NEJM Assessment of Covid-19 Response and Leadership

Forums:

The New England Journal of Medicine issued an editorial today signed by 34 of its editors, in which they assess government response to the Covid-19 pandemic. I'd rather not rely on a trite phrase like "scathing indictment" to describe this writing, but that's precisely what it is.

I'll post the first and last paragraphs here, but I encourage folks to read the whole thing; it's just under 1200 words, so it should only take about 10-15 minutes to read.

Dying in a Leadership Vacuum

Covid-19 has created a crisis throughout the world. This crisis has produced a test of leadership. With no good options to combat a novel pathogen, countries were forced to make hard choices about how to respond. Here in the United States, our leaders have failed that test. They have taken a crisis and turned it into a tragedy.

...

Anyone else who recklessly squandered lives and money in this way would be suffering legal consequences. Our leaders have largely claimed immunity for their actions. But this election gives us the power to render judgment. Reasonable people will certainly disagree about the many political positions taken by candidates. But truth is neither liberal nor conservative. When it comes to the response to the largest public health crisis of our time, our current political leaders have demonstrated that they are dangerously incompetent. We should not abet them and enable the deaths of thousands more Americans by allowing them to keep their jobs.

Good for them ... spot on analysis IMHO

Hopefully Kamalala's debate coach is aware of this report and is working it in to her talking points!

The firemen are here are misting my office now.

Perfect time to read the article.

Leadership,  total failure.

He gave himself an A+.........I'm confused

What exactly could the "leaders" have done? And since the states are the ones who imposed the shutdown then why didn't the governors do it sooner, if that's what they thought should have been done? Do they not have to take any blame? How about the CDC? They didn't really get involved in anything until it had already started to spread in NYC. How about the WHO? Trump can't be a scapegoat for al of these organizations who fucked up as well. Maybe collectively as a human race we should all take some responsibility. We all fucked up and we can all do better.

> What exactly could the "leaders" have done?

"Countries...such as Singapore and South Korea, began intensive testing early, along with aggressive contact tracing and appropriate isolation, and have had relatively small outbreaks."

We did none of that, Timpane, and that's a big part of the failure of leadership in the US. There's no mention of Sweden in the article though as an example of what how to manage Covid.

So why does the USA get such special treatment? What about other countries that fucked up? Why didn't states and municipalities put forth an effort to test as well? This is a union but no one worked together so we are all to blame.

We still don't have adequate testing, the White House refuses to contact trace the Rose Garden ACB event, and we reopened many places much too soon. A lot of these problems are because our Union doesn't have a unified approach to the problem of Covid-19 and that's on Trump. He had an opportunity to lead and he failed, miserably and repeatedly.

We all failed. Take some responsibility. On top of that, stop trying to act like you have a good plan for reopening. There isn't one and there are millions of people out of work. Step up and have some integrity. Look to your left and look to your right. That is the union, not the president

Timpy, the failure by the Trump admin was to politicize an apolitical pandemic. Remember Trump tweeting "Liberate Michigan"?

Leadership is an art as much as a practice.

Timpane, you're still a mess. I'm starting to think you must be a bath salt freak.

I'm equally concerned, Mike.

even i'm getting worried...

Timpy

i laugh at your posts

thanks!

...no worries, it's all "Totally Under Control"

> Remember Trump tweeting "Liberate Michigan"?

Remember the time that crazy talk inspired some fuck whads plot to kidnap the governor of Michigan....

But sure,,,good people on both sides..

> "Totally Under Control"

Alex Gibney with an October surprise; nice. I'm actually starting to feel a little hopeful about things turning around.

Sounds like you guys just need someone to blame to make yourselves feel better about how fucked up our country is. In reality we are all to blame. The country has always struggled with the same issues and everyone just likes to point the finger instead of accepting responsibility. Own up to your own actions and maybe you can make a difference.

I have no idea what "liberate Michigan" is and it's besides the point. The WHO fucked up. CDC fucked up. China fucked up. So did each and every governor and state in our country. Own up to it. We all fucked up. It's an issue with humanity. It's not just one guys fault. Trump is the result of a broken democracy run by a corrupt republic. What are you doing to fix anything besides going on social media and copying and pasting?

