Phil Lesh proper attire

Forums:

The real Phil, oblivious to the simplest modus operandi of fashion decency. Unsightly but also somewhat punk in it's overall mentality.

I rue the day that Jill threw out his Gap wardrobe for slick John Varvatos jeans and Bergdorf Goodman scarfs. It was a seminal and unsettling shift in the Phil Lesh time and space continuum.

I think that photograph might have been taken on July 4th, 1990 in Bonner Springs, Kansas

Maybe Jill just wanted to turn off any groupies that might want to be with her man!?

Looks like a grandparent who is headed to his grandkid's elementary school's field day. Or he's headed to Disney World.

I used to dress like that for pickup basketball, except I wore high top sneakers...I was never the first pick.

I just got three pairs of striped tube socks.

^  I hope you wear long pants over them!

I'm no fashionista but that look is not pretty. They might laugh at you in Paris or Milan. But who cares in reality.

Pass me the sunglasses.

Looks like Phil just dropped a bomb to me. He can wear anything he wants, as long as he keeps rattling my bones.

I suspect Bobby isn't entirely "dressing himself" these days either.

Dear god why is that Bob pic so large? On a desktop here, lol.

> I suspect Bobby isn't entirely "dressing himself" these days either.

The beard lets Bob get away with just about any clothes he chooses.

The system wouldn't allow me to upload, so I linked to it ... tried to set the max-width, but didn't pan out.

Yeah, he gets away with it, but I've detected the presence of "outfits" in recent years ... and remember, unlike Phil, he also has two daughters who've probably seen tons of footage of how he used to dress and are chomping at the bit.

>>>>^  I hope you wear long pants over them!

Grey sweats with the scrunch ankle.

I think Weir as a school dropout at 16 and a member of the scene since 64 has earned his right to clothe himself as he pleases. I may think it's absurd and WEIRd but.......

> I've detected the presence of "outfits" in recent years

Bobby was prone to outfits throughout the 80s. Purple polo and jeans, or cut-offs.

Yeah, but not sure if he's used "props" in the same way as the hats / scarves ... and how they're matched with poncho or other "top".

Phil is wearing a quasi outfit in the OP, but looks far more to be a guy's outfit.

Having said that, I think Bobby is a good sport if he's letting wife and daughters help with what he's wearing on stage.

I'd say Bob's definitely dressing in a more decorative style these days with the poncho, hat, scarves, and beads--the tie is a nice touch too in the above pic--but I'd also maintain that he's always seemed more image conscious than other members of the band. That said, I prefer his current look over his clamdiggers and Birks stylings from recent years. I also think I know what Bob might have to say about all of this.

I know it's comparing apples to oranges, but since Bobby ( and Phil)  have shared a stage with him, John Mayer's fashion choices ( Fanny pack?!) take the cake. Luckily, he rips on guitar so it really doesn't matter what he wears.

Fanny packs are functional.

Indeed, and not a bad choice for hiking or even traveling. I prefer a backpack. Either look absurd on stage. And so do sweatpants.

A Brief History of Ponchos

When I see men with fanny packs (especially in front, and extra-especially when it's leather), I know there is at least a wood/stone/proto pipe and an old crusty ass pack of zig zags in there.

it's a lot like profiling

Black hemp is the way to go.

The ankle cuff is the key to turning your sweats into shorts.

Hockey jerseys, rainbow pants and poncho vests = muy a la moda!

Ponchos are great for hiding your beer belly.

and a hemostat

Now this is a fashion statement ensemble from Salvation Army

Anyone know what happened to that jacket. I read there was a matching guitar strap that was sold at auction.

Has Phil ever worn a poncho?

Jerry clearly rocked the poncho very well!

I can't help but wonder if this is where Bobby gets it from ... like a little kid copying his older brother?

https://www.gq.com/story/bob-weir-grateful-dead-profile

He is especially excited about an idea for a Mexican poncho (or perhaps it's a serape) that has pockets, inspired by a garment he was given by a Oaxacan textile collective while performing at Dead & Company's Playing in the Sand festival in Riviera Maya last year: “It's warm when you want to be warm, cool when you want to be cool. It's the kind of thing that if you get a nice one, you wear a suit and tie with it and go to a cool restaurant and you're going to get in.” This might be pure genius or Lebowski-like fantasy, but in any event James Perse is actually making the damn thing. They should be available at Dead & Company shows this summer.

The whole band got nudie suits to feel extra country?

So it's not a Sears poncho.

DaBreeze between two bozos.

Not sure what happened to Jerry's nudie suit or the others. Phil still has his, and I think Keith's might have been on display at one point at the rrhof?

The nudie strap belonged to rudson shurtliff and was sold at Bonham's in 2007. Unsure of gavel price or buyer, but I hope it ends up strapped back onto alligator at some point. Pre auction estimate at the time was $20K.

New Riders had nudies too (as seen on cover of Cactus Juice). Never seen or heard of those since.

And let's not forget our leader once wore this adorkable outfit.

In '99 Phil was still bringing that special je ne sais quoi. Like a dad who went out to cut his lawn in early fall. It's perfect.

Also when Gordon was still dressing like Mike Gordon. His transformation has been even more marked than Phil's, although that is another topic altogether.

Dunno who was in the Barney suit, but Phil was backstage making the actual bass sounds with his bass.

Well, that's kind of disappointing :-(

Yes FOM, it was Mexico and John Mayer, not his daughters, that got Weir started on the ponchos.

Weir does still have his Nudie suit; don't know what happened to Garcia's, but I do know a lot of his cool

60's clothes were stolen back then....

Mike, that looks like Jerry in red in Buffalo...

I believe you're correct, Local. Not my pic though. Just an intenet grab.

Be that as it may, I do recall an interview sometime over the past several years where he mentioned his wife / daughters either wanting to get involved or actually doing so with his wardrobe.

I've always enjoyed the crease in Phil's jeans in this shot I took at the Greek in '81.

A gentleman's jeans...

A perennial favorite.

John Mayer's fashion choice  for the Grammy's was pretty good. He must've gotten some help in that department..

Blazer sleeves scrunched up looks cheezy af.

Compared to the women doing a literal strip tease act and 'futuristic' sleaze that just aired, he was downright suave.  And well, I'm glad he ditched the high tops and Fanny pack, so yeah I thought he looked and sounded quite good

Blue eyed soul woos all the boomers.

I liked the little Richard tribute by Bruno Mars more

Billy Strings won a Grammy earlier today, no idea what he was wearing - he's my current  musical 'crush' and is on fire.

Billy Strings at the Capitol Theater recorded last month is off the charts. He's embracing the GD catalog with gusto

Agreed.
