Red Rocks for beginners

Forums:

My son and I are heading out to the JRAD show next week, followed by some Phish at Dick's. Is there a preferred spot for sound and sight? It shows doors opening an hour ahead of the show, but how early do you need to a get good spot? Any similar info for Dick's?

I personally prefer row 32, center for sound at Red Rocks. That's generally the sonic sweet spot, in my experience.

for sight row >25 so you see the sights beyond the stage rock.

top rail for the sound/view (think scene in titanic)

check out the museum

don't climb the rocks  haha

look for my mind i lost @ GD in the '80s

Is that mind you lost in the 80s worth finding, or is it just a horizontal replacement for my mind that I lost in the 80s?

If I didn't have mark as my own personal Sherpa for my first time at red rocks i'm pretty sure it would have ended in hypothermia and snakebite.

We've lost a lot of good people up there, E. There was no way in hell I was going to let that happen to you, my friend

Center is key. It can get bass heavy in spots because of standing waves. If you are doing the dash, use the stairs on the east side below stage right. The south ramps are about the slowest entrance.

tarp-dash strategy LOL

someone cue up that  panic or mule whatever you tube vid

That's why I'm looking for local knowledge. Is there any limit how early you can get in line? We have plenty of time.

its a long way to the top if you wanna rock n roll

You can get in line pretty early. If you have GA, and you want to be in the first 30 rows, definitely jump in line.

As Stringwang shared, south ramp is the slowest. The main entrance and the lower entrance from the north lot are the quickest. I prefer the lower north lot entrance.

I am looking for one ticket to JRAD for 8/31 show-

As always out an outdoor show.....

by the sound board.

Bring rain gear. If it does rain, it will be a cold rain.

I'm a little concerned about rain from the TX hurricane making it's way up here by the end of the week. I've seen gulf hurricanes make it rain non stop for days in Colorado. It's already what we call "monsoon season" but this could really bring it. The moisture just flows north along the Rockies.

If you want to avoid parking lot traffic from Denver fans post-show, the upper south and upper north lots are my favs

Nick needs this thread.

In my limited experience, to get a decent spot (30 - 40 rows center) w/o having to wait for long (ie arriving 4 to 5 ish) best bet is to hike all the way to the top lot (there's a trail along the side of the venue that ends right @ the line) & go in the top entry, it's all a downhill run once inside & the line is always much much shorter.  Of course this info is from 2008 & before, haven't been there since . . .

I have to disagree. If you are going in early for choice seating, the top entrance would not be my choice. The ticket check at the top is farther away  from the sound board than any other entrance.  This is a sold out show and will be full. Get there early and try to find entrance 1.

Its across the road from the dinosaur tracks. They are worth checking out if you go early enough. Park across from entrance 1 and walk up the road (road's closed to cars)  and around the bend and you will find dinosaur tracks.

Anyway, entrance 1 puts you in the north lots. It also allows easy access to I70 and Golden and Boulder after the show. Lower north is the easiest lot to get out of.

The south lot is where the party is. There is also a trail from the Trading Post that will take you by some very large sandstone formations. If you park on the south side, take trading post road to the lower entrance behind the stage.

See you there.

My advice was for getting "so so" seating when showing up late.  It was not for getting "choice seating".

I waited all day for "choice seating" once (4th or 5th rw center left, Dead in 03 2nd night), sound was way too loud, no view of environ's, nor reverb of sound off the rocks, & spent the entire show fighting off Wooks trying to invade our turf.  Waste of F-in time & effort.

I think nowadays the lots open 2hrs before the show and gates open 1hr before the show. There is also a curfew which I think is 11:30 on weeknights. It's not the 80s.....

Gates might be 90 before showtime. We saw RRE this summer. My friends got in line at 530 and it was before gates opened. They got us 6th row center. It was loud but it didn't suck. BTW, if it's windy, the closer the better.

I also have not had problems with seat crashers. I just tell them that this isn't going to work. You gotta leave. They leave.

E and I encountered a particularly aggressive space crasher at Red Rocks @ the Jacket shows last year.

I think I handled it pretty in a pretty humble, non aggressive, cool way; but to be honest, I wanted to go straight G on that motherfucker. Being a parent really does change you.

Bands w/Bob Weir in them tend to attract a Sketchier element

Problem is the "seats" are wide/deep enuff for 1-1/2 to 2 people.  Hell @ Panic 08 I even had a fight w/Nick & Gunner's friends who showed up mid 1st set & parked in front of me jabbering loudly smoking cigarettes.  They were like "who are you & WTF are you doing in OUR space?"  Yup the space I had gotten for them all by hiking up to the top w/the tarp & going in the top entry . . . this story is 1 of the reasons Nick is so mad @ me . . .

They were some foul mannered rubes alright; whole row had to practically call'em out.

Like a true Red Rocks veteran, Mark held his ground in a very civil yet assertive manner when reasoning failed which caused the bustas to shortly disperse, defeated and shamed.

Is there any chance you can email Nick and request he join us here on Viva, SS?

He's Excommunicated me for good, so no, I don't have his email & it would probably be counter productive for me to contact him about Viva anyway.  Us Sicilians know how to hold Grudges.

Bump

Lots of good input, my game plan is set for Red Rocks.

Is it possible to move from GA stands to GA field at Dicks? Our tix are in the stands.

You used to be able to sneak down

last year they were pretty tight about checking wristbands as you came back from bathrooms/ stands

post here if you get to red rocks early and want to meet up around venue or inside!

safe travels!

The key is first scoping out all of the wristband checkers from a distance and determine who is the most "unenthusiastic" about their job ... then have someone who already has a wristband take the lead and create a diversion for you by asking a very animated question of ticket checker and purposely holding their attention.    Again, the key is totally grabbing their attention even pointing to something small on your person or off in another direction while person without ticket is close behind and "slips on by".    Another thought I've had for diversion is to have a pocketful pennies and pull them out while asking checker if they accept pennies for beer and then proceed to drop handful of pennies on the ground in a direction to cause checker to look away while person behind slips by.
