Phil Lesh Will Celebrate His Grateful Dead Birthday Shows at Terrapin Crossroads

Phil80_0.png

After announcing a surprise Superbowl Sunday show with members of Dawes, Phil Lesh revealed that he will begin his 80th birthday year with a batch of tributes to Grateful Dead shows that were performed on his birthday, March 15.

Those shows include 3/15/69, 3/15/73 and 3/15/90.

Early Dead shows in 1967 and 1968 were also performed on March 15, however setlists for those shows are unknown.

Phil Lesh’s Dead birthday shows are scheduled for Feb. 10 and 11 (with Stu Allen, Grahame Lesh and John Molo) as well as Feb. 17 (with Stu Allen, Scott Law and John Molo).

Additional birthday-themed shows will be announced in the near future.

It's a beautiful thing!

He's definitely getting back out there. I think he sat in last night with whoever played in the Grate Room, and he's adding shows every week.

More importantly, he looks healthy & spry, and while he may not blow the roof off a room with his thunder anymore, his playing is still articulate, endlessly creative and ultimately brilliant.

Long Live Phil Lesh!!!!!

I attended the 3/15/90 show at the Cap Center in Landover, Maryland. I think it was the last of a 3 show run. Music was good.  Law enforcement bad. I didn't get kicked out of a show, or hauled off to jail, but got threatened with such action more than once, for heinous infractions involving public cannabis consumption. Decided to avoid the Cap Center in 1991, then after spring tour I moved to California, and never went to another east coast GD show.

Tofu, if they do 3/15/90 I'm sure TxR security would be willing to recreate that experience for you.

They're a very accommodating bunch there.

Haha like a Dark Star Orchestra thing going beyond-the-music, complete with busts and other tour hassles, sounds fun. I checked the archives. I was there on 3/15/90 which was the middle show, but it was actually the next night 3/16/90 when my friend and I almost got tossed for lighting up a bowl during Scarlet Begonias. Damn. Fun idea though.

That’s the spirit!

A little useless Tofu Touch Trivia: The aforementioned Cap Center was the venue of my 1st Dead Show 9/15/82 (Phil's half birthday). Debut of Touch Of Grey as encore. I am therefore an Original Touch Head, 5 years before the frat boys joined the party after the single hit the charts with a bullet. The pre-MTV Touch Of Grey, before Phil's delicious bass lines got muddied with radio friendly bells and whistles.

The show was mid-week, tickets at the box office, empty seats upstairs.

3-15-73 my first  show

'The only two...'

LOL

The line-up for the 3/17 show is now Phil, Stu Allen, Scott Law, Adam MacDougall and Scott Amendola.

^Thanks for the update.

I'm looking forward to seeing Phil tonight (it's been awhile).

Enjoy the show, Johnny D!

Cheers!

Tonight's show is now Sean Nelson on drums instead of Scott Amendola. Scott cut his hand and is "out of commish".

I'm sorely disappointed and not sure about making the drive. If anybody is looking for tickets contact me by e-mail.

Sean has a good drummer, will still be a great show.

AWWW!

I was looking forward to seeing Scotty with Phil again. His smooth stream-of-consciousness style really brings out the gentle spaciness of the music. I just saw him last week at a Nels Cline show and he said he was excited to be playing some R&R with Phil again. Poop.

Still, Stu & Scott Law are a fine combo and Phil is Phil so I'm sure it will be fun. The only question is what format/how long will the show go? Phil has been looking spry and healthy since he's been back, but he's kept these 2020 shows to around two hours of music (which to these aging bones has been working OK for the couple of shows I've seen).

We'll find out soon enough. I hope to see some of you in the little room tonight.

Scott was my reason to chose tonight. I haven't seen him play with Phil and was looking forward to seeing how it would flow. The recent Amendola vs Blades shows at SFJazz were amazing.4FB96F17-A13A-4149-B2F2-B18359B5F698.jpeg

still blissed out ( after a trying medical journey this week)

just wow - talk about spry, and and about blessings, and spaciness, and roots

thank you all
