Pittsburgh>Cincinnati>Louisville 89 minitour

Forums:

Came home to the east coast after New Year's 88-89 "Way High" spiritually.By far the most in tune I've ever been. It was mostly down hill from there until Spring Tour.

Pittsburgh PA April 2-3. Woosers!! Two very fine shows.

Camping and vending were in full force but it was quite evident that more people than tickets had shown up and the whole scene was truly out of hand.

I personally didn't see any of the violence but apparently the gates were crashed. Thus unleashing all the extra police the city called to duty.

Overzealous cops added with arrogant northeast deadheads without tickets made for a nationally televised news event. My friend saw it in the news in Miami!

Again I didn't see any of this,I had miracles, the only evidence was after the show cops were everywhere looking for blood.

I had made plans to hop in Jon and Steph's car after the shows and continue on to Ann Arbor. At the last minute I was denied.   Jon got uptight and said there was no room in the car. I wouldn't have minded but when we got to Cincy he had riders. Go figure..

The Fatty Zone in Cincinnati! During intermission the fattys flew. The zone was situated at the rear of the arena all the way up and we had a good showing that night. Halfway through intermission the police started collecting below us looking up at us. Panic set in. The cops walked all the way up and stopped 2 rows in front of our group to bust a guy with an empty beer bottle. Threw him out of the show. Go figure...

An excellent show. Cincy seems to be owned by Pete Rose. He's everywhere. Kerri and I saw a Warhol exhibit downtown before the show. Spent the night in Covington KY. Went through my first drive through liquor store. Iron City Beer!

Louisville was really cool but Freedom Hall was like a prison. We drove home after the show and made great time. As the sun rose while driving east Kerri and I saw a cloud cover the sun forming the perfect profile of a skull. She hadn't partaken at all over the trip but her sober eyes agreed we were seeing what we were seeing.

^^^^^Found the above an in old journal recently. Probably written in the summer of 89

The names have been changed to protect the innocent

Most drug references have been removed

Funny I barely wrote about the music.

Whistle through your teeth and spit

cause it's alright

I did both Pitts and Louisville. Cincy was the only show I was ever shut out of.

Spring '89 tour itinerary was part of someone's misguided decision to avoid venues in the northeast to build up demand for the stadium summer extravaganza. Not sure how that rationale got by so many gate keepers.

From a business standpoint and based on tickets sold, I would say it worked out fairly well. Demand was always high on the east coast anyway and how could they not play massive venues that Summer? (original statement/quote placed below for better ease of reading and spacing)

>Spring '89 tour itinerary was part of someone's misguided decision to avoid venues in the northeast to build up demand for the stadium summer extravaganza. Not sure how that rationale got by so many gate keepers.<

Strawbud that's exactly what I'm saying. The demand for '89 summer tour was going to be there anyway. Skipping markets to build up demand is something that pertained to more traditional artists, not the GD.

Avoiding the northeast in the spring didn't accomplish anything other than forcing too many people to travel to Pittsburg and Cincy, amongst others.

OK, I apologize for missing your main point(s). Things were really starting to boil over at that time as it was, hence the stealthy Warlocks @ Hampton move, etc. As cool as that was or may have been for those in attendance, the band was certainly feeling the pinch and heat from over-blown Shakedown scenes and many ticketless folks (too many by choice) outside of their shows too. I saw '89 as a relatively stellar music and energy year for the band, with '90 kicking the music up even more, at least until Brent punched out his card.

I did Cincy/ Louisville with a friend.

Riverfront was  great - very good show and crowd. A little intense in the lot- first time I caught a show in that part of the country.

Caught the first half of the Giants/ Reds game next day- then we had to boogaloo down to Louisville.

Fairly stale show there  IMO.  The place had heavy slightly redneck security which didn't help.

My only shows on this tour.  Hustled back to the Red Roof in Monroeville to catch the last couple minutes of the Final Four.  Won by Michigan & Ann Arbor was the next stop on the tour, first the students trashed the place, then the Heads took over the town.

A fan's take on the reason for the cops in Pittsburgh from Setlists.net....

My take of "gate crash" was involved . About 75 of us were dancing outside a bunch of doors could here music really well . A panicked tripper came running from inside the arena trying to get out when he saw security at door he did a baseball slide and kicked the bottom widow out and ran out of the arena. When security diverted attention to the window and tripper someone dancing inside opened a door . It was like a vacuum hundreds of people all of sudden pushing for one door one second I was on the sidewalk the next I was standing in the concourse. I looked around no one was chasing me walked in grabbed a behind the stage seat and rocked out to an awesome show .

...ah, the ole 'swept in through the out door'

I loved that Cinci show for a long time.   Thought it was one of the better Dear Mr F Judes.

>>>Fairly stale show there  IMO

Louisville is probably accurate.  There was a good Other One and the final "Louis Louis Louisville Louisville Oooooooh".  It wasn't bad, it just doesn't really go anywhere.

What a super fun Spring tour and incredibly fond memories this topic brings back!
Yep, the Pittsburgh shows were and are known as the riot shows. We saw it all go down. It was super agro and very frightening. Cops went berserk, as is so typical with so many Pigs, damn Pigs!!
Alas, the shows were good. From there came the absolute highlight which was Ann Arbor! Solid shows, nothing mind-blowing but vibe central!! The UoM civic center was cut in half  inside, so were tiny shows, not sold out, could walk up to the box office before the show and say "Two Please"!!!  Not to mention, they let you camp in the parking lot and the annual NORMAL gathering had just ended in town so kinde bud was everywhere! Ann Arbor was the outlier and the scene and shows were extremely special!  From there Cinci, which was kinda generic after Ann Arbor but good. Louisville was great way to end the little tour. Even the it was just an ok version, the Louie Louie 2nd set opener took the vibe in the show right up the very high levels with Brent shining bright!!
Ahhhhh memories of driving around the midwest with a great friend and a station wagon with three 100-lb. tanks in it! Ha!
