40 years ago today I was waiting at my local Sam Goody's to open so I could be among the first on my block to purchase Talking Heads' Remain In Light. At that point of time, very few people had any idea what a monster album it was since there was a radio embargo on it until 10/08. I was smiling to myself because I already had heard a good portion of the album's songs but not from an advance copy...I had heard the songs live a few weeks previous in what will forever be burned into my memory as one of the top concerts of my life.
Back in late Sept of that year, I had been comped a few tickets to a concert that has been known as the Punk Woodstock...the Heatwave Festival at Mosport Raceway in Canada.. I could write about so many things starting with a late Friday night start of the road trip from Montclair, NJ, not really knowing where we were going once we got into Canada, and a day that included sets by The B-52s, The Pretenders, Elvis Costello and The Attractions, Rockpile (who wasn't even listed as a band that was going to play), The Rumour (without Graham Parker...boo) and a band that was listed on the bill but never showed up due to problems at the border, The Clash. We rolled into parking at Mosport around 9am and because of our comp tickets were allowed to go in before everyone else. That was a big bonus and we rolled out our blanket on the top of a small rise in the field and settled in. The music actually started on time and the acts came and went on schedule the whole day.
Finally, as the sun was setting, Talking Heads took the stage as their normal 4 piece band. In short order more and more musicians joined the core 4. Adrian Belew, Bernie Worell, Nona Hendryx and more soon swelled the band and they started playing songs from Remain In Light with all those amazing polyrhythmic explorations. Not only was this the first time anyone had heard any of those new songs, it was also the first time Talking Heads performed with an expanded lineup. As the 100,000 attendees turned into a shamanistic tribal dance party, a full moon rose directly above the stage. Talk about minds being blown. I don't think anyone was even close to expecting anything like what happened...not even the band. The band had, literally, just left the studio and flew to Canada for this gig. My words can't even come close to describing it. If you were there, you knew. I've met a few others that were and they also have their eyes glass over and speak in hushed tones about what they were a part of.
I made it home the next day and would tell anyone who would listen that they HAD to get the new Talking Heads album...it will change your world. Some listened and it did. Others came to the party a bit later and most people agree that Remain In Light is the top Talking Heads album. Of course the expanded performing band and how they came on stage is immortalized in film Stop Making Sense. The whole thing was a lot more polished then but seeing the raw genesis of the concept come to life for the first time could never be topped in my head.

One of the greatest albums
One of the greatest albums ever made.
A masterpiece.
The only problem with creating a masterpiece is there's often no where to go but down, and that's pretty much what happened with the Talking Heads after that.
Speaking In Tongues was very good, had some really good songs and was more successful, but for me it was still a disappointment after RIL. "What's the matter? You can't just keep doing THAT?!!?"
I foolishly passed on seeing the Remain In Light tour, which I have always regretted, but I feel incredibly fortunate to have seen them on what was their final tour, for Speaking in Tongues.
They were a truly great band, in the studio and also on the stage, and Remain In Light was their crowning achievement.
IMO.
I don't listen to albums much, but I believe I'll put that one one.

Nice reminiscence Tony. It
Nice reminiscence Tony. It is an excellent album, but it falls apart a little bit on Side 2. I'd rate it tied for 2nd with Speaking In Tongues, both behind the sublime Fear Of Music as their best studio effort.

One of the greatest albums
Agreed.
Some, like Herbal Dave, may disagree, Remain In Light has stood the test of time to my ears. When it comes up in rotation, I still get as jazzed listening to it as I did 40 years ago. I think it remains the Talking Heads album with the largest dose of the X factor. There is an underlying layer of primordial funk that connects to my DNA and gets me dancing every time.

Remain In Light is my
Remain In Light is my favorite Talking Heads album to this day.
So glad to hear you were in attendance at Heatwave. I have a Wolfgang's Vault download in my archive.
I saw a show on the Speaking In Tongues tour during my first quarter in college in 1983.
All night dance party with no intoxicants involved. Great show! Great band!

Awesome story, what a night
Awesome story, what a night to remember! I never did see the talking heads live. Remain in Light is definitely my #1. It's hard to pick a second.
David made Tina audition three times before he let her join his band.

Always been a fan of Adrian
Always been a fan of Adrian Belew (have met him), love what he contributed to the album (and similar with Bowie before hand, and King Crimson shortly after... thank you Frank Zappa for exposing the world to him)
Otherwise, LOVE David Byrne, fantastic album, love the live videos from the tour afterwards!

All night dance party with no
Which is pretty close to how it turned out for me. The whole trip to Heatwave came together in under 24 hours. My ex high school gf was working at SIR (Studio Instrument Rentals) at the time and her company provided the stage, lighting and backline for the show. It was only the day before that she was told they had a bunch of comps for the show. She called me to see if I was interested and I said, "Of course!" She wasn't that into the scene but loved Graham Parker and Elvis Costello and it didn't take much convincing by me to have her bring her boyfriend and I being my then fiancee to Canada. The logistics of the trip were rushed to say the least. One of the things that didn't quite come together was getting party favors for the show. All of us called everyone we could think of and could not find any cannabis anywhere. I had enough sensi to roll one good joint and we thought that was going to be it. While her boyfriend was at work he was able to get four hits of blotter. It would have to do. Considering we had to cross the border late at night, we had to plan on making it all invisible for a possible customs check. I had a some smelly leather moccasins that were delaminating and I pulled the leather apart, put the joint deep within the layers and stuck them back together then put them on me feet. Steve had cut his hand recently and took a Band-Aid, pulled apart the gauze section, put the blotter within and then put the Band-Aid on his finger. We passed through the border without a hitch but it pays to plan just in case.
Since we only had what we had and was not able to find anything else on sight, we decided to wait until the sun started setting before doing any of it. Finally it was time to blast off and I looked at Steve and told him let's go. We were all fairly ragged at that point for lack of sleep and miles travelled as well as it being a hot and muggy summer day so I hadn't noticed that Steve wasn't his usual talkative self. When he slowly went to take off the Band-Aid, he realize that besides the sweat of the day, his washing his hands after using the bathroom had melted the acid right into his cut. He realized that was the reason he felt high when he thought he hadn't taken anything. With that, he gave up his dibs on his share of the joint, took off the Band-Aid and proceeded to swallow it whole. Steve was really high that evening and I was very slightly buzzed.
Oh, well.