When Kennedy was president black Americans still couldn't vote. You can keep acting like all of this started with dumbass 45 but it didn't. This is our country. It's our problem so own it or STFU

I have no idea what "liberate Michigan" is

No surprise there.

whimpy timpy - thanks for the laugh

keep them hits comin >>>don't STFU

Is his phone still broken?

JFK was completely responsible for black Americans not being able to vote when he was president right? Poor leadership. Gw Bush 100% responsible for 9/11.

just using the logic of privileged folks who don't accept responsibility for any problems with humanity.

> Is his phone still broken?

That broken phone has become a metaphor for so much more, and yeah, it's still busted, I'd say, and might be beyond repair.

Mike Edwards found a picture of the phone I had in high school and posted it in the other thread. Great zoning

Muchos garcias. Or should it be muchas?

timpane, there were a lot of people/government officeholders/institutions/organizations who could have done better. The very huge thing we can hold Trump responsible for is that he created a false sense of security for 100,000's of people who bought that they didn't need to be concerned about Covid-19, didn't need to try to protect themselves or others, that it didn't matter. He had the ears of all of those people and let them walk (run) into danger when he could have given them real and better info. Any delays in keeping people safe, whether by wearing masks, testing, distancing, all of it, can be laid at his feet. Whether you know any or not, there are people who trust him. They trust him! His "base". So many deaths or people with "longhauler" symptoms and organ destruction, not just among that group of deluded individuals but so many people they came in contact with.

As unbelievable as it is, people looked to him for guidance and didn't get good, accurate advice. Okay, I could go on, but really...

^For some reason that post was really hard to read not being double spaced.

We all know trump has fucked up. Everyone now saying "I didn't fuck up, it's trumps fault." They won't be able to say that if he loses this election though. They will have to actually own up to their own mistakes.

For now, they still have some months left to ride that train.

once he's gone who will everyone blame for all the issues in the country?

We're less than a month from the election, and this is when the political chickens come home to roost. It's time for Trump to be held accountable, and that's what this thread, and others like it, are really all about. Also, assigning responsibility to another is not necessarily shirking it for oneself. But this is the time when Trump gets held to account, and it'll be our responsibility to chart a new course, and work towards it, once he's out of office.

Trump is the President of the United States. He's a leader by definition--if not in practice--and it's his job to set national policies and to implement them, and he's failed at that and people of died as a result of his failure. He's a negligent narcissist who only looks out for himself, and after four years of seeing the pain and suffering he's unnecessarily created, those who oppose him are focusing our efforts on his removal from office at the ballot box.

That's why we're seeing individuals and organizations like the NEJM, the New York Times with it's recent investigative work into Trump's taxes, and Alex Gibney putting out a new documentary about how Trump bungled the pandemic, bringing their forces to bear for this unified goal. Hold Trump accountable and vote him out of office. That's the American way, and if you can't understand that, Timpane, maybe you'd have a better time of it in Sweden.

timpane, I can copy and paste in a double-spaced format if it would help.

But the real take away is HE LIED and exerted power based on the lies. That caused uncountable hardship and all too countable illness and death.

The NEJM did nothing either. Who did they help? And aren't all presidents narcissists? Most humans now thrive off of narcissism in Facebook and Twitter. As a whole we are all to blame. Why do we think that pointing a finger at someone and dis regarding our own responsibility is helping anything? Who knows who and how contracted and spread the virus? It's all projection and stipulation.

That's our issue as a humanity to figure out. Many people died under Obama's presidency as well. A lot of them were people who were drone bombed in Syria, Lybia and other places in the Middle East and others were US soldiers who died in a meaningless war. All of these people are false idols. Politicians are only in it for the republic and not the people so it is up to us to strengthen the Union not the politicians.

I will be the first to admit that I play a part in an utterly failed humanity which is problematic and if I didn't treat th one who I crossed paths with today with love and respect then tomorrow I have a lot of work to do.

you are accountable, for not holding him accountable  -or is that roo confusing for you as well?
