omg i saw ms lauryn hill

Just recently listened to this Apple Music Podcast about the making of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Just a great deep dive into the album. The Marley family connection. The fact that when she first played it for Sony records they told her it was so bad that weren't going to release it and that she should instead do a duet with Celine Dion. They had to release some of the tracks to DJ's to play in the clubs which blew up, and that finally forced the record companies hand. Also crazy that she was one and done.

Great listen even if you aren't into her music.

She's a trippy lady. She is notorious for starting her shows ridiculously late, like two/three hours late, and at times doesn't show up at all, leaving the venues to have to cancel with the audience already seated. I've had to live that more than once.

She says she has to "align her artistic process". Others might just call it unprofessional.

She is a brilliant talent though.

Thank you so so much for sharing that nino.

It's funny when someone like Axl Rose does it he's a rockstar and when a woman does it she's an unprofessional.

I look forward to watching that

I think Axl Rose is an unprofessional asshole. And most people think Lauryn Hill is a rockstar.

I think ANY performer who decides at 7:00 to not show up for a 7:30 show, or shows up at 11:00 and goes on at 11:30 is unprofessional.

YMMV.

Spoiler alert if you are going to listen to the podcast but I know most won't. There are so many cool Easter eggs on that album.

The teacher taking roll call on one of the songs was Lauryn's High School teacher in NJ - Ras Baraka. He is the current mayor of Newark who was just recently arrested by ICE.

The album was partially recorded in the studio at Bob Marley's house in Jamaica that is now a museum. Lauryn's first born child's father is one of Bob Marley's sons. They stayed in the house during the recording and out back is a party area with fire pits where a guy named Georgie would make the fire light. About half the songs are with the same studio musicians who played on Bob Marley's albums.

Johh Legend was a junior in college in Philadelphia when they were recording the album. He also sang in a church choir in central  PA on weekends. One of the other people in the choir went to high school with Lauryn and asked him if he would like to go the NYC and watch Lauryn record her album. When he got there Lauryn asked him to play one of his songs and then invited him to play piano on one of the tracks. He got paid $500 and said he was the coolest guy on campus his senior year when the album came out.

Yea, Beardfest was amazing, I have been going for over 10 yrs now, Bob goes now too. Some of the music coming out of this fest is really good, these musicians grew it from a backyard gig to now over 4000 in the jersey Pine Barrens. Zack and Sam are in Ms Lauryn's band and now travel the world with her, so it was ( spilled) to some that she would be there with her band.

The music/bands that have evolved from this group are so good...one reason I stayed here and Bob now comes down every year. Another cool spot is Anchor Rock in AC...great local music play there ( check out Zoomst from NOLA ).

Glad you are enjoying our South jersey bands and festi's...Beardfest is magical :)

Ohhh, I forgot this , her driver locked the keys in their car...and 2 of my friends had to break into her car to get them...lol ( Only in the Pine Barrens ).

She lives in North Jersey when not performing...so they didn't stay in VIP cabin <3

I've known the photographer for about 45 years, used to trade GD tapes.  Lost touch in the 90's.

Lol I saw your perfect match hubby having a big meltdown at the end and I was like at least you're in your happy place lololol

lol...yup, you know those well :) ! So happy you are finding ALL the good music, These musicians are like family to me...they dubbed me Mama Lyn as i am always there and feeding them. For the 10 years i cared for Mom, they were my refuge !
