Hard to believe my first Phish show was 25 years ago in Eugene (Hilton Ballroom), that was an epic show. They pulled out all the stops since it was earth day, explaining the Phish "language", doing a nice Harpua, an all around great show. The band hung out at the bar during set breaks chatting it up w/ everyone. Got to take bong rips with Fishman after the show the following year at an after party, good times. (and really nice folks!). So without further ado;
PHISH, WEDNESDAY 04/22/1992
HILTON BALLROOM
Eugene , OR
Soundcheck: The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Ya Mar, Have Mercy
SET 1: Llama, Foam, Reba, Sparkle, Guelah Papyrus, Divided Sky, Mound, Stash, All Things Reconsidered, Suzy Greenberg
SET 2: Glide > Run Like an Antelope, The Horse > Silent in the Morning > Rift, Wilson[1] > Secret Language Instructions[2] > Wilson > Secret Language Instructions[3] > Wilson, You Enjoy Myself[4], Poor Heart > Cold as Ice > Cracklin' Rosie > Cold as Ice, Harpua > Runaway Jim
ENCORE: Take the 'A' Train, Rocky Top
[1] Fish on trombone.
[2] Simpsons, All Fall Down, and Turn Turn Turn signals introduced. Fish on trombone.
[3] Random Note signal introduced.
[4] Simpsons signal.
This gig was part of the University of Oregon’s annual Earth Week celebration; to celebrate, inflatable globes were thrown around the audience. Antelope included Stash teases from Trey. Fish played trombone on Wilson prior to and during the Secret Language Instructions. The Simpsons, All Fall Down, Turn Turn Turn, and Random Note signals were introduced during the Instructions, with the Random Note signal separately explained before the end of Wilson. YEM included a Simpsons signal and the vocal jam included a Sneakin' Sally through the Alley quote.
Agreed, Noodler, first three and half now, and they not only sound great, have yet another new lighting rig, but, theyre going deep into repetoire. Also, a whole bunch of new phish, never before covered trey tunes, and new covers in general....are they hinting that theyre gonna do a bakers dozen w no repeats????
I'm trying, once again, for like the millionth time. Set was OK, recognized Free & Runaway Jim. Too song-y not jammy enuff. Trey's tone is a little less annoying post-GD50. Mike's Metrosexual look more than makes up for it in the overall Annoyance quotient tho.
I may go to 1 or 2 of the weekday MSG shoes & try to get in free for shits & giggles (I'm on a streak, gotten into 4 shows in a row free or very cheap, all non-jamband). Tix bastrd still has good 100 levels on sale, lots of extras around for weekend shows too. Maybe that's the reason for the free webcast, drum up some interest. Well Peach Fest & Lockn aren't selling well either (from what I gather). Guess the jamband thing has finally jumped the shark/nuked the fridge. Everyone's into Hipster bands now . . .
SS, go back and listen to sundays second set if ya can, (lot if up on you tube, but, not sure if whole set 2 is yet), to get a hint of what nyc has in store.
OK thanx Mr Jambone I will, next few days. I hear their sound system is top notch, so am interested for that reason alone. I will say as great as I thought the 4 Panic shows I saw last Sept were, their sound totally SUCKED DONKEY BALLS, all muddy midrange & distortion, that's completely inexcusable in this day & age, technology has advanced a lot since the 1990's, when pretty much most bands sounded like shit aside from the GD & maybe Floyd-Waters/Yes/Dire Straits (& a select few others I can't think of @ the moment)
If you don't like jamming what are you doing listening to a jamband lol. One of the biggest downsides of the GD's popularity is that they brought on the most new followers in the mid '80's when they hardly jammed @ all. Then those fans all would be genuinely pissed when they did a show like 3/29/90 Dark Star w/Branford.
Yeah they don't seem to have any Edge like they did in the '90's. They kinda remind me of the pace of early Ratdog now. Guess Rugs'll do that (or the quitting thereof).
Or the phestival....all four of these shows (minus sundays second set) imo..have been rehearsals for nyc....anybody who thinks this is kinder, gentler, phish than any other stage (fuck that phish 1,2,3 bullshit)...just hasnt seen a show since 90 s...or listened to a string...
But, like everything....to each his own trampoline....
I saw them in 80s,90s, skipped 2002 say-2010, then back on board ever since...some of the best i ever saw were three years ago and up
Really hoping to get out to Asbury Park for the free 'RAQ' show as part of the 'Jams On the Sand' series. That would be Thursday evening at Convention Hall.
As everyone knows, they are an Essex Junction VT - based group, and Mr. Trey produced some of their earlier albums.
I actually listened to a few live tracks from the last couple years, and they sound like sort-of Mid 1990's Phish, but different.
