Always one of my favorite Dead tunes for the last 50 years- never seem to get tired of it.
On this date in 1974 they cranked out one of the weirdest versions ever. Once described in an old copy of Deadbase as turning a warm afternoon concert into a prehistoric landscape of "Condor Jag"- not sure where that came from but it does seem to fit. Check it out here on the archive link - the shit hits the fan around the 15 minute mark I think.
I was there that day of course- up close. Very hot day at the Coliseum. Huge crowd -lots of friends - 4 great bands.
Any other versions of PITB out there that come to mind that were mind blowers? Chime in.

Yes Klondike, that Playin
Yes Klondike, that Playin>Wharf Rat>Playin Eyes is quite sick. Good for you for being there, it must have been quite a day.
I've always loved it.
Must mention the 45 minute Playin from Seattle in '74. Insane.

Ok, I will preface this by saying an 83 PITB is not in the same league as a 74 version, but for weirdness I like the City Island 6-22-83 version. Starts out fairly normal if not a little fast, somewhat the norm for the time. By 5 minutes in Jerry is cookin' and by 10 minutes in they achieve liftoff. Sounds like dinosaurs roaming around while alien spacecraft are landing. Blew my mind at the time! Doesnt seem to be a soundboard available.

Review from Reddit....4/22/77, a slept on show
Why in God's name do I not see this show talked about in the Spring 77 conversation? It has absolute back to back highlights. The Playin is pure 73 sounding with hints of a weird reggae sound mixed with pure funk spaciness. It's got probably the best Reprise I've ever heard too, it sounds like a reverse tango jam (from 9/28/76). It's 20 damn minutes long and never wastes a second. That is UNHEARD OF for Spring 77 at least with PITB post hiatus.

Nor is an 88 of all things, but the Playin' from Laguna Seca on 07/29/1988 (included in the So Many Roads box set) is a pretty crazy short trip. They go deep quick and find some truly scary dissonant wormholes to thrash around in before reemerging into silky sonic sweetness. Breathtaking stuff.
