To Private Jet or Not to Private Jet?

Forums:

That is the question?

In the spirit of calling out hypocrites and crooked ass motherfuckers from any and all political stances, I'm starting a thread regarding private jets. Apparently Prince Harry flies one, as do many liberal anti-global warming advocates. Which is pretty hypocritical. I mean, even if you offset the carbon, you're still producing it in the first place. And I'm pretty sure you can get in and out first class on a regular flight in a totally private manner, maybe. But really, fuck celebrities and their individualized justifications.

So Elton John spoke out in favor of the Prince, something about how the paparazzi has hounded his family forever so now, even though he is a highly vocal anti-global warming advocate, we have to give HIM a pass because he's too special and journalists bother him. Then Ellen DeGeneres defended him, too.

Isn't all just a little bit hypocritical? Who else gets a pass? How much environmental work do you have to do before your calculations give you the result of "I deserve a private jet"?

Anybody else wonder?

>>>>Who else gets a pass?

Led Zep Jet.jpg

def for led zeppelin only

own or rent it's still private

The Stones should fly coach.

Forget about jets, what about cars?

How many animals have each of us killed by virtue of either driving or riding in a motor vehicle?  I know I've killed at least 2-3 deer, 1 racoon and another animal about the same size, dozens of rodents and birds, and likely BILLIONS of insects.

We are 2 or 3 logical steps away from exterminating humans.

Guess what I was trying to say is that I "wonder" about the necessity of traveling faster than our "natural speed" as human beings?

If you want to start on people....

How about first class...all that space seems wasteful?

how about Monster Trucks?

How about people who travel around the world just for fun?

What about air conditioning?

What about eating blueberries flown to the US from Chile in the winter?

What about coal factories

Fiji Water.

C'mon man.

how about Monster Trucks?<<<

What about million dollar RV's and Houseboats?

For that matter, what about any vehicle that uses "excessive" energy?

If we're serious about our use of energy as it relates to both the environment and national security, why would there NOT be a regulatory system for rationing a baseline allowance for individual energy consumption; likewise, a provision that imposes a progressive tax (that escalates sharply) for excess usage?

^ your daily quota is used up by typing that out.

My wife's uncle flew one, the Boston celtics were regulars. He used to play cards with Jo Jo White. He flew the GD once, said they smoked a lot of pot.

>> What about million dollar RV's and Houseboats? <<

What does the price have to do with anything? What about shitty old RVs and boats built in the 70s? Are they OK because poor people own them?

You definitely have a point in so far as possibly alluding to the amount of fuel being consumed as being the bottom line; however, is there not generally an increased carbon footprint associated with the purchase a new item vs. that of an older used version?  Likewise, does not said purchase of a new item signal a demand that stimulates greater production?  Do you feel the State of Colorado is not justified in charging you more to register that new 2020 BMW vs. an older 2005 Subaru?

Also not suggesting there aren't exceptions to the "rule" in terms of how what are commonly viewed as ammenities might be used for more practical purposes and actually conserve energy.

I've given up flying altogether. Wife and I only have one car between us - a 5 year old Subaru. We only spend $200/month on gasoline and elec. power combined (a little more elec. in the winter). We have a small house and grow some of our own food.

It's a property tax based on value, not on age or utility.

Keep your eye on the ball, FOM, and don't let valid points get undermined by your zeal for class warfare.

deadheads are one to talk....

meanwhile gassing up the '78  van that gets 5 mpg

or jumping on a plane for mayer and co...

I had a 21' travel trailer for several years that I would take to festivals.  I towed it with an eight cylinder Jeep Grand Cherokee.  When I was towing it on the flats, it got 12 mpg.   Uphill was much worse.   Pain in the ass to haul around, but so nice when you got to the festival and all set up.

Biggest mistake was getting it new.  Things on it started to break as soon as I towed it off the lot.   It also had an awful formaldehyde fume problem for the first year from all the glue and fake wood.   Should have bought a used one for a fraction of the price.

Wow. I forgot I started this thread.

Lots of good points.

First, I think we can all agree that Led Zeppelin gets a pass. Stones and Doobies...meh.

The list of "what about's" is good and valid. Everything we do and consume has an environmental footprint and yes, the environmental footprint of first class is high, no doubt, but it's still a hell of a lot lower than flying two passengers on one jet. The particular hypocrisy here is not just about whether you have a high carbon footprint or not, it has to do with being a highly-recognized and vocal advocate for preventing climate change and then flying around on a private jet.

Anyways. I'm glad we all agree on Zeppelin. We do, right?

>> I'm glad we all agree on Zeppelin. We do, right? <<

FOM thinks they should walk and carry their amps.

wait, why can't the stones have a plane?

I'm just not a Stones fan. Sorry.

I'm more concerned about Axl Rose's methane gas emissions

The Dead had their own plane for a little while.  Never did see a picture of it.

Does Ed Force One get a pass?

^ yes, as long they are claiming the "flight of icarus" exemption.

>>Stones should fly coach

Maiden gets a pass, for sure.

Nobody gets a pass.

Yeah, I know, I'm just being facetious. But it's pretty entertaining to see that no one (I think no one) in this thread actually condemned the use of the private jet by Prince Harry. Is it that what he did isn't a big deal? Or is it liberal bias giving a free pass to somebody based on rationalizations? I don't know but I think it's important to stay critical of all people in power and not lose track of that during these crazy and mixed up times.

^ nobody endorsed him either, Javs.

Full disclosure: I flew private back from the Dominican in January. It was awesome. They even had snacks.

Ha!  But they were on an old turbo prop Convair CV-240 with a coked up pilot when it ran out of fuel and crashed into the swamp.  I don't know if jets have a bigger carbon footprint,  RIP Ronnie, Steve, and Cassie.

I completely agree with you, Javs. Check out these other hypocrites as well:

Intersisting post EB Fox.  Thanks for sharing.

Elon Musk rides around in a Model T Ford?

Harrison Ford has a nice collection of airplanes.  And some of them get relatively good gas millage.

While not on the list, Jimmy Buffet travels around in old flying boats that he pilots himself (sometimes). Not sure what mpg those things get, but its pretty cool nonetheless.  Does he get a pass?

On a relatively topical note, my son was just watching this Wendover Productions video about the NFL useage of planes:

Well, since I already killed this thread, I may as well add one more video, specifically about the costs (and benefits) of private air travel (carbon footprint numbers are presented about 8 minutes in, if I remember correctly).

Interesting to see who owns the largest private jet fleet...

Yachts can be emissions free. Get a yacht.

All air travel contributes 2% of the problem if you want to hate private jets go for it but we could ground every plane and it wouldn't make a difference

Around the world, aviation emits about 860 million metric tons of carbon dioxide every year, or about 2 percent of total global greenhouse gas emissions.

That Doobie Brothers plane ended up as part of the Caribbean Zone restaurant under the 80 freeway. At least I assume that's the same plane.

My work had a Christmas party there because our building was next door.

Jet powered hang glider video. It would make the cut.

Good conversation in here - I didn't realize this thread was still alive. Some thinking to do and I'll post later. :)

Animal agriculture is responsible for 13–18% of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions globally.

Air travel contributes 2%.

So obviously vegetarians flying on private jets should get a pass, right?
