The Real Dire Wolf Ran Into an Evolutionary Dead End

Forums:

The species’ remarkable genetic isolation from other wolves may have contributed to its demise.  So too could Weir taking over lead vocals post Garcia. https://nyti.ms/3i7RMDN

I posted a Dire Wolf thread the other day,  it's probably here somewhere.

Must have missed that-so many threads, so little time--great minds, right!

I bumped the other one which was a link to Sci-Fi American article.

Actually , the first live versions of Dire Wolf had weir singing lead with Jerry on pedal steel. They changed that pretty quick. I didn't know that until very recently when I threw on a 70' show and heard it. Was very strange.

^^Looks like the first 3 versions, June 7th, 11th & 14th 1969 had Garcia singing, no pedal steel listed.  Garcia supposedly felt uncomfortable singing & playing pedal steel, so Weir sang on June 20th, 21st, 27th & July 4th, last version listed with a steel guitar.

Fillmore East 6/21/69 version also features the only version of a George Jones song called Old, Old House  https://archive.org/details/gd69-06-21.early-late.aud-sbd.cotsman.16334....