Fascinated to Hear what they sound like on the Beach.
Fast forward to 1:12:00 or so, during encore break, the crowd goes BEZERK, like St Stephen @ MSG in '83 or the Hampton Warlocks Dark Star in '89, I ask the people around me "who is this guy?" "IT'S THE DUDE OF LIFE, MANNNNNNN!!!!!" all jumping up & down. They launch into Suzy Greenberg, I was probably vaguely familiar with it by then, but @ that moment sounded like a really really REALLY BAD Sugar Magnolia - everyone else was going crazy insane, I was like "This is the WORST Thing I've Ever Heard In My Life"
ps - Dude of Life is their friend who co-wrote a few early songs. I think he's still a high school history or math teacher in VT. A real Phishhead can fill you in.
I was amused to even find that video - I had always thought that happened in Worcester in 95 or Boston in 96 @ one of the New Year's runs - that's what Rugs will make you do. The rest of that show is pretty good (for them @ least) - jammy & decent song selections.
He is opposed to my spelling of "bandwitch" or some shit.
Go ahead and tell your etymology of "Bankwivv" please.
Everyone will be fascinated by the tale.
Keep in mind that I was a University student loooonnngg before your parents figured out how to sneak out of their parents' houses after 'curfew', young mr. Ateix.
My guess is that you are a 1995 baby, give or take a year.
Steve Pollack, SS, also co wrote fluffhead, slave to traffic light etc...has his own band, and yes, still teaching...elementary school kids, i blv...;)
I thought that the Poster Artiste Pollock was not involved with Lyrics, just graphic Art. So this is news to me.
But Tom Marshall has co-written lots of Phish Lyrics. That is somewhat verifiable.
I was unaware that he was a Teacher, but I can't keep up with everything. My former belief was that TM worked at a Corporate job. I did not know that he was also teaching School.
Thanks for the new Info. I'll ask about that when I chat with some of their former classmates & pals from back when. For example, my buddy from Chicago knows the fellow from Colorado who(m) painted houses w/ Tom Marshall back in the early 1980's. I will try and ask them this weekend, if I remember.
It's tough to keep track of everything and make the train on Time. But I'll be at first two nites of MSG this weekend, and the meeting spot pre-show is GingerMan or Rose's by LIRR area. If you're heading toward those shows, it would be fun to get together pre-show or late-nite.
DS...marshall is treys "hunter", and helped cowrite Gamehenge, and still writes w Trey to this day...Pollack is "the dude" and only co wrote w them early on...
He is also known for his weird antics incl throwing all kinds of crap on stage during shows..again, all in the early years...phish has backed him up on an album of his (i think he s attempted recording 2-3), and even were his "band" at shows many many many moons ago...so, basically two differant ppl ..marshall and pollack, w tom marshall much more involved over the years including production etc...and its pollack who is a teacher...marshall is not, that a know of
I think that you are Correct, and that I was mixing up "Steve Pollak" aka "Dude of Life" w/ the poster artist Jim Pollock or similar.
Somewhere I do have a legit Pressing of 'Crimes Of The Mind' which features 'She's Bitching Again' and the other Classics. That one never really got the airplay deserved, liek the first 'Boston' or 'Journey' album.
You being in the New England area, have a better idea about earlier Phish history and such.
How would I really know anything about all that stuff; it happened really faster enough than I could keep track. However, I did catch Vintage Phish performances like Vegas 1996 (Elvis nite) and Brussels 1997. Some various MSG shows, one Sandstone, a few Gorge shows and one Hult at Eugene.
Some of the multi-evening Festivals, London, Amsterdam, Köln, Big Cypress, Vegas when moe. played aftershoes, the Spectrum in Phila.
One at the Spokane Opera House which was more memorable for the scenic Drive than the actual performance. That would have been 1996 -> ish when they started to dial it all in for a while.
I'm thinking Salem Armory in OR was one of the Primal mid-90's Phish shows I've witnessed, maybe 1994. They might have released a "Live Phish" CD set of that one. The same year's Hult Centre in Eugene is also worth a listen.
Some people don't quite realize that once the Phish saw the GD crashing & burning, they sought the opportunity to be a much Huger touring band and invested in Bigger Sound & Light gear.
SET 1: Tuesday[1], Peaches en Regalia > Free, Roggae, Sugar Shack, Maze, Horn, Crazy Sometimes[1] > 46 Days > Runaway Jim
SET 2: Down with Disease[2] > Mountains in the Mist > Waves > Ghost > Wombat > Chalk Dust Torture
ENCORE: The Squirming Coil
[1] Phish debut.
[2] Unfinished.
