Rebuild / restore DeWalt 18V Batteries ?

Forums:

Anyone tried this at home ? I got a bunch of old ones that won't take / hold a charge and have bad individual cells.

Battery Warehouse type places will rebuild for 30-40 bucks @ but it seems like you could pull it off for about 5 bucks of new cells per battery pack, maybe some solder and tape ?

Curious if anyone tried as a DIY project and how it worked out.

I'd  spend the money.  Seems time consuming for a busy person.

No experience but Dewalt is a very fine product like a bic lighter.

Worth every penny.  Dependable.

By the way,  speaking of outer space shit,,,

Stu  just a suggestion, but in today's political climate, if you live in alone in cabin in the woods you may not want to be playing around with batteries, solder, little wires ....and especially those red road flares you have in the back of the pickup.

One night the pizza delivery guy spots all that stuff and the next night you get a knock at the door and then -- bingo -- before you know it, you are on a No Sell list at Ticketmaster.

Well I looked on eBane and here's what I learned --

New 18V XRP batteries (genuine DeWalt) fetch around 64 bucks;
Chinese imitations can be had for around 14-16 bucks;
Genuine deWalt dead batteries go for 2-7 dollars sold for 'parts only' .

So maybe I'll take a couple of the nice-looking ones for a rebuild, and sell the beaters to other hobbyists.

This guy got 25 bucks for a pair of Dead batteries + shipping.

This seller got 145 for 2 new ones, free shipping.

Finally, this industrious fellow shows how to repair the items with some tape and solder. However, his fancy charger costs more $$ than buying a new Chinese battery.

All that time fooling with the little cells and charging each one;  I'd rather take Hüsky for Walkies.
However, it can be done and he shows how.

Stu ,  do it. You have it figured out ,man

Imagine the the starter battery for this.

Trailhead --

Thanks,  I watched that video and that guy sure has a Kool spot-welder rig. Wonder what one of those costs ?

Stick them in the freezer

I needed a second 20 v lithium ion battery for Porter Cable. The name brand is over $60. I found a 2-pack of off-brand batteries, with higher ratings than the real ones, for $40.

Looks like you found the specific one, but have been following this guy's YouTube Channel for van solar intel and he delve's into diy battery construction in several of his episodes.  Might give more general background for you

Here's a recent one:

I looked at the one Trailhead posted and that guy seems to be replacing the stock NiCd 1.2 Volt cells with a lesser amount of higher voltage (maybe NiMH ?) cells. So he's hot-rodding / modernizing the battery pack,  and getting the benefits of less weight and longer cell lifespan.

After watching a few of these,  I'm tempted to try the trick of zapping individual 1.2 V cells for a second or two using old mower battery... outdoors where nothing can catch on fire.

These are usually two for one at Christmas, every year, at least my old Milwaukee's are.

maybe NiMH ?

It's a secret.

And...  this guy shows how to replace all 15 cells in a DeWalt 18V pack. He got the new cells in a Harbor Freight battery pack - $12.99.
40 minutes long but he shows how to do every step, and uses a common soldering iron instead of spot-welder.

But despite being a lengthy video,  it shows about how long the job takes.

Strolling Hüsky through Home Despot the other day, I checked the cordless battery shelf.

New Old Stock 18V DeWalt XRP batteries are about $100 each !
However, there's a blister-pak of (two) Lithium-Ion batteries and adaptor (plugs Li-Ion form-factor into your old 18V stuff) for maybe $104.00.

That's a good deal, but does not come with Li-Ion charger. Maybe you can charge the whole thing (adapter + Li-Ion batt) in the old-fashioned Ni-Cad charger.  I have no idea.

got a dewalt battery from ebay, but wasn't lithium, so returned it.  Old drill, replacement batts are spendy, so got a new dewalt hammer drill for $100.  Sure saves time vs. sending batteries back and fourth....

It's 40 bucks to rebuild the old 18V NiCd DeWalt at "Batteries Plus" but 35 each if you bring in a few. Not a terrible deal,  and they re-construct them properly and recycle the old cells.

Not too much $$ in savings if you do it yourself at home.  New "Sub-C" cells cost money, then the time.

Just buy a fuckin Milwaukee

I have some Milwaukee stuff -- but it's all corded.  I've got an industrial-grade Milwaukee angle grinder which will break your foot if you drop it. Quite heavy.

The cordless / battery stuff is good for projects where there is no electricity.
