I always wondered who came up with that phrase, figuring that Fred Schneider and the B-52s had picked it up from some hipsters in Athens, Georgia. Turns out that they seem to get credit for coining the term.
From Wikipedia:
The B-52's are from Athens, Georgia, and never played a concert in Idaho until September 13, 2011, when they played at Eagle River Pavilion in Eagle, Idaho. In preparation of the event, the Idaho Statesman interviewed Fred Schneider about the song's meaning. "Idaho is pretty mysterious to all of us," he said. "I know it's a beautiful state, but then I know there's also a lot of crazy right-wingers and all that stuff. ...The song's about all different things. It's not like a parody of Idaho or anything."[2]
Since my only time east of the Rocky Mtn states was in the Newark airport in 1978 I have no idea about New Jersey except stereotypes. I've driven across Idaho on a couple of different routes and there is true natural beauty there. I hear there's natural beauty in New Jersey, but I can testify it wasn't at the Newark airport.
