Nominations for Viva's 2nd Favorite Bass Player

Forums:

We all know who your favorite Bass player is but who is your second? What do ya got?

I nominate Tony Levin as the master of the motherfucker.

Here's the evidence: Peter Gabriel from Woodstock 94

Never established a pecking order, but I'll add...

Thundercat

My cat is named Thunder. He has huge paws and seems to like music. I bet he could play the bass.

Stanley Clarke FTW!

I'm not sure if I like Bootsy Collins as a bass player or a person more.

I've already told my wife and all my friends that when I die I want my tombstone to read "put Jack on"

I'm not sure if I like Bootsy Collins as a bass player or a person more.

I feel the same way about Catherine Popper.

I was at the Woodstock '94 thing with Tony Levin backing Peter Gabriel.
I was backstage after his set and in the dark on a trail to the stage I literally ran head first into him.
Got a chance to say hello and thanks!
His thunder fingers thing was insane.

How can we even discuss great bassists without mentioning BobZilla!IMG_3214.JPG

David Brown from the original Santana Band.

So many good players, but Jack with the Airplane was a true force of nature.

These days, Pete Sears is probably the best, in your face rock bass player that I see with any frequency.

In the last couple of weeks I was able to see Jack and Pete and Dave and Phil

back in the day Jack was always the best even though there is no zone or viva jack zone

Also just saw Dave schools blow my mind

dwve bob and Phil and Pete are in the on deck circle too laugh

bass is the most important instrument  I concur with lots of well-deserved recognition in this thread

Real tough!   Almost impossible.  I like many of the names submitted so far, especially Levin.  I would agree with them all so far. I think Paul McCartney doesnt get enough credit.

I always liked Trevor Bolden (RIP) from Bowies old bands.  here is a sample: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ti29EFLkw7E

the bass totally makes that song.

Jack Bruce had the voice and the chops!

A tough call to pick one who is #2.

BTW, Phil IS my favorite bass player and has been pretty much since I first saw him.

Especially since the question asks for "favorite" and not best or most talented, I'd probably have to say Mike Gordon is #2 for me, with Chris Squire, John Patitucci, John Doe and Mike Watt pulling up right behind.

Flea & Claypool

Victor Wooten

Larry Graham

Cliff Burton

Rocco Prestia

James Jamerson

Joe Dart from Vulfpeck

Ricky Keller

Oteil

I nominate Dave Burger.

Phil is my number one "two guy", and my number one "one guy" as well.

Paul McCartney and Jack were the most notable number "one guys" as far back as I can remember.

  Other memorable geezer life experiences

Jack Bruce in cream

noel Reading in the experience

it seems that they used to be a hell of a lot more power trios

 Stanley Clarke

Wooten

I meant Geezer Butler.

I'm not ashamed to love Sabbath.

Steve Harris

Captain Sensible.

>>>Geezer Butler

Learned to play bass listening to and copying his lines on Paranoid and this guy's work:

John Paul Jones.jpg

I listen to John Kahn a whole bunch.

Not one mention of Charlie Haden?

Good to see you posting, Ateix

Haden definitely deserves a mention.

Mike Gordon...just kidding it's Jack...

Joey Spampinato - NRBQ ... Check out Hail , Hail Rock and Roll and countless vids on YouTube .

>and this guy's work:

Zep II should the text book for anyone wanting to learn to play rock bass.  Particularly The Lemon Song and Ramble On.

Roger Waters

Pretty cool, Tom. I just haven't been able to get enough Charlie Haden over the last few weeks. I think that's probably the mule that kicked me back to the Zone, actually, was to mention how great that fucking guy was.

Saw another amazing bass player tonight, one William Parker... pedigree includes playing with Don Cherry, Cecil Taylor, Derek Bailey & John Zorn... studied under Wilbur Ware (Thelonius Monk, John Coltrane). And a great storyteller. Sixty minutes of pure improv.

Bob Csugie rocks if ya get the chance

Seen Cliff Burton live...wow!

Steve Adams (ALO)

Dave Schools

Tony Hall (TAB 1996 warfield)

Jorge Calderón is pretty rad.

Decent songwriter too

Jack Cassidy

Shelby Snow

Phil Lesh

Phil's my BFF (bassist for f'n forever). Tal Wilkenfeld is my new fave.

Tal w/ Jeff Beck at like the age of 13: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXv54DfJ3bI

Here's a shot of Tal that I took at Portland's Aladdin Theater last year.

Nice selection of bass players... It must be wild to play an instrument that moves through people.

Enjoying the pictures in this thread, good work.

((((Earth Resonator))))

My favorite bass player is Billy Bass Nelson.  He got thae pocket on lock down. Philis second.

John Wetton! I know Asia was cheese wiz, but Wetton with King Crimson in '74 was the schnizzel!

Good to hear that you are still getting out and enjoying live music, Ateix.

Probably should mention the most recorded jazz bassist

rsz_img_20170408_145859.jpg Ron Carter

A buddy of mine is a big fan of Robert DeLeo

Mike Rutherford: THE most unrated bass player in rock.

^

THIS guy may be one of the most unsung bass players (check out "All Along The Watchtower", for one)

Hendrixbass.jpg

I hafta go w/Jobba the Schools - obviously not as "Talented" as many/most of the players listed above, but the fact that he plays in an Improvisational/Jam Band (which most of the above listed players dont) and several side projects, plays with Jimmy Herring, and has given me soooo many "beyond the pale" moments, he gets my vote.
