Phil Lesh's set at Lock'n

Forums:

I'm not sure if anyone still discusses Phil on this new zone, but we heard a bunch of Phil's set on satellite radio on a recent roadtrip.

Gotta admit, I was not  super excited for the "family band", but with Warren fanning the flames, they really caught something.

Unbroken Chain was pretty solid & magical, I thought.

We stopped to grab some food, and then hopped back in the car a short while later. It was still Phil, but we were both like, "What happened?"
It was as if someone had sucked all the electricity & energy out of the equation.

Jen jokingly asked, "What, did Bobby get up & join them or something?"
Only took a couple minutes to realize that was exactly what happened!

I am amazed at this stage of the game, that Bob is still up there, ruining Grateful Dead music.
The man really should have put down the guitar & microphone 5 or 10 years ago.
Or at least not still try to keep up with talented musicians like a 77 year old Phil Lesh.

Yes, Phil has lost some sparkle, but Bob has lost all appeal. I feel like he's just a sad embarrassment for the GD music scene at this point.
I mean, not as embarrassing as the drummers, but still just bad.

Like any stream, I'm sure it was much better in person. But regarding just the music coming out of our speakers, Bob killed it. And not in a good way.

oh, i see the webcast discussion now. I am just late to the game.

I think Sideshow was right on the money about Warren bailing Phil out of an otherwise underwhelming experience, ala S.O.B.'s.

I've been told that every show i ever went to sucked including Phil with Warren.

ok....

I am definitely not a huge Warren fan, but the difference in the chemistry with Phil's band was markedly different than with the Bobslob.

I'm not "telling" you anything sucked, except Bob for the last 10 years.
He still picks talented musicians to "back" him, which is why he can still take the stage. It's just embarrassing.

has phil ever played a good set at lockn?

that said, we knew it wouldn't this year, again, as the TFB is pure trash.

I wouldn't know. Never listened to lockn before, and I am definitely not in the class of people that can afford Shapiro-co productions.
Spent my $ on the Shapitol on 2 occasions, probably won't have the means to again.

Cheap

Can I get those last few minutes of my life back?

bob has a very interesting way of playing chords with noise during jams, and phhrasing his licks in really interesting ways. i get, and agree with most of the flak bobby is given here on the zone...but i would take deadco/almost any electric dead weir lineup over TFB any day. despite all his issues, bobby with a strong band behind him can still bring moments of psychedelia and unexpected playing...TFB is just a bar band. and for all the flak he gets for "shatnerizing" songs, at least he does not sound like a dying bear getting gang raped by a mediocre bar band

Though it was mostly derivative blues in E I enjoyed the Santana, Sless, Warren one alright.

^oh yeah, forgot about that band. decent, i agree.

forever to b known as the time Phil almost tried at lockn.

Bob was not the problem.

That UC was so-so at best. Like I said before, should just do it as an instrumental.

Lol @ daylight........

Did the crickets and cicadas sing, or was that just Phil?

They need a second drummer,

and the lead guitarist was too low in the [webcast] mix.

Weren't Phil and Bob supposed to to play Terrapin or am I thinking of something else?

Phil is great, of course. The keyboard guy is decent, but no one will confuse him with Mydland or Chimenti.

Grahame has improved as a guitarist but can't sing.

The drummer and other guitar player are both really bad.

TFB Friday night - mehtastic.

I'd even say it was Mehxtraordinary

Setlist for those of us that were there?

I thought Phil's set w TFB was better than the Terrapin Station album cover set w TFB & Bobby. I thought it was cool & loved seeing Bobby perform a few songs w JRAD last night.
