Midnight Hour

Just home after 90 minutes on the highway. They jammed, jammed , jammed and then sung a verse or two is a bit of an exaggeration but not too much....

Lots of smiles onstage for te 12/3 of the show.

Sunshine of your Love was played loud, soft, dissolved and then soft and loud again. Guessing it was 20 minutes. My son's woman friend was at her first GD related show and she was impressed, but a bit beat up by all the jamming by the end of the night - it seemed a lot even for The Q - not at all a bad thing, but I've seen these guys 60-70 times. They reeled it in a bit when Phil stood up to sing Pride and fell back a few steps just barely making his chair with the quick help from his body man. Phil stood back up and did the whole song, but then played the rest of the set sitting down, and looked really unsteady as he was helped off stage.

A quick Midnight Hour, no donor rap, no bows, just "thank you for coming".

Really worried about this 85 y/o man playing 3 nights in a row next week.Even Phil is mortal....

^^^
While Phil's playing was as good as usual and his voice sounded reasonably strong, he certainly looked very unstable especially in the second set. It was tough to watch and unsettling and made me sad. Not sure what his issues currently are besides being 84, but you would think he wouldn't have committed to doing these 5 shows if he didn't feel he was able too. That being said musically it was still The Q. They still have that incredible chemistry and there were was some fabulous jamming. Still all in all a very enjoyable show. Looking forward to Wednesday's show. I believe it's the first time I've seen him where he didn't do a donor rap.

So tough to see Phil wavering physically but so great to see him playing and still giving it everything he's got!!! Hard to see the physical issues but it's REALLY concerning that he wasn't able to do a Donor Rap. I'm sure that's one of the most important things in his life.

But still...... PHIL IS THE GODDAM MAN!!!!!!

Phil is giving it his all and and I have been appreciating every performance in recent years more than ever.  It was shocking to see him looking so frail last night, so much different than when I saw I'm at the Salt Shed last year.  I thought he actually fell backwards right before Cucamonga and someone had to help him to the chair :-(

Looking forward to Wednesday for another shot of The Q!  Rest up Phil

It was incredibly sad to watch.  Phil should retire immediately.  Most of the show was a musical trainwreck.  If he has to sit down through most of the show, then it's time.  So terrible, you can't watch the stream again on Fans.live.

I saw Bobby last year and he needed to sit mid show, looked tipsy, frail and sickly and playing slower than usual.

Later heard he was recovering from a flu bug.

Of course Phil is older, but who knows?

And musicians needing to sit isn't a sin.

The music is always subjective, and those nostalgic for the Q probably don't care.

Phil is not well.  He looked confused, befuddled, played wrong notes all night long.  Sitting was the least of his problems.  Plus, he needed 2 handlers around him to keep him steady at the end.

Phil has been on a graceful decline for a bit now, it seems each time I see him, a bit more is chipped away. I don't wish for him to do anymore than he wants to do and would never suggest to someone that they give up what they love, I have a fellow canoe racer who is now 82 and can't remember what happened 2 minutes prior but this May we will head out on another 70 mile race together...put him in a boat on a river and he knows just what to do and is in his element.

enjoy every moment, everyone is just playing for time

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6U_3UsKd7JM

Maybe he got a contact high.

Yikes.

Honestly, he looked somewhat discombobulated at the Fillmore in December.

New rule - no musician 80 years old or older should play Grateful Dead music..... (hear that, Mickey?). It is best served with a nod to the exuberance of youth.

Honestly, he looked somewhat discombobulated at the Fillmore in December.

He sure did and I've skipped the subsequent shows. The stream was difficult to watch last night.

He should sit for the rest of the run. BB King sat for the last few years, Willie sits. They used to wheel Johnny Winter out in a wheelchair..though not at it's peak Phil played and sang well.. except he lost track in half step... Last nights show has me agreeing with Haley, Trump and Biden are too old...

Peter Frampton sits, and still rocks

Steve Kimock has been sitting for well over 20 years and so what!!!

((( Fitz ))) sorry to miss you but yeah, I got emotional a few times...it is a blessing to be able to see him now !

We had major asshole drama in handicap and it buzzkilled me for a whole, the asshats that were causing the drama....didn't even know who they were seeing and sat on phone most of nite and yakking it up :(

Fiscane, was super sweet to finally meet you and share the show together !

Also got some Mr and Mrs  Poz luv( these kids don't age...still as beautiful as ever... and a few others...super sweet for me as I don't travel much for shows with my MS....I have some amazing music memories to hold close to my heart,

Chillin in room tonight and Wed front row balcony <3

 luv you guys

My son is a musician in New Orleans and all of the musicians in town sit.
And this probably wouldn't be a topic if Phil looked comfortable when sitting and playing.
There must be some 'zero g' type way that Phil can sit and play for us -
If he wants too, and it looks like he does.

