Fantastic show!!!
Fantastic show!!!
I went to TXR for the free bar show, then ended up emptying my wallet for a discount extra ticket.
Even though I missed St. Stephen - China Cat Sunflower (had to drive people back to Oakland, then return to TXR), I have to say that this has been THE show of the year so far! (OK, this is only my 5th show of 2018, but still...)
Phil encouraged dense layering of swirling solos, with some great deconstruction at times. Scott Metzger's guitar was high in the mix, which was not a bad thing (though I was happy when Sless seemed to be turned up as the show progressed). 3 very capable axe handlers (Chris Gelbuda was a very pleasant surprise on guitar solos, as well as vocals). Karl D was absolutely fantastic and is a real spark plug (Scott had some great interplay with him at times, too). Everybody on stage was having a real good time and I have absolutely no complaints about any member of this great lineup.
So glad to be able to enjoy last night's show and am really looking forward to tonight's. Perhaps the Dark Star will "eclipse" everything that was played during the first gig.
The Good Stuff, for those who are into this sort of thing.
PS: the Bar lineup was great, as well. Glad to be able to see Stu and Johnny Mojo dueling it out for Sultans of Swing, among other fun classic covers.
GTTS!

BTW: I really liked Karl's
BTW: I really liked Karl's vocals on Shakedown Street. Bringing a little bit of soul to the mix.

Thanks for the review Johnny.
Thanks for the review Johnny. Any recordings pop up? That second set looks pretty nice. It'd be great to hear a second set like that with just Sless and Metzger and Karl D in the mix.
Hopefully one of these days Phil does Sless justice and spotlights him in one of these lineups. No need for three guitars, no need for Barry to be reserved and polite. Let Barry take the reigns and blast off.

I’ve never heard of Chris
I’ve never heard of Chris Gelbuda before so I looked him up and found this out about him: “Chris was the writer and vocalist on the German dance #1 hit "Bad Ideas" by Alle Farben, which went platinum.”
