The Pogues

Forums:

I had the fortune to see Shane MacGowan perform at a small club in Dublin called the Mean Fiddler in 1997. Shane wasn't in a great place then, and he was actually working with a band called The Popes, which was kinda sad for obvious reasons.

I will say the band was very, very good, and they did most of the heavy lifting throughout the performance. Still, standing in the same room with Shane was really special, and through the haze, he had moments of real power and clarity that demonstrated his genius as a performer. I'll always cherish that show.

Here's a classic with Shane at his peak with the Pogues:

That's awesome.

If you thought 1997 was sad, I saw Shane open for the pop group Girls Aloud in the Belfast city center in 2004. A small riot broke out but all in all, no one got killed bad

I would not be at all surprised if there is a new album and tour in 2018. The tour depends on Shane regaining a bit more mobility from him shattering his hip.

p.s. My friend Finny of The Mahones wrote a song about him and Shane and a lost night of drinking; A Great Night On The Lash

Damn, I love the Pogues, but I'd say that Them are better and Stiff Little Fingers are right there.

I like your optimism and very much hope that comes to pass, Tony; but my lord, Shane is not looking well these days.

Them r pretty legendary.

i'd also like to take this thread as an opportunity to mention I prefer the waterboys over flogging Molly

I've been meaning to check out more of The Pogues. Today seems like perfect opportunity. Slainte.

It's been said so many times by so many people; but Shane MacGowan is without question one of the greatest songwriters of all time.

Tom waits has gone on record as stating that 'rum, sodomy & the lash' is one of his favorite albums of all time.

Mahoney means "my ass"?

Bouncing around YouTube streaming The Pogues and I came across Roger Daltrey with The Chieftains. This version of Behind Blue Eyes breaks into an eerily familiar sounding jam at about the 2:35 mark... check it out.

Thin Lizzy were another outstanding Irish group, as were the bands of guitar hero Rory Gallagher.

Not sure where this is from, but here's a pro shot live A Pair of Brown Eyes that's pretty great:

Shane hasn't looked healthy in decades. Lesser men would have passed on a long time ago if they had Shane MacGowan's predilections...an Irish strain of Keith Richard's Syndrome.

No, I mean not looking well even for Shane MacGowan.

I would never count him out. God bless that man.
