News websites that make you subscribe to see

Forums:

I’ve been thinking about the conversation regarding the death of newspapers (and I’ll add - yellow pages, phone books in general) and the shift to electronic media. Never been a newspaper reader since the internet, except for hyper local content. I’m wondering how the zone feels about/deals with these sites that make you either subscribe, or pay a use fee, or even enter minimal personal information or answering a survey to continue reading?

If it’s something I really want to read, there is usually a way. But in general, I just click the back button. Obviously this is intended to augment and replace daily paper subscriptions, but does it ask too much?

I was just bitching about this on another thread like a month ago. I fucking hate the pay to see websites. Like advertisement doesn't raise enough money? Really? There's so many free news sources on the internet that it seems stupid and uncompetitive to me, but hey, the New York Times is still afloat, so what do I know?

What I find interesting is how $ for access to major newspapers influences how well the populace is informed.

If it's the case that we're currently waiting for the populace to "catch up" in terms a larger majority learning about all the circumstances to favor impeachment, then could it be argued that restrictive for-profit newspapers in a capitalistic framework are an obstacle to a well informed and healthy Republic?

incognito or private mode until very recently used to allow you to read paywalled sites. often times it still does. ive recently noticed that certain sites (NYT WAPO) notice when you are incognito mode now. sometimes I have found a way around that as well by clicking on their offer and refreshing but it’s becoming more difficult.

if it’s a site that wants me to disable my ad-blocker I just move on.

i also go to a site that often offers alternatives to the paywalled site stories: https://www.memeorandum.com/

yes it could but I think you’ll want to go into the way back machine to the Reagan era when he killed the FCC fairness doctrine. You can read all bout it here (IF YOU CAN GET AROUND THE LA TIMES FIRE WALL!) https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1987-06-21-mn-8908-story.html

having our news media funded entirely by manipulative and invasive algorithms and spying techniques is straight up dystopian. we have been conditioned to expect everything for free online, but nothing is free...you are giving the currency of your data. nobody speaks to this better than jaron lanier. zoners should be accepting of his message since he is a total wook.

wait, what? we used to pay to buy the newspaper but don't want to drop the subscription and still get the news for free? Capitalism, how will the news agencies pay to run the site. Come on people lets be logical here. I still get the NY Times delivered everyday, wake up right at my door by 5:00 drink coffee, love the feel of news print and ink

Technology etc has certainly affected things.

However the quality has deteriorated.

Basic writing skills would be nice in many cases.

Sold internet advertising for SF Gate and the Bay Guardian for many years. Internet advertising in no way pays for even a tiny portion of the cost of putting out the news. Google and Facebook reach so many people which has allowed them to drive the cost down to almost nothing. That works for the giants but if you are a local newspaper you can't compete with that and you don't have the scale to make back your costs never mind make a profit. With all the targeting they do now you can reach your target audience on Joe's Blog no need to advertise on a newspaper site

NYT & WaPo are in one bucket (I don't pay them) and local newspapers are another story. They are the only people who keep an eye on local politicos & business and their ad revenue has hit the shits. I subscribe to 2 local Husdon Valley papers just to help keep them going.

I'll be in Kingston Columbus Day weekend, hope the weather holds. My sister lives in Poughkeepsie and when I lived in Highland for a Summer read the P Journal, it was pretty good but that was in the mid 70's
