train played while he replaced it.

I listen to John Kahn far
I listen to John Kahn far more the any other bass player. He was so good.
I've been studying how Phil and John play Sugaree differently.
"When the line comes "on the run..." Phil will either do a reverse major bass line run , you know from the high note to the low, or if he misses it, he'll pop the bass and hammer on and pull off the note an octave apart, nothing fancy but he lands right on the note Jerry is singing, and Phil is always in tune, always. Phil plays like he's almost strumming, but is ready to point out how cool the musical bridge is
When JK plays Sugaree its very complicated. The slower the song, the busier JK would get. Great to smoke a joint to.
JK was the man.

A lot of that early session
A lot of that early session work was done at Golden State Recorders on Harrison Street (where the Dead did their first recordings) which became the College for the Recording Arts in 1975. I attended from '76-'77, his picture (along with Merle's and a lot of the other people mentioned above) was on the wall outside the main studio.
Man loved his cigarettes.
RIP

Yep, Greenpeace Benefit. First show without Ron Tutt as well. Jerry came strolling down the street carrying his briefcase past the people waiting in line before the show, the usual big grin on his face. Good show but the wind screwed with the sound.
