Although just starting in NY, venues seem to be backing it and state governments are listening. Before entering a venue for sports/music/dance/theater, one must provided valid photo ID which will be scanned into a database.
I could care less but I imaging any number of people will balk at this.

It all seems so harmless and all. Just give them your license, just give up your info, just let them tbe able to track you, etc. It's for your safety, right?
But akin to post 9/11, it's increasingly difficult to claw back civil liberties, once they are taken away. Our bloated corporate government regimes will keep taking and taking, regardless of whether it really helps our collective society. We should all be very concerned with many of these types of measures, no matter how innocently they ware wrapped and packaged.

I guess the real test will be as attendance limits starts going up. I would have to think that getting 20k plus into a venue with photo ID scanning, temp checks etc will take time. One might have to show up at an event 2 hours or more before showtime.

Why not rely more on facial recognition if that's the way things are moving anyhow?

What is the impetus for doing
I imagine the photo ID scan is to provide protection to the venue from suits. If they have a photo ID with the person's address on it, contact tracing would be easier. While governments may have access to facial databases with information like an address, I'm sure that stuff isn't available to a commercial concern.

Data is a huge commodity. It's that simple. You go to a Phil and friends show, they scan your ID, and the next morning your phone has ads for ED medication.

They do this in Sacramento
They do this in Sacramento pretty much anywhere there is a doorman. The scan companies are private and yes they sell your data, and if you get kicked out of one bar you go into the data base and are kicked out of every venue that uses that companies system so could be across the whole country. No review and they share the data with law enforcement anytime they want. It's totaly fucked.

I wonder how long it'll take before it is available for a commercial application? Perhaps the prevalence of photo ID scan in a wider spectrum of situations might serve as a grassroots building block to this end. When dispensaries started scanning ID's I was opposed, but eventually caved in and now comply. I can only imagine how such data is being used.

They are requiring name and phone number in Summit County (Breck) restaurants. It's simply for contact tracing if a cluster of infections arises.
Facial recognition in every venue, restaurant, retail store etc would be extremely costly. This is not.

There's really no Live Music
There's really no Live Music coming around anytime soon here, and all touring bands worth seeing are retired or on Hiatus.
I would attend Delfest again when that happens, but Lock'n is just too big.
Certainly not going to give a retina scan or anal swab to check out a Hockey game. OK, it's part of "The New Freedom" and you are welcome, but I'm out.

If you bought the tickets
If you bought the tickets with a debit card then you already have a trail that leads you to the event. If you have a phone that's on then you can be traced there in like 10 seconds, anyways. I think if they scanned your phone or something like that it could be better just because they already do have access to that information. Not sure if "scanning" means they are taking a picture of your license or what but it's has all the information needed to have your identity stolen which is bad. I wouldn't want to give my SS# to a venue, tbh.

I'd be curious to know how much it actually costs now and how long it'd be before it's more accessible to your average restaurant? While ID's might be a pragmatic solution for the pandemic in the here and now, I suspect facial recognition isn't really all that far off in terms of being "mainstreamed".
