Phil in Philly

Forums:

Sunday Sept 9th at festival pier in penns landing..I assume it is the same peeps playing Central Park and the Cap ..probably another  Cap show on Friday the 7th as well..

Actually it’s the unbroken train thingy w twiddle and midnight north...

sounds terrible.

Does twiddle dude have more "soul" than Mayer?

^^^

they r both  terrible ... in a nails on the chalkboard kind of way..

Terrible site.

I saw Twiddle dude jam with Phil in Portland and at Red Rocks, his guitar was good but I think his voice takes a little time to get used to.

Absolutely Terrible Site, as I remember it. In 2008 PLF played there and I remember somewhere during Rosemary or Morning Dew, all the night clubs in the surrounding area started blasting dance music and drowned out the end of the show, which happened to be the more quiet, and resolving part of the set. Apparently as soon as the clock struck the hour (11 or whatever it was) all the clubs just cranked their systems. Buzzkill to say the least. Maybe this time around Phil will start and end the show earlier so that doesn't happen.

^^^^^Quite the contrast to the night before at Penn's Peak, 3 sets, 2nd was acoustic, cool breezes in the Pocono Mountains^^^^^

I was at both shows and the contrast was jarring, to say the least. I haven't been back to the Pier since. The saving grace for that show was Levon Helm's set. It was total sweetness.

Define soul. I must admit that I rather enjoyed Mahali when I saw him solo a few months ago and am looking forward to seeing him solo again in a few weeks on the beach in Asbury Park.

I concur with this opinion.

Phil's set wasn't bad, but the atmosphere was that of a drunken frat party even before the other clubs cranked up their music.  I was amazed that Phil even attempted Rosemary in that setting.

Opening NFL Sunday....that used to be lockn weekend..

That night at the Peak was so great!

That 2008 show was where  met Bob ...:)  I agree the thumping from the clubs was horrid, most  of them have closed I believe. I will go only because it is so close and well, it is Phil ...after all !  I also come back from a vaca at our beach house the day before.

I do love when Phil comes to my backyard !!

Have not been back since '08.

I hear they have sand for your feet these days.

Went to that one as well.

Phil was sporting his Prince-esque Bass,  which I believe he soon donated to some museum.

Stu, you mean The Ritter? I saw pics of him playing it at Lockn last year I think...

That's a different Ritter in that photo.

This is the bass from above:

I believe that the one you are referring to was named the Eye of the Horus:

Or was it the Whore of the Iris?

Phil was still happily playing a Modulus at the Penn's Landing show, as this photo shows.

^^^Now that is a beutiful Bass. I like the red and black Ritter too, but the Modulus is my fav.

I tawt I taw a puddytat...

Above wiki citation has Phil on the Prince bass 7-3-2008 in St. Louis.

Don't recall the date of the Philly show,  but could have sworn he had the (then) new blue Ritter.

I never really liked that thing anyway.

The date the above photo from the Phil Lesh & Friends show at The Festival Pier at Penn's Landing Philadelphia, PA is 6/20/08. The Ritter had not made an appearance yet.

This is why I never make it to jury duty...  my recollections are only semi-reliable.

Jury officer:  So you claim that you attended that Phil show ?

DS:  Yes indeedy, I was there.

JO:  And you consumed the Psychedelic Ayahuasca there ?

DS:  No sir,  no one offered me the Root & Vine brew.

JO:  But you would have consumed it,  if proferred ?

DS:  Maybe,  I forget who drove that evening.  I had Bacon w/ Eggs that morning,  and listened to Kezar Stadium '73.

JO:  Based on your testimony,  you are absolved of jury duty.

I didn't think Phil was playing the Ritter at that time either, and I too, LOVE that Modulus pictured above! It has always been my favorite Phil Bass. I feel like the tone of the Ritter was just a little too subdued for what I have come to love from Phil. It did fit in the mix well with the Larry/Jackie lineup, as that was a little more of a straightforward rock outfit. The Alembic that he plays with now is stunning and an amazing instrument, it just does not have the same presence and punch of the Modulus TBX. I know his rig has changed as well, but I long for that tone of the 2001-2007ish years. It always was so authoritative and supple.

While I am going on about the Modulus, I recall a great memory for me. Phil had been using the Eye of the Horus with Furthur for quite a while, and when I made my first trip to Radio City Music Hall on 2/23/10, I was in awe of the beauty and history of the place. And to open up they busted into The Other One Jam>Playin' and Phil had brought back the trusty Modulus! It was an amazing moment for me, my favorite bass player, playing my favorite instrument, dropping an Other One bomb to open the show in the heart of American entertainment. Pure Bliss!

Oof, what a nightmare "venue" that Festival Pier is. The concrete slab it sits on is just murder on the feet. And the clubs surrounding it that had the annoying booming coming out of them were just awful. I remember at points (esp. during Rosemary) actually straining to hear.

Chuck, I’ve been told the floor is now covered in sand

Sand would def be an improvement over the concrete. And if the clubs around it aren’t open, it changes things.

Plus a Phil show would be a cool way to cap off the weekend of the Zerb get together/benefit.

I'm still not going.....

Tempted to go because it's close and the chances to see Phil are getting fewer.

However, I took an oath that I would never pay money to see Ross James.  Is he going to be in the band?

$68.75 with fees.  For 1 set of the family band?  No thank you.

We get it Keith...you don’t like the family band.

^

Yes. We totally get it.

It is a SUNDAY show...

Although I wasn't crazy about that venue,  it might be a possibility.

Doubt it though.

>>I'm still not going.....

No brainer.

There are no cool shows this fall

I think I am going to the Family Band in Burlington. Its not my fav, but its a chance for the kids to see Phil, which I think is pretty cool.