SO glad I'm going for his  Birthday.. and that Italien restaurant on the Island

Me tooooooo Tom.  Sooooooo glad!!!  See you next week.  Safe travels.

Put me in the Phil shouldn't sit camp.  Look how it worked out for Michael Houser.

I did not see the show, but love Phil and this band. I have been dealing with balance issues for the last 2 1/2 years and I am 20 years younger than he is

If he needs to sit, the so be it. It is better than falling over. I can tell you from experience that balance issues affect every part of your life. I have to use a walking stick for my daily walks and wear braces on both legs.

The hardest part was understanding what was up and how to handle it. Geterdun Phil. I will be streaming the Wed show

The long flight and jet lag are tough to shake off but I had adjusted well over the 2 days in respect to being alert for the show. Getting in was a breeze and I made my way to the floor parking my ass in front of the soundboard closest to Jimmy and Phil. Like always the sound in front of the board was crystal clear and got better with every song. By second set sound was dialed in.  I was super psyched.  It was my first show in 6 years.  Being back at the Cap was marvelous but seeing the Q was surreal and dream-like. The opening was classic Q, spacey and transformative. The band had smiles from ear to ear.

I got GA based on my budget and the desire to be face to face with Phil and the band. It was Joyful. The first set was a classic Q builder with great jamming.  You may be asking. yourself if the band had obvious ring rust and the answer was yes but it was par for the course.  This was pure Q experimenting and moving forward with no fear. They shook off the rust and it was like a rocket ship.  Sorry that I can not do a song by song review but I merely want to say I arrived with no expectations and was super happy with the first set bands performance.  You could tell the band has not lost a step and the band came to impress.  The playing and jamming was very good and the song selection I felt was exceptional.  The band was hot and continually building momentum.  What amazed me was the band was driven and explored. They changed up the jams and had quite a few WTF moments but that to me was classic Q.  I could not have asked for more for a first set.

The 2nd set opened and the band took it up a notch. Song selection and jamming were fantastic. Phil was a monster and also animated leading the band in to the familiarity of  unchartered territory.  I want to say something that I think many of us fin attendance felt.  This was special.  At times Phil was as good as I had ever seen him. This was  a Phil set instrumentally and vocally more powerful then any I can remember. It was intimate and moving in many ways. Warren was on point but Jimmy Fucking Herring had so many improvisational jams.  Jimmy was superb, and for me ,this night, the lead guitar.   The band worked hard tonight to make the show not only special but exceptional.  This was a tribute to the Phans but the 4 band members made this a tribute to honor Phil. The song selection and playing were again hot but the level of the jamming was Ginormous.  Do not get me wrong there were a few improv glitches but this only added to the authenticity of the Q.

Phils efforts to be his best were so appreciated but I, who had not seen Phil up close for many years, seen for the first time a frail Phil. Seeing his need for assistance after losing his balance more then once was emotional.  It made me understand why the band was so keen on getting together once again and how lucky I was to be here.  All i can say is if you were on the fence about seeing the Q,  do not be any longer and  get your ass to the Capitol.

Dude is going to turn 84 next week.  If the guy wants a chair, let him have it.  Sure has earned it and hope I am still rocking and a rolling at his age.

Well said, K

Got me a little teared up.

What hammer said, KK

people obsessing over whether or not musicians are sitting is so weird. im in my 30s and have some minor chronic back issues, sometimes its hard for me to stand the whole show! standing/sitting really makes no difference, it should be about the quality of the music and improvisation.

i think he should sit the whole show, forever. never stand again. fuck em

Same here. Thanks for entirely echoing my feelings exactly. The performance and met expectations for this old deadhead.

Great song selection and lots of good energy.

Count your musical blessings.

I wonder if part of what I am hearing here is that people are worried about Phil and think his sitting during shows is an indication that he may not be feeling as robust as he once did and that we love Phil and want him to feel good and healthy. I mean otherwise what difference would it make If he's sitting or standing if he can play the music he wants to play. He has respect for himself, his fellow musicians, phans and the music, and he and Jill will make decisions about how to take care of himself and what he needs. I get that it is scary to see him unsteady. For sure.

Go, Phil!

Ok, sitting, standing, whatever.
But no donor rap?
That speaks volumes.

Say! I like Phil Lesh and Friends!
I do! I like them, Fan-I-Ams!
And I would hear them in the City.
And I would hear them when they’re shitty...
And I will watch them, on my phone.
And in the dark. And all alone.
And in a bar. Or stream for free.
They are so good, so good, you see!

