Overlooked TXR gems

Forums:

With so many lineups that Phil's put together at TXR over the years,  it's easy to overlook performances due to the lack of big names and the similar rotating members that have been cycled through. Listening yesterday to the 3/14/14 flu show, I was reminded of the unique gems that are possible at TXR even with a seemingly tame lineup. Even though many of the shows as a whole,  are not exactly perfect, there's still flashes of creativity that stand out.

The Unbroken Chain and Girl From the North Country both dip into the creative magic, which I love.

The Within You Without you w/Casal and Somebody to Love with Nicki Bluhm singing and Phil backing are both very cool.

What are some others? Does anyone remember the date of the show Phil played Whats Going ON? with JGe singing?

For a lot of reasons I think many of the shows at TxR could be labeled "overlooked gems", but that's a great call on the flu show.

It was set up to be a full-on dud but right from the start it turned out to be a great, high-energy show, with Tom Hamilton in particular really stepping up and shredding with virtually no rehearsal.

A very cool vibe in the room that night as well, as the people who stuck around weren't expecting too much and just hanging out having a good time, and then quickly grooving harder & harder as the show went on.

The venue offered either a full refund or a $40 TxR gift card. I think the ticket was originally in the $50 - $60 range, but they sold turn-around tix at the door for $20, so lots of people took the refund and then bought the cheaper ticket.

I took the card and enjoyed quite a few refreshing beverages for a while after, and enjoyed the HELL out of the show.

There Was a Show in 2013? i forget the players But i saw This Wheel stream or youtube? - with String/s that was Phenominal ! of Course Taping Not Allowed.

This may or may not have been overlooked, it remains one of my favorite TXR shoes.

^Regarding the Frisell show, what was amazing to me was how long it took for this show to sell out.  This was happening around the same time that the "year shows" were selling out in a heartbeat.  Great show!

I wholeheartedly agree with the 03/14/14 show:  I was an all-around great show.

Great thread.

Well, I had the good fortune to visit T,XR in September 2016, got to shake Phil's hand and compliment him on his excellent venue, and enjoy a backyard patio show for only $25. The Line up that night featured Melvin Seals, Jason Crosby, Barry Sless, Stu Allen, John Molo and Phil. The first set was fun, but the 2nd set brought the juju!  I got the instant live recording and played it on my radio show last month. Below is an archival link to the show. The first hour features the Hoboken-based Demolition String Band, but if you wish, you can scroll directly to the 68 minute mark on the player for Phil Lesh & Friends 9/23/16 @ TXR:

Enjoy!

Oops, that's actually 9/25/16

I saw a very unsung bar gig at TXR that wasn't full on electric mayhem but seemed special to me.
It was a summer night when there was San Rafael Canal Zone Power Black-out.I walked in the door of the bar and it was dark.

Sitting in front of a crowd of about 30 people behind a stack of a hundred different candles
was John Kadlecik, with John Graboff (of the Cardinals) and Phil (who was playing an acoustic 6 string bass guitar.)

It was pristine quiet and remarkably amazing performance by an un-amplified trio.

The highlight of it was JK  doing Visions of Johanna.

With lyrics that actually made sense within the context of a black out:
"Ain't it just like the night to play tricks
When you're tryin' to be so quiet
We sit here stranded, though we're all doin' our best to deny it.."

And: "The ghost of 'lectricity howls in the bones of her face..."

Despite all the Bullshit opinions posted here against JK - on this night he was fantastic imho....
