Zippy on cardboard box?

I was at a neighborhood picnic yesterday - there was a band playing Dylan, Young, Morrison, Cale, Eagles, etc. One guy had this box that he was playing - apparently had 2 strings inside, not visible. He was tapping, rubbing, and hitting it and getting some cool sounds out of it. Was about a foot tall - looked  a bit like a speaker cabinet. Anyone familiar?

From a Bay Area Perspective:

Without intentionally casting aspersions on the Family Band:
-Grahame Lesh: massively improved guitar skills and capable of leadership.  Singing voice still has less then stellar qualities but he's improving.
-Alex Koford: a great singer and a decent drummer - though not flashy or an engine ala Molo.  Pretty good intepreter of songs.
-Ross James:  can jam heavy-handedly and adds spice and excitement to things.  Singing is painful.  More of an intoner than a singer.  Nice guy though.
-Jason Crosby: crazy talented musician who runs circles around most others on Keys, Fiddle, Mandolin, even guitar.

The only thing really lacking here is a guitarist with wow-level chops ala Stu Allen, Scott Law, and several others.
But the band is still entertaining IMHO.

Alex Koford: a great singer, but as a drummer too loud/too forward without nuance. Loud doesn't equal giving the band structure and excitement.
Jason Crosby: Musician's musician. Really great.
Grahame Lesh indeed getting better. He's putting in the time, listening, improving.

It's a percussion instrument called a cajone.  Peruvian in origin.

^^^I misspelled cajon above^^^  / It also has the accent mark over the o!

Makes sense - cajon means box. Now I can look it up - thanks.

I guess that's what I"m looking for

Just how long do we have to put up with someone who is always "getting better"?  By his age Garcia was an international star.  The kid is as good as he's going to get, and as much as I can relate to Phil wanting to play with his son he's never going to be anything better than a B list musician.  If Phil wasn't his father no one would even be aware of him.

Google is not my friend

Please tell me when central park show(s) is/ are

Thanks in advance

Thom speaks the truth. Nice guy Graham but there's no there there.

It's this Wednesday, Jill.

Actually Graham's voice and guitar have gotten much better and he is still very young... He sounds great with Midnight North. I think for some of us Dead music done without a clear Garcia style guitar will just never sound right and that's more of a Phil conceptual issue. For me I just think big summer Centtal Park show big guitar player JK comes to mind or Warren
