Redneck Christmas Disaster Narrowly Averted

Forums:

My son is in town from college and the one holiday food thing he specifically asked for was boiled peanuts.  In Oregon, you just can't drive out to the country and find a boiled peanut stand like some places, so you have to make them yourself.  I have a great recipe that is better than most boiled peanut stands.

Anyway, boiling peanuts takes a long time and is best done outdoors unless you want your house to smell like a boiled peanut stand for a few days.  I dragged out an old propane grill that had a built in gas burner for boiling stuff.   Hadn't used it in years, but dusted it off, hooked it up, and got it going.  The peanuts were boiling for about an hour when I went outside to check on them and found the grill on fire with the hose connected to the five gallon propane tank just hanging there spewing out flames.  Was worried the whole thing was going to explode.

The water hose was disconnected for winter, but I was able to quickly dump a couple of buckets of water on it, which dampered the flames long enough to allow me to run in and disconnect the gas.  Then dumped about ten more buckets of water on it to finally put out the fire on all the burning plastic components. Melted plastic produces an awful lot of nasty soot that gets on everything and is very hard to clean.

Peanuts were just starting to get good, but had to throw them out after being exposed to all that plastic smoke.  Didn't get any pics.

How is your holiday cooking going?

So far, better than yours.  At least it did not blow up.

I got a start on the big dinner today. Lentil soup, potato salad, and I got the green bean casserole ready to put in the oven.

Tomorrow, pot o greens and a big salad.  (And a lot of cleaning)

Then on Wed bake the butternut squash and the casserole, heat up the greens,  pickle the cranberries, steam the few crablegs and saute the shrimp scampi, steam the broccoli and zucchini,  pasta alfredo if needed.   Oatmeal/ dark chocolate chip cookies baked fresh for desert.

Wow, Ken, that's a great title....redneck x-mas disaster. narrowly averted.....

Very entertaining, and very glad the problem did not increase!  wow....

Be careful with propane and flame!!  And boiled peanuts....can you use a microwave?

Has your son been laughing at the experience?

Sorry folks but theres no resemblance to redneck there in the least.

Sounds more to me like a clear cut case of suburban white man panic.

An actual redneck, emboldened of course by beer, would have never bothered with any water at all, and just reconnected the flaming hose, probably without wearing gloves, and continued the boil.