This show featured the Phish debuts of Tuesday and Crazy Sometimes and was webcast for free via LivePhish. DWD was unfinished. Trey quoted Waves at the end of Ghost.
If anyone sees, and could post some of the links to second set openers....27 min Simple (sat pm) ...20 min Carini (sunday pm)..and 20 min. Down w Disease (last night)...all if them were just sick...especially those first two...Simple had a crazy jam( about half way thru ) that achieves lift off for sure
Of course, theyve played come together 2x before, in 95, and 2011...but, its still listed on website tonite as debut....
Fire that kid....
Must be around my great grand childrens age...
Thanks terrapin radio on mixlr, for another great stream, and lots of good scopes out there til mid second set when they all just stopped at same time....
Funny about the streams dropping out; I heard most of set II up to 'Contact' but then could not get any Mixlr pages to load correctly. It would just say "Buffering" and act all frozen-up.
Been an interesting batch over the last week. Some new tunes, some TAB stuff and interesting lengthy jams. Looking forward to catching the first couple 'Donuts" this weekend.
And i also lost second set in middle, stream dropped etc...im hearing the "come together" may be a new Trey tune and not Beatles song that Phish covered (butchered?) In 95 and 2011, so, thats why its listed as Phish Debut...
^^^ agreed, Disco...five shows, lots of phish debuts, no repeats.....msg rehearsal for sure!!
This is gonna be fun...sorry, i cant make this initial wknd, DS, after just getting back from Dallas and all, it just wont work...but, as youre all prob bored from hearing by now...this is my son Luke's favorite band, and his birthday is 8/5....so, ill couch tour first string for sure, and go from there...i hope to be at a cpl shows, looking at wednesdays, thursdays, and Sundays mostly
Yep, it can take old deadheads quite some time to "Get Phish" - speaking from personal experience, but no doubt there is something very real and major league to "Get" with Phish.
I consider myself extremely fortunate to have "Been shown the Light" with Phish. It took me a long while and had to be Shown! I kinda feel sorry for the folks who don't have friends to show them the light, or are close-minded, or bitter, or gave ita REAL chance and just don't like it. This band has so much going on it can be hard to" ge"t if you don't want it. Such a improvisational wonder, huge talent, incredible synergy on stage, musician who listen to each other as much as top notch jazz musicians, have highlarious and very intelligent sense of humor (This is a piece many folks don't understand). This band rips and is willing to take chances as much as or more than Phil these days! And for those full-on naysayers, listen hard and you will actually found some extremely profound lyrics. Yep, they'll never have a Robert Hunter but, most likely nobody ever will again!!
I get to see lots of Phish, Phil, Trey Band these days..... I am one lucky muthafuckah!!!
Saw Phish 90 98 and they were on fire. Best band at the time. Then they got tiresome for me. Then I found String Cheese. Then I came back around to Phil and Friends. Just never went back to Phish. These days I know I can rely on SCI to put on a fun show with a lot less hassle than most. The scene is positive, the music is authentic and the band is having as much fun as the audience. It feeds my inner hippie. Red Rocks this weekend and tickets were $33fri $34sat and $35 sun. To celebrate their 33,34,35th RR shows.

While the tonite show version of "Squirming Coil" might not be up to the famoous versions of 1979, it sounds pretty OK.
These guys are pretty stoked that they sold out 13 nights at MSG and have already covered their kids' University tuition for the next few years.
I bet they are not worried about too many car payments next month.

One of my many "I don't get
One of my many "I don't get Phish" stories:
New Haven coliseum, 11/24/98, encore (background: I'd been seeing them 2 - 4 times a year since 1990)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9s2q2CfVqpY

This is interesting stuff to read.

From the small chunks I've heard, Night # 2 Chicago sounded the most coherent and Flowing so far.
Interesting Debut tunes amongst the sets, which will some day fit in better.
Pittsburgh just might be the Magic Practice Night, with another couple Debut tunes and getting Sound / Lights totally dialed in for NYC.
Or they could get all Nutty liek the "Dark Side Of The Moon" in Utah that time.

OK -- Jambone,
OK -- Jambone,
I think that you are Correct, and that I was mixing up "Steve Pollak" aka "Dude of Life" w/ the poster artist Jim Pollock or similar.

Yep, it can take old
Yep, it can take old deadheads quite some time to "Get Phish" - speaking from personal experience, but no doubt there is something very real and major league to "Get" with Phish.
