real police reform

Any ideas?

..here's one:   seatbelt laws

They're bullshit.

How is it  that it's perfectly legal (In 19 states) to ride a motorcycle without a helmet but seatbelts are mandatory because they 'save lives'?

They do save lives of course but should it be mandatory?

What's more, in my opinion,  seatbelt laws can be used as a reason to pull you over and shake you down. Even if you have your belt on, it's your word against the cop. And guess what ? bad cops will lie about it using it as a reason to pull over black  drivers disproportionately.

Abolish seatbelt laws

Just sayin'

I also think  driving under the influence laws should be eased up. Maybe take a different approach with that as well ( especially with weed). I basically think the laws are too tight and lead to more pullovers..maybe  if you're all over the road that is one thing but it's just another way to shake you down

Oxygen thief.

If you want some serious ideas, here is a report from Human Rights Watch with some suggestions for policing reforms in the US:

waste of air

full of hot air, just hold your breath

I fully support Greg's refusal to wear a seat belt/helmet.

Everyone else should use a seat belt/helmet.

Interlock should be standard on every vehicle, especially any vehicle greg might be driving.

Double the penalty for anyone who commits a crime if they are employed by the Executive, Judicial, or Legislative branch of government.  These employees are at the core of what we believe is law and order.  Let's start there.

Educate all children equally

stop creating third world slums by hoarding the homeless to certain areas of the city

help the homeless

stop poverty in the US

more vacation time, and 3-4 day work weeks

living wage, I hope this idea is a success.

Bad idea.

EMTs and cops will have to spend more of their time scraping stupid people off the highway. Everyone's insurance premiums will go up. Cops can still do profiled pullovers just by saying you crossed the white line.

All vehicles should have seatbelt interlocks so they can't be started without the belt on.

Wrt DUI, how many folks get arrested for drunk driving when they're not impaired? Not many. I know quite a few folks who have been killed by drunk drivers.

They need to come up with a quick, saliva THC test and a reasonable limit for Driving While Stoned

The dire reality is that white people don't often get pulled over for nothing and shaken down. Here in Vermont, a black male is 7x more likely to get pulled over than a white male. Real police reform addresses the reason for that. It doesn't change laws that are necessary for safety.

The real Police could reform, but it's doubtful that Andy and Stewart feel like working on Sting's farm anymore.

Is it just me, or does it sound like g-reg got popped for a DUI because he wasn't wearing a seat belt?

Who doesn't want to wear a seatbelt?

Traffic stops should not be done by police. There should be another division enforcement with the same kind of authority of meter maids, and they wouldn't have guns. The only thing that should ever happen to you when you get pulled over is a ticket for whatever it was you were doing. The only time cops would be called in would be for suspicion of drunk driving.

>>>>The dire reality is that white people don't often get pulled over for nothing and shaken down

Back in the day, if you were a white dude with dreads and GD stickers on your car, you would get pulled over all the time for no reason.  Happened to me quite a few times.

With weed legal in so many places, do the police still pull over hippies at random?

>>Happened to me quite a few times.

Me too. I was pulled over a more than a few times for doing nothing, and had my car torn apart at least 3 times. I think that times are diferent now.

I used to drive all the way south and cut through New Mexico and Az just to avoid driving thru Utah

I used to be a cop magnet. My vehicle was plastered with GD stickers, my hair was long, and there was usually a joint burning, but now my car has no stickers and I'm bald.

Over 10 years ago while off the beaten path at a small diner in SE Utah a grip of militarized law enforcement agents roll in and sit down. It all sort of took the wind out of the place - for me at least - when I catch a glimpse of some sort of "anti-weed" patch (leaf with red cross circled through it) on their shirts/jackets. Uh-oh. I sorta hurried through my meal and skedaddled outta there. I get outside and see some dogs across a mix of marked, unmarked, and under-cover vehicles and later learned about some well-funded I-70 corridor state-operative "anti-smuggling force".  I had a small bit of weed packed away in the car that made me nervous until that place was well into my rear view mirror. UT troopers pull a lot of meth and heroin off the interstates (good riddance) but will not at all hesitate to bust people for any amount of grass as well, racking up automatic swift-motion DUI's as well. Roll On Safely, My Phriendz, there are still plenty of places that are clinging for dear life to the broken model of canna prohibition.

My observation, having worked hundreds if not thousands of trauma cases during my medical tenure, is when you don't wear a seatbelt, for certain kinds of crashes, you get ejected thru the windshield, where you either get decapitated, or have your face cut off (what i've mostly seen), not much they can do, creates quite a mess though, all those tiny arteries forming blood cottage cheese sculptures on the floor......   steel your face right off your head indeed!

it's like the wear a mask debate all over again, you can be arrogant and stupid, or you can try and help out your fellow humans, and have a sense of community, vs being a blood stain....

Don't be the blood stain!

I was clear, I thought,  to say seatbelts save lives. I fully encourage everyone to use one. I wear mine every time I drive or if I'm in the front seat as a passenger.

I also think helmets save lives.  I noticed that it wasn't mandated in my state to have to wear one.. It's up to the rider.  so seatbelt laws seem trivial in comparison.

Maybe it's something like if you're over 18 you have the choice to wear one or something.

I just don't think it should get you pulled over if you aren't wearing one.  I think law enforcement uses the seatbelt laws to pull over whomever they want without any real cause.

Plus I think if the cop smells weed on you or in the car during a pullover they should mind their own business. They shouldnt even bring it up. If it doesn't affect you adversely and you are driving just fine they should leave it alone. ..for e.g. pulled over for a taillight that's not working but you are driving perfectly,  but they smell some herb on you then you're busted for impaired driving.

..and it's exploited by bad cops to shake anyone down the feel like

Greg, have you researched west belt laws? In 15 states it's secondary enforcement, meaning that they can't pull you over solely for not wearing one. You don't have to get rid of laws that work.

If you buy a car that was made before seats belts were mandatory and has none then you don't have to wear one, legally. At least that's how it was here in Jerseyland.

I know that 99% of zoners a drive high but you do understand they are going to be even more strict about that now, right? In NJ I imagine cops are gonna be all over that shit. Not sure how they will test for it on spot but I'm sure they are working on that.

They're working on it, but it's not as simple as testing for blood alcohol. As most here probably know, THC stays in your system for quite some time.

I don't drive high. Honestly, I really don't want to be on the roads with people who are totally zonked on weed, and more than with people who are buzzed on alcohol. I might be in the minority with my POV on that, but whatever.
