Portable hot tubs -- anyone have one?

Forums:

I don't want to spend the money for a real hot tub, but am contemplating getting one of those inflatable hot tubs to soak in during the winter.  Coleman makes one. It looks like the whole set up would cost under $1,000.

(Keyboard muscles get sore after a 15 hr day and  need to spend my voter poll money---- joking)

Supposedly, they can get up to 104 degrees -- but the cheaper models shoot air (there is no pump for a real water jet). And the air bubble cool things down quickly.

Anyone own or try one of these. Toys? Waste of money? Or a cheap way to soak?

I feel like paying more than $100 for an inflatable anything it’s a bad idea.

>I feel like paying more than $100 for an inflatable anything it’s a bad idea.<

Ha, that's probably right. They make foam sided ones, too.

But can all those Amazon reviews be fake?

Still up in your dome?

>>Anyone own or try one of these. Toys? Waste of money? Or a cheap way to soak?

Pretty sure you know the answer.  Lol, don't let the $280 burn a hole in your pocket!

We rented one for the 1990 Cap Center run from a place called Hot Tubs to Go,  it was great.

<Still up in your dome?>

4Winds... what the fuck.... why are you so mean and confrontational? Why are you even posting in this thread? And why would you disparage or even comment about my finances? What's going on with you?  I notice that you always need an enemy. Is morning trolling your cup of tea? Is it fun for you?

I don't own a dome. I live in a house. I used to want to build a Buckminster Fuller type dome house way back when I lived on a rural piece of property and read Whole Earth catalog. But never did. I researched them and they leak. (Jeeeessus, you got me talking like Stu -- no offense Stu).

My house is in the suburbs by the woods and the back yard is inaccessible from the street, so a real hot tub is out -- you can't get a forklift back there. I've researched these portable alternatives online and want to get some advice from someone who might own one.

What does this have to do with you? Must you pollute another thread? Go start your own.

Sad I have to point this out:

Not going to go over the insults.

>>I don't own a dome.

Thank goodness.  My apologies Alan.  I'm going to move on even if you persist with provocative statements.

they had some hot tubs on display at a local street fair that looked like this one, but made from recycled materials, and a 2 person compact model, about the same price - maybe less.

Wonder how much a rental crane would cost to get a permanent one back there...  I've seen them do that with trailers at the coast (lift over a house for a prime ocean view)

Hoover, that's a great idea (I'm a Lowes guy rather than a Home Depot guy), but unfortunately we don't have the space for that in our 1960 rancher. They built smaller houses around here back then, with rather small master baths. In a more modern house, I would put one in.

We do have a screened in area under our deck that has electricity and is near a hose -- so I'm always thinking...wouldn't it be great to have a hot tub back here to soak in after a day of chopping rocks? It would be more a "rock shop / art studio accessory than a romantic enclave.

I just read a great hack about hooking a propane powered instant hot water heater to an inflatable so it would work in colder weather -- but that gets me into building something, which I'm trying to avoid.

I'm skeptical as hell about these portable tubs, but I keep reading these great reviews which have me wondering. The pros and cons are rather obvious, but maybe a Zoner has one, or has used one. (Thanks, Thom.) Never hurts to ask.

M Softub Pump, 2011 model, 106 degrees, quiet insulation, refurbished - $875 (san rafael)

Runs on 110v

Thank you Nancy. My wife would like something like that (especially recycled), but I think it would require machinery to get it into my backyard and that's not possible....neighbor's fence on one side and woods on another, plus a hill. So I'm looking for an easy to set up alternative. And instant gratification.

And LongLive.. that's the one I have tried many years ago. It actually wasn't too bad. You could definitely sit on a side without it collapsing.

Re pic... I'm no dummy....I'd build one with cuphoders.

There are in fact -- wood fired hot tubs. Not practical for me. But I could keep Stu in biz all winter!

This will buy you the portable hot tub you've been dreaming of!!!!!

look into the weight of the two person tub. can't find the link to the company that was displaying them locally, but I'm pretty sure it's doable - they were meant for tight spaces that are difficult to access.

At this point a slip 'n slide is more realistic.

I have friends with a snorkel hot tub stove system. Super awesome, let me know if you want more info or pictures.

Why would you need a forklift? We moved a big wooden tub with 6 people.

I check the local 'Craigslist'  for free stuff every so often.  There are always,  always free hot-tubs  with a broken pump.  Judging from your sculpture work,  you seem to be adept at working with tools.

So for the price of a new pump,  you could have an old-fashioned heavy Hot-Tub.

Of course you would have to remove a section of fence and replace it.

This one comes with an elephant - maybe it could help you move it?

Thanks guys/gals for the advice... and you know I love the pictures. I'm shopping for more of a "plug and play" sort of thing, not so much a permanent home improvement. I'm definitely on the toy end of the spectrum. But would drop a grand for a well built toy.

China Rider - thanks for the offer, much appreciated but ruled that out due to where it would be situated (next to  a cedar-shingled house under an old wooden deck) and the fire /smoke factor.

Brian K -  Thanks. But you are assuming I have 6 friends around here whose wives will let them lift heavy objects. I don't think I do. And all the "kids"' I know are in college now, so that leaves rounding up some guys outside Home Depot, which is possible... but

Actually, besides the fact that the backyard is somewhat inaccessible --another physical obstacle is that I want to put it under my screened in deck (bugfree) and I have about 4 feet of space between the support beams and there is no way my wife is going to let me chop down a pole holding up our deck. If I thought I was going to live here a long time I'd do it right --so now I'm looking for a half-assed, "temporary" quick and easy solution. Hence the  smaller, lighter, portable aspect.

Surf  / Long Live -- the Softtub is the preferred solution, but wow... pricey new... I think I'll look for a used one in good shape. Maybe I can save some dough if I don't get the elephant

Just the monthly food bill would be a killer.

This is a little too quick and easy, but believe me, I've contemplated it (with a hippy solar version, of course):

Knot -- Thanks for chiming in.. you might be the best person to ask if you really are in the pool biz.....I'm not too proud to say that might be the best option... it has like 1500 good reviews on Amazon and hell, I could by one a month for the price of a SoftTub. Thanks. What do you think about chlorine vs bromine? Or no chemicals? Cause I could just drain it into the yard and refill regularly.

Hoover - good morning.... thanks... we do have hopes of moving back to CA, so all this might be unnecessary... but I have to make it through this winter first

Bromine tabs.

Alan, that pool makes a great endzone for a nerf football game

Ask Whitaker, the new interim AG. He seems to have some history with hot tubs

The wife convinced me to buy one of those soft sided ones. One thing I quickly learned was that the ones with straight walls are not comfortable. The tub was on a concrete slab and the walls went up at 90 degrees. I would sit cross legged, but who want's that? It might work if you dropped a beach chair in there to sit in.

After a couple drain, scrub, refill cycles with no soaking in between, I sold it on Craigslist at a slight loss.
