Checked it out 2 nights ago and thought it was great- especially the Ruth Underwood and Bunk Gardner interviews. ---- Great family footage and photos of the early years also.-- I only wish I could have seen the original Mothers live back in the day.

Thanks for the reply K.  I look forward to seeing it.

Trivia fact: We have a statue of Frank in Baltimore. (He was born here.)

We rented it and enjoyed it.

I'd say it compliments the other documentaries out there and showcases his devotion to musical composition.

I loved the shots of his tape vault (incl "Jamming With Clapton in Basement") and the footage of a young Gail (wife to be) humanizes her a bit.

Quite excellent, although it's impossible to truly cover every aspect of his catalog. Nice footage of the'71 Mothers. They spend a decent amount of time on his neo-classical compositions as well.

Recommended.

I watched it last night on Amazon Prime, some pretty good stuff. I liked how they highlighted his interest in composing classical music. Ruth Underwood had some nice thoughts about Frank, she was able to put his work into perspective. Especially liked her playing The Black Page on the piano, I just wish it wasn't interrupted by useless dialogue while she was playing. Early Mothers stuff was good too, the film covered most of the bases. My only issue is some of the content was a duplicate of the 'Eat That Question' movie. But 'Zappa' was the better movie.

Waiting for the right time. It'll happen closer to holiday.

Frank went in a different musical direction after his Warner Brothers fucking. His most interesting musical phase, but it didn't last near long enough. Then he went full cynical asshole,  tooooo much bs,  took less musical chances, therefore less interesting to me. If he had stayed more the Mothers course, mixing classical with rock he might have made a bigger impact.

Stuff like Rats - Waka - Wazoo - B Weenie Sandwich - Lather

>took less musical chances<

Idk, seems to me that he tool some chances with Jazz from hell,  fz meets mothers of prevention, civilization phase 3

Love all that stuff but its not that killer good ol shit.  Synclavier ?? WTF even is that thing ? It sure aint Ian Underwood

Agreed, but you cannot say that he stopped taking chances, or even took less chances. The synclavier probably alienated more of his fan base than some of the other chances he took