So I will see them when they jam.
And I will see them with son Grahame.
And I will watch them from my house.
And I will watch them though I grouse.
And I will see them here and there.
Say! I will see Phil in a chair!
I do so like Phil Lesh and Friends!
Thank you! Thank you, Fan-I-Ams.

Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night
By Dylan Thomas

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

No donor rap tho?

I was there. 5 feet off the rail. Dead center. Unobstructed view of Phil throughout. It was scary. Phil, go home and rest. If you choose to play on, I will be there to enthusiastically cheer you on the next 4 shows.

Giving this a listen now, and finishing up the first set.

this band came out and hit em with the g's right from the git-go. Hit em with the goodness, and there are complaints?

I know I was not there but this sounds like the goods to me, Molo just weaving down the highway, driving it fast and driving it slow just like going by that daily speed trap, masterful wheel man. Light years ahead of Dead Co

It seems most of the shock is coming from appearance and not the music. bob Dylan is pretty tender on his feet as well at this point and sits or stands at a piano for his entire show now. Willie sits for the entire show. If that's what makes him happy and he's still able to get us to the groove,  don't care if he sits or lays on a couch ...I'm eternally grateful just to have him here at all

IMG_1688.jpeg

It was a tough watch. First thing we noticed just about everyone on the rail was frowning. Then Phil took the tumble back into the chair. To us it seemed the chair was inadequate. I think he needs a more permanent seating option, one that lets the bass be in his preferred position as it really seems he had trouble playing seated until he found the right spot. Real life is not pretty and at some point it becomes impossible to ignore...Let Phil sit!!!

I miss Phil

I've decided to go.
Actively seeking ticket....

My original comment about Phil sitting wasn't meant to be a discussion about sitting or not sitting. I couldn't care less what a musician wants to do while playing. That's their choice. But rather it was the unsettling aspect of seeing Phil dealing with this situation and whatever health issues that might be attributing to it, and what in might inevitably lead to. That being said there was nothing wrong with his playing or singing. Still on point. I was totally thrilled with the show and can't wait for tonight.

^^^^^THIS

I don't think Phil was in any mind to give an donor rap the other night.  Looked like the lights were on but no on was home to me.

Say what you want, but Phil is cooked.  I would prefer to remember him as the vibrant, earth shaking, chest thumping bass player that he WAS.  Not the frail over the hill senior that he is.

Fitzman, do you prefer a young, virile load of Mayernnaise in your ear?? I wonder.

Noone has mentioned that Phil was blowing his nose profusely the entire show. Perhaps, rather than being senile, over the hill, and decrepit, Phil was actually just fighting through an illness. It's hard to be high energy when you can't breath properly. He could have called in sick, but that's not what he did.

I, for one, am grateful for the music he made. Phil is all that's left of the Real Thing. We had better appreciate him while we can.

> do you prefer a young, virile load of Mayernnaise in your ear?

That's a question much better suited for Andy Cohen, I think.

>>>I, for one, am grateful for the music he made. Phil is all that's left of the Real Thing. We had better appreciate him while we can.<<<

Oh please.  Spare me the platitudes or tell it to someone who might give a shit.  I am grateful for all the music that Phil  has given us too,  But now, it is overpriced garbage.  Most lemmings here couldn't distinguish between noodling to nowhere or true jamming with purpose.  I got off the unicorn and fairy dust train a long time ago.  YMMV.

Love your review KK and hope you are there now watching Night of a Thousand Stars as opposed to me in my suit at my desk streaming it with my headphones.

Trailhead, check emails. It may be too late, but...

^ Oh crap, wrong thread.

LLOLLO THAT PIC THO!

on weds they showed that huddle pre 2nd set (:

i love love loved this show

it gave me all the feels of 2001, regardless Phil's being BLOWNOVER by our collective LOVEWAVE

and, even tho i was one of the "worried ones" after that night, in my heart I knew We would never let him down, and it was def our vibery that was part of what Carried him onto weds so he could go and REDDY KILLOWATT all over us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

omg i just fucking adore him to the depths of my soul

(((((with me and phil it's permanent)))))

Yep that pic made me tear up, thought others would like it.

My theory on a factor that contributed to his near-fall backwards during Pride:  Rugs and sticky sneaker soles don't mix.  Going barefoot might help his balance.

I have minor nerve / spine issues due to a fall from long ago and do a lot better when I'm wearing barefoot style shoes.. not sneakers...though I do love wearing platforms at shows sometimes , against my better judgment.

Watched the replay last night on FANS and man that band just rocks!
