Record Store Day 2017

Forums:

What'd everyone get?

It's like vinyl christmas today, a rainy & gloomy one up here in Maine.

Waited in line 45 min at the Bull Moose "warehouse" store, before I bailed on the line & just went to another Bull Moose a few miles away.

Got many goodies:

Grateful Dead - 7/29/66

Jaco Pastorius - a 3LP live box set from 1982

Crosby - live 10" from World Cafe last year

John Trudell - AKA Grafitti Man

Bowie - live L.A. 1974 3LP

U-Roy - Dread in a babylon

The Acid Test - Sound City 1/29/66

Mad Professor Meets Jah9

Playing Jaco first, so motherfreaking good with the big band backing.

the original demo cassette tape of the brian jonestown massacre has been pressed on vinyl......

i got one.....

its so fucking epicer!!

The mailman just dropped off Butthole Surfers Double Live.

I might see if the local has the Moana single later today.

Just back from RSD.

I picked up:

Grateful Dead 7/29/66

Neil Young - Decade

The Cars - Live at the Agora 1978

The Cure - Acoustic Hits

Deee-Lite

Janes Addiction - Been Caught Stealing

Madonna - Dance Mix

Notorious B.I.G.

Pickin' on Nirvana

Peter Tosh

My son is out with friends hitting up more of the stores and I have him searching for a few more things for me. All in all a good day. Cam, you did good. I was too lazy to get out of bed and get in line so I didn't get a few on my list. The Acid Test and Jaco are a couple I'm searching for. Hopefully my son finds them for me.

My Vinyl collection:

My "old school" stereo w/Yamaha mahogany base direct drive turntable:

As can be seen from the amount of accumulated dust, I haven't touched any of this shit in about a decade . . . most of that stereo doesn't even work anymore . . .

Oh, the vast majority of the vinyl is pre-1978 . . .

Jen, if they don't find 'em, try the Bull Moose site>> "Extra copies of RSD items will go on sale on www.bullmoose.com at 10am April 24. Our site will slow down because the entire internet will show up. For faster check out, log in between 9:45 and 9:55am."

Since they started RSD, Bull Moose usually gets a decent supply. I heard them telling customers that other stuff will actually be coming in for the next few days.

The Jaco was the only copy I saw, several more acid tests left at the store i was in.

The Cars - Live at the Agora 1978  <<<,

The Cure - Acoustic Hits  <<<

Nice ! Enjoy.

Just ordered a reissue of Getz/ Gilberto. Really looking forward to it.

Bob, clear off that dust!
Get an affordable Orbit turntable for your current setup.
Check out some of the newer quality vinyl.

I'm guessing your current setup has some juice, records would sound great :)

Picked up Jeff Beck - Truth, S+G - Bookends, and Van - St. Dom's. Record store guy threw in a Maria Muldaur for free!

Hey Bob, is that a Radio Shack switching box?

Surfdead, I'm curious - how does the Jeff Beck - Truth sound compared to the original issue? How do any of the ones that people are picking up?

Yes, the Harmon Karden integrated amp is 100 watts per channel, feeding a pair of Bose 601's.  And yes Radio Shack switch boxes feeding a pair of Nax BX300 tape decks.  The amp & the turntable have fritzed out & been fixed several times, & the belts on the tape decks are long petrified.  I gave up on this system 10 years ago or so, but yeah, in it's day, the vinyl did sound pretty good cranked thru it.  Much of my vinyl is pretty well used too.  Thus I'm not really concerned about baiting any potential burglars w/these pix, doubt it'd be worth their effort to crate this stuff away, in fact said burglars would be basically doing me a favor . . .

And yes I built all the shelving myself, custom, & very Disco Stu Ish . . .

This is what I got today.

Dear Mr. Sideshow --

While I'm not particularly fond of your Audio shelf Aesthetic, I'm sure it suits the desired function.

But please don't apply my Handle to that stuff as if that is my design style.

Please peek at the Tube Amp thread for a moment.

That's the audio stuff I keep; sturdy, functional, classic.

Your shelf style is relevant only to my patching the cellar Steps when it was snowing and I had not the time to measure, cut and plane new risers and treads.

I can help you out when it's time for new Raised Garden Beds.  My design expertise is influenced by Japanese and Norwegian craftspersons, with African Flair.

Bob, I see the exercise bike has some dust on it, too.

Tell us some of those stories....

:)

>>>>> how does the Jeff Beck - Truth sound compared to the original issue? How do any of the ones that people are picking up?

Haven't played it yet - that's for today. It's used and seems original, but in good shape.

Best surprise of the day turned out to be Mad Professor meets Jah9. Awesome deep dub with huge & heart-expanding bass. The one release I bought completely blind, also nice blue-splashed, clear vinyl.

The sound on most new vinyl releases seems to far surpass any of the lightweight, crappy old vinyl I was buying in the early 80's & beyond.
In some cases, the Record Store Day releases can be as much for novelty or symbolism as anything. In other cases, they are true sonic upgrades.

It's fun as fuck to buy & spin vinyl on a halfway decent system, though.

{{{ Everyone Worrying About Bobs Dust }}}  ha ha !

Went to one shop in the Chicago area- it was super crowded.  They had some cool items.  Can't really be traveling with a bunch of stuff and I already picked up a couple of records at the antique shops in the country.

Would like to grab the Leland Bluebird Sessions before I leave.

OG Artists:

"Tampa Red, Washboard Sam, Big Bill Broonzy, Walter Davis, John Lee “Sonny Boy” Williamson, Big Joe Williams, Henry Townsend, Robert Lee McCoy, Speckled Red, Merlene Johnson, Addie “Sweet Peas” Spivey, Bill “Jazz” Gillum and One Arm Slim, amongst many others, participated in many of the recordings sessions that took place every few months from May of 1937 to December of 1938."

Here's what we got- missed out on the Toto Africa and Waylon Jennings releases. Also, would like to get the Johnny Cash kids album too. Might look like a lot, but we're collectors and also listen to everything we buy no matter how rare it is. Flippers can f off! ;)

The Peter Tosh albums inner sleeve was a scratch-n-sniff. Pretty funny but honestly, it stinks. haha
