Thom ~ Basically every touring musician leave their equipment in a van, trailer, bus, car, semi, etc. overnight when they don't sleep in a vehicle. Nils is on solo tour and he did just that.
Steve Morse from the Dixie Dregs's prized custom Buscarino electric acoustic guitar, that he's been playing for 30 years, was stolen in Washington DC 3/10.
I saw him 5 days later to give him a little love when he played its sister.
Tony, I understand that a lot of equipment has to be left in whatever is transporting it, but if you have guitars that you value (as opposed to something you're just using for the road) I'd take the time to carry them inside.
I've noticed Bobby outside with an acoustic in his hand (in the case) when going to and fro tour bus or what not ... although just taking an acoustic along is a bit different than lugging around one's full compliment of guitars.
SF: do you bring your skis into your hotel room, or leave them in / locked to the vehicle if you're traveling?
One of instruments taken was a full sized sit down harp. Not exactly the thing you carry into a room.
lugging around one's full compliment of guitars.
And that is probably the crux of leaving them on the van. I just checked out a photo of a Nil's duet show and there were 11 guitars on stage and a few at tech's bench. I guess one could in that situation rent a room for the equipment.
There was a Grand Junction band who had all of their gear stolen a couple of years ago in Houston ... ran off with the trailer.
As much as a guitar is more "personal", in many cases it'd be a way bigger PITA (if not expense) to replace a pedal board ... which might be the "one thing" I'd bring inside.
(Unless you say otherwise, we'll assume you bring your skis inside)
Is Nils' harp solo piss break or not-to-be-missed material?
Neither. He performs some songs entirely on harp, so not a solo, per se.
(Unless you say otherwise, we'll assume you bring your skis inside)
Not sure why that is germane to the topic, but the answer is it depends. If I am staying at a resort for a few days, normally I will be staying at a place that has ski lock up or in sometimes the resort itself has a ski lock up. Often I will be dropping them off after a day at a shop for a tune/wax. If I am on the road traveling, they usually stay in the car. On rare occasions I bring them into a road room.
Since the instruments are Nil's tools of the trade, a more equivalent question would be; do I bring my camera gear into my room. Yes I do mainly because cameras can be finicky partners in crime. Too cold or too hot messes with any number of systems.
Not sure why that is germane to the topic, but the answer is it depends.<<<
Not looking to diminish the aspect of "putting bread on the table"; however, when it comes down to it, why wouldn't an amateur have the same impetus to retain one's "possessions"?
Nonetheless, it appears that you normally leave your ski gear under trusted supervision & probably wouldn't leave your skiis in your vehicle overnight in some parts of downtown SLC.
I wouldn't leave guitars overnight under freezing conditions for similar reasons as your camera gear ... and probably wouldn't want to make a habit of doing so with tube amps either, but theft is just as high a consideration. If extreme cold temps aren't an issue (just don't know), I'd probably take my chances with my Fender Twin and leave it outside ... unless I had a roadie to do so for me.
The thieves can't really be all that bright. Probably very difficult to pawn custom guitars and a full-size Harp without attracting some attention.
I see that the guitars were Takamine acoustics and a Fender Strat. Probably every Texas pawn shop & music store has photos by now.
>>>wouldn't leave your skiis in your vehicle overnight in some parts of downtown SLC
Some parts? Try all parts. And in the residential neighborhoods.
Sorry Tony, made the mistake of commenting without reading the article. Over 11 guitars and a harp is a bit different than 2-3 guitars
But as cautious as I am over my HD-28, 11 valuable guitars and a harp would certainly warrant some extraordinary measures taking them on the road if it were me.

I don't want to say serves you right but that's just basic. I won't leave a guitar in a car anywhere at anytime.
Hope he gets them back.

Two minutes of effort prevents a lot of headaches, heartaches, and bullshit.
