We have reached the Patrick Bateman moment in our culture....

I want to write that I did not care for HL&N but I'm afraid you would fuckin bark at me and tell me I don't know fuck about music and that my opinion sucks.

Since I've never done that I can only assume that you are having a bad drug experience.  I hope you feel better soon.

And I actually like their music.

hopefully they address how when he plays harmonica no sound seems to come out

That band was tight as hell when I saw them on the Pier w/ Squeeze.

They played the hits early.  The yuppies left satisfied.  Then they jammed their asses off.

Cool light show by Mother Nature.

Full disclosure:  This was before Stuck On You.

Ain't no defending that.

We are doomed.

there are dumber musicals.  didn't they turn a bunch of trey's solo songs into a play about a raffle or something?

"culture is not your friend"

Tougher than diamonds, rich like cream
Stronger and harder than a bad girl's dream

i think i saw a couple HL cds in that thread

lol

makes me hate harmonicas and white "blues"...

Jersey Boys

One of the all time greats

Close.  One of those "last one with a hand on the truck wins it" deals.

My daughter is a theater kid, a HS senior doing an internship at a well respected off-Broadway developmental theater company and looking to make a career as a stage manager. We saw a commercial for the Jimmy Buffet musical the other night, and she about flipped out. 'Why are there "concert" musicals filling up Broadway theaters when there is so much good out there being written that never sees the light of day??", she wailed.

My answer of course is that theater producers are averse to risk. A Broadway  production is incredibly expensive to put on, and if something has a built in audience, it is more likely to succeed. Blame Mama Mia (the ABBA musical), Jersey Boys (the Frankie Valli musical), etc. That, and Disney shows. Don't get me started on the tourist business that drives the Broadway economy.

cool

>>Jersey Boys (the Frankie Valli musical)

which is actually a decent show,  worked this one a ton.

seems a little hypocritical if that's the direction she's headed?

Hypocritical, perhaps. But Broadway wasn't always this way. There was a thriving NY theater economy that existed on it's own, and didn't dumb everything down to play to the out of towners. But that is what Broadway has become. There used to be a lot more original work being done on the boards. It's a shame that no longer is the case.

understood

good luck to her!

Saw the Janice musical it wasn't horrible and I got a chance to dress up as Pigpen

it's sort of scratched an itch

"There was a thriving NY theater economy that existed on it's own"

This was kind of what I was getting at with this thread; musical used to exist on their own and had great music composed for them by great lyricists and songwriters.  Now it's a rehash of music that was made decades ago with a this veil of a story created to somehow tie the songs together into (supposedly) cohesive thread.  Mama Mia is a great example.

You guys aren't making sense.

If no one likes your art, try again.

Search Howard Stern's "Fox News, the Musical". It's a couple of ad libbed segments and 1 produced piece. It's a perfect parody of everything that sucks about Broadway.

What's your point, Chad?

Thom and I agree. Play the lottery, watch out for rainbows, and unicorns are on the rise.

And Jonas, I'm afraid to run that search.

New York is a big town. If you know of a better show, mention it.

If New Yorkers don't support better musicals, don't blame tourists for buying tickets so artists can art.

Chad, you really are out of your element. A Broadway production is a HUGE investment. Millions of $$. The investors will not take the risk to produce a show without some guaranteed revenue, so they put out Huey Lewis: The Musical, rather than something written from new material. It's not about artists ARTING, it's about investors (executive producers) and their ROI.

For the record, I'm actually considering the Jimmy Buffett musical. The main character is Tully Mars, from Buffett's very entertaining novels. I think he's a long form story teller who could actually write a decent musical.

hopefully they address how when he plays harmonica no sound seems to come out<<<

He sat in with Ratdog for the entire 2nd set in Missoula in '09 ... huey wasn't bad, but great set
