Oteil & Friends

Forums:

It's pretty good  -- and affordable (15 0ne /25 both nights).

Lots of jazzy Allman Bros/Dead with a dash of gospel/funk. Not the same old Franklin's Tower cover band - more like a Phil and Friends "good" lineup. They sound rehearsed. Check it out.

Well done. A professional-grade ensemble. Oteil is very smooth, for lack of a better word, and exudes such a positive vibe. Jason Crosby is still surprisingly quick for an old guy; I was impressed with his playing. Drumming was excellent, considering they covered a lot of 2-drummer material. Guitars weren't overplaying each other or being overwhelming. Horn section also added complimentary backup vocals. All in all, it had that sum-is-greater-than-it's-parts sound that is rare for a "big band." I missed the first hour of tonight and I'm actually looking forward to catching the whole thing tomorrow.

They are a super group. Each artist in the band deserves their own praise .  I would be there in person tonight if it wasn't for Rickie Lee Jones playing closer to home. Also, Rickie is in limited supply compared to Friends of the Dead.

Next weekend in Miami.  If I was into traveling I would go but not to be right now.  I am doing Kimock's virtual lessons this weekend, four hours yesterday, back at it at noon my  time then wrap up tomorrow.  Yes my brains are being taxed to the max.
