Phil on the Q

Forums:

JAMBASE: Fair enough. Phil, you mentioned continuing to do select Phil & Friends shows. The one lineup people always ask about is the Q. That involves scheduling five very busy people, but do you think there will be more Q shows?

PL: Any chance I get I would love to go to the Q. As you noted it’s so complicated to do, but we always have that in our back pocket. We’re constantly communicating with everybody seeing whether or not it can be done. Stay tuned, I would say.

bring it to

nyc/philly/boston

rehearse and charge 150/ticket.

but rehearse.

150? Why not 175 or 200 we all just got that tax rebate

>>> but rehearse.

PLQ at the Xmas Jam was just alright. (Last time I saw the Q)

"Yes, I'm talking 'bout practice."

bring it to the northwest, specifically the Cuthbert Amphi in Eugene, because we rarely get Phil shows. Cuthbert is the perfect size..

Except for Baracco with DSO, the rest of them aren't particularly loaded with dates, so far. Mule will add more, so will WSP, probably, but hopefully there will be 5 - 14 days this year they are all available.

NYC/philly/Boston<<<<<<>>>>>>>

Seriously. Do 13

shows. Cake it up, plays some good tunes. Old man should have at least that left in him no? Just in case Phil is lurking. I know every body has full time projects on tops of side projects but might be fun. Just would take some planning ahead.

>>>Cake it up, plays some good tunes.

YES!!! Cake it up! Thank you

Only way the Q happens if is Grahame, Ross, & Koford are also onstage, in that case Count Me Out regardless, No Regerts . . .

Cake it up! <<

This sounds like something in one of those "What are your children talking about?" articles.

Alphabetically, somewhere between "AF" and "Molly".

Cake? Old terminology. Probably a baby boomer term.

Practice ...you talking bout practice ....and Grahame and Ross weren’t on stage when phil played w Moe at Lockn this past summer....so there is always a chance...we shall see....

moe is awful

I dunno. The Q shows I saw in recent times at TXR and the Cap were OK. They’ll never get back to an elevated level again, unless it’s a tour, which won’t happen. If Phil is going to play with some pros again, I’d take a fresh lineup over the Quintet.

Phil, as is his right at 78 or any age, is focusing his energy on positioning Grahame to continue to develop as a musician and garner a following that he can then use as his own path as he so chooses.

He teed things up way back when he had both kids play at the Cap to a sparse crowd as an opener to his own P&F show. Brian, clearly chose a different path. Grahame obviously went all in. I saw Grahame join P&F at Terrapin Crossroads when it opened in March 2012. He was on stage with Larry Campbell and JK. Observing him then and beyond, while certainly having a leg up on many simply by birthright, he has at least appeared to be humble, dedicated and striving to continue to get better. When not playing as the Family Band, Grahame is out there cutting his teeth and slow boat touring with Midnight North playing some gigs to small crowds in small venues (bars) while schlepping equipment around, etc.

Obviously and simply based on ages and limited experience, the Family Band kids are no Campbell, Haynes, Russo, Herring, Chimenti, etc. That's just physically impossible. However, some, if not all, continue to get better. The shows at Lockn were very enjoyable. They are able to work and play as a "band" which even with a Q reunion, many comments above speak to wanting "rehearsals" or "practice" if they ever come back together. Most on this board and at P&F shows at places like the Cap when they were more regular under the Shapiro-Lesh contract years, know that we ended up getting shows where some talented "friends" joined in, but it was sometimes painfully clear that they often showed up for 4:00pm soundcheck and met for the first time with showtime a mere couple of hours later. Shows were most always big fun, but certainly could've been better with, as this thread says "practice".

Suspect we may see the Q at a fest like Lockn where the challenge of scheduling can be mitigated by having the players other bands there. Maybe, late night set in Garcia's Forest?

no one is going to pay to see graham lesh play music when phil dies.

^^Ive seen every cap run except for 3, and i have seen Graham and Ross James since they first came on the seen here on the East side and they have both become way way better musicians. Ross and Graham can articulate and garner deff crowd responce with there playing ability now and will continue to get better. I really like the TFB with Melvin, Krasno, and Bluhm in Central Park, and the last Halloween run, that show was good, i just felt they lacked anyone who could have produced a serious GD mind-melter solo, and they still cant and need a strong strong lead player. I for one, hope Niki Bluhm is a permanent member of TFB she rocks it. Ive had a great time at all the shows and i totally agree the music, in some instances have been lackluster and have left me scratchin my head wondering "why"?, though all in all big fun for sure and i hope it continues for as long as i can stand it.
