After the last few Q outings this doesn't get me that excited. I mean they're better quality players than Phil usually plays with but they will he just as under-rehearsed.
This is like that episode of the Sopranos where Tony's cousin Tony Blondetto, Feetch LaMotta and some of the New York crew all get out of the joint around the same time. Everyone thinks it's going to be a big great reunion, but Tony B AND Phil Leotardo both end up getting wacked in the end which goes to show, you don't ever know.
I'd rather see the Q over any of Phil's lineups, but yeah an unrehearsed Q is still...unrehearsed. I'm not down with the 'secret' lineup bullshit. Complete disrespect to the audience. Many don't see it that way but it's my take and I'm sticking to it.
I blame the whole cryin ryin fiasco for the 'Phil following his weird' nonsense.
I'm with Jonas on the whole 'secret lineup' thing. It is complete disrespect for the audience, most of us aren't 22 years old anymore. Kind of like getting blindfolded, then the hooker walks in the room. I know it'll be a good time, but I like to know what I'm getting.
Phil's lineups sell, at best, a handful of tickets. The draw is Phil Lesh, not who he is playing with. I don't think it shows any disrespect to the audience and since most of the shows are usually at or close too capacity, I think most of the audience agrees.
The above becomes even less of a concern at a festival where the cost of the ticket is "spread" out over a number of bands. While I am sure some go to LOCK'N only because of Mr. Lesh's inclusion, I would bet there is still a lot of value if you like the others performers on the bill.
>>>After the last few Q outings this doesn't get me that excited. I mean they're better quality players than Phil usually plays with but they will he just as under-rehearsed
Agreed. I was actually surprised how uninspiring that band felt to me watching their last few performances. Felt like a cover band-level performance with no sense of scale or importance whatsoever.
I haven't seen Phil in many years at this point (last show was a very mediocre Furthur performance @ Red Rocks) and I'm fine with that. I don't think I'll ever make the trek to TXR, but I do hope Phil's artistry prevails over his almost laughably obvious financial motivations before he calls it a career. I'd still like to believe he can conjure something greater than "just ok"
Been so long since I've seen them, I forgot that Pete S. handled the keyboards. Dunno if Mookie sat in when they did the DNB/Moonalice tourette back East.
I too have stopped PAYING to see Phil. Only because at my age I figure the thousand a weekend I would spend might just keep me alive another week when I am really old ( I am on SS now)................better things to do with my dollars at this point in time. Now couch tour is another beast altogether, we still like the music just not the prices. We stream all the Phil shows we can.......
>>> Phil's lineups sell, at best, a handful of tickets. The draw is Phil Lesh, not who he is playing with.
I'm not totally sure this is right. The Cap Q shows in March 2016 were the hardest tickets to get for any Phil Cap run that I can recall -- very fast sellouts. The Q retains some special X factor (both their reputation and their musical synergy) that I think makes for a somewhat bigger draw, even if those shows showed they are nowhere near what they were in 2001-2003.
Really, anything that gets Jimmy Herring and Phil together when I'm happy with.
>>even if those shows showed they are nowhere near what they were in 2001-2003
The Grateful Dead in 1984 were nowhere near what they were in 1969 or 1972 either. No big deal. The Dead still drew pretty well in 1984.
>>Really, anything that gets Jimmy Herring and Phil together when I'm happy with.
I agree 100 % - and even though they cannot ne (by not playing together frequently enough or even rehearsing) or won't be as good as they were in 2001 - 2003 - I can deal with that.
Not really. I am not a fan of WSP. The Best WSP show I saw was in 1990 or 1991 with Houser. I saw them open for the ABB once after that many years later when Houser was gone and Jimmy was in the band. I could not understand a damn word that John Bell mumbled all night - and I was in the 9th row center. Jimmy and Schools were excellent, but the whole show lacked what I needed. I have a bunch of friends who love them - but not everyone likes licorice. Lots of bands in this world, thankfully.

>>>>As long as JRAD is there, I don't care who Phil brings.
This is the type of happy positive attitude we need around here, JRAD will be good as usual and if it is the Q you will probably get a bonus solid show. Just might do one of the days. I remember driving by a few years ago and was tempted to stop, thunder storms around and when we drove farther down 29 i saw this roadkill black bear and wanted to stop and cut the claws off(denied).
Its called taxidermy, it was past expiration and stunk so it was out of the question. Understandably stomach turning for those not use to it. Surprised it was still there and not picked up for the pelt alone.
>>Seriously, why would you want a bear's claws?
First thing i didn't stop, so calm down everyone. To answer your question i would have gifted them away to an elder at the sun dance.
Maybe he cruised slowly by with the window open and his head hanging out, thus ascertaining the odoriferousness of said ursine without having to actually stop?
Both, it smelled bad when we drove by. The statements do not contradict.
Troll me all you want Timmy if thats what gets you off, have at it man. Truth be told i'm not shitshowing with you or anyone else here from now on. Please just leave me alone and i'll do the same with you.
If i had more time for the silly childish game and maybe if i was 16 it would be more appealing, bickering with the same people has gotten old, sorry guys. Its like a broken record of groundhog day around here, lol. We need some new people in here to spice this up.
We like driving that stretch of 29 going down to Burlington nc. If the Q is playing we would consider it.
You guys. You guys. You guys. You guys. You guys. You guys. You guys. You guys. You guys. You guys. You guys. You guys. You guys. You guys. You guys. You guys. You guys. You guys. You guys. You guys. You guys. You guys. You guys. You guys. You guys. You guys. You guys.
Bike repair is my new interest. Just picked up a free beach cruiser in need of repair, Paul Frank amphibious asphalt vehicle. Needs new pedals and a seat.
Fog, I saw a dead coyote the other day. I'd be happy to saw it's head off and send it to you so you don't go to the Sun Dance with no offerings for the elders.
"Weir tells Rolling Stone he's taking a very laissez faire approach to the performance. "I get to the festival and somebody slaps me on the shoulder and says, ‘You’re on,'" he says."
>>>>>>No Q? Good golly gosh! And after all the time peeps spent posting negativity about Phil and the current state of the Q, too. Seems like such a shame.
Well Phil listened to the squeaky wheels and decided two sets with a well rehearsed family band,
and with a bit of snark will play on Sunday for a bunch of moe.rons.
I agree that Lockaroo is a bit costly. The one year I went, felt like I got my money's worth. Aside from the bassackwards entrance policy, plenty good Bands and decent food / Beer concessions in the main venue and around the campgrounds.
Shower setup was lousy. That would be a gripe, maybe they've fixed that.
