Neil Young Reverses 2020 Tour Stance, Planning Crazy Horse Trek

Less than a week after telling fans to “not expect anything” regarding future concerts, Neil Young has announced plans to take Crazy Horse on a tour across America. There are no dates yet, but the tour will hit vintage arenas and bypass newer ones completely.

Who's gonna be the second guitar player? Guesses anyone?

lance - any ideas on potential bay area venues that seem like likely fits based on neils statement from the article about wanting to play old arenas instead of new or drastically renovated sports arenas? probably oakland arena?

Oakland Arena

Greek Theatre

- or God forbid -

the Cow Palace

I think the Cow Palace would be awesome.

The Greek would be best, BG Civic may be most likely.

No matter, if this show comes anywhere near me I'll be there.

And I think Nils Lofgren would probably be the other guitar player, and that works fine.

Go Neil!

Nils is rumored to being committed to a Bruce tour, don't think he turns that down as it's 1-2 yrs of work vs a few months with Neil

Bruce canceled his proposed tour. His mother is ill and his daughter is vying for a spot in th Olympics. Nils is in for the Horse.

Tom, I was that '86 show at the Cow Palace, that was a hoot! BGCC would be fine for the Horse.....

I am checking with Bruce insiders for confirmation , if you are correct love CH with nils

just confirmed Bruce not touring , bring on the horse

Cow Palace would be great. Get Foghat to open.

1991 MSG

social distortion, sonic youth , NYCH but it wasn't LOUD , lol

This could very well be worth traveling to.

Giddy-up!

A couple of things to keep in mind about a CH tour...

The shows will be expensive. Neil may be a man of the people, but he most often demonstrates that by taking as much of the people's money as he can (he is an American after all).

The shows will likely be on the short side, probably an hour & a half at most, and sometimes less.

Those shows they did a couple of years ago in Fresno & Bakersfield did not go very long, especially the 3rd night in Fresno (googly wasn't pleased) and I'd expect the same on a tour.

And didn't the shows they did in Canada a while back start with a few Neil solo acoustic songs?

I like Neil solo acoustic, but not at the expense of rip-roaring Crazy Horse rock 'n roll.

I hope he doesn't do that again.

Still, I'm VERY happy to see this announcement, especially at this late stage. I'm not a big fan of Neil with the Willie Family Band. They're the least of any backing band I've seen with Neil, but then even when he was playing with Booker T., Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn & Jim Keltner I was still wishing for Crazy Horse.

Neil with Crazy Horse has a raw sound all it's own, and only Neil takes the solos in that band, which is the way it should be.

I'm looking forward to hearing that sound again.

The best

Raw is the word, that's what makes me happy.

Lance, question: would you say that Crazy Horse (or, more to a point, NY) is (are) a(n) "improvisatory" act?

I only ask because I know you distinguish between the being and the not being, and you mentioned that in CH, only Neil takes the solos - and so (to me), it begs the question.

And, if so: how?

The last time Neil did an arena tour with Crazy Horse, I saw him with Los Lobos opening at the Key Arena in Seattle, about ten years ago.  Tickets were GA and not too pricey.   He said in his post that part of why he doesn't want to play the new arenas is that they are too expensive.  Maybe he's trying to hold expenses down.

I would think that a proper NYCH tour would hit the 2 hour mark. That's  about  how long he plays with POTR. Those Fresno and other one off theatre shows were billed more as rehearsals and to some extent just to see if they could still do it.

I agree it will likely be pricey though!

The Frost Ampitheatre is the correct answer.

Dan for the win!

Ahhhh yes I remember fondly that summer. That was the year of the Holy Trinity,,  the hottest shows ever at the Meadows in Hartford ---

NY + CH  --  The Allman Brothers Band  ---  Santana

Every one a soul lifting scorcher

Yeah, I think the Frost has a chance, but IMO that place is way too mellow (and sound restricted) for the horse. Personally for BA shows I'd pick the Greek as first choice, then the Cow Palace (for nostalgia and because that place can really CRANK the volume and overall fits that band's mojo) then the Civic.

Ultimately, given his history I just hope he plays the Bay Area at all.

And Ateix, I'm no expert on musical definitions, but I'm not sure I'd give Neil & Crazy Horse the "improvisational" label. I do think they can & do stretch out on certain songs, sometimes way out, and while being a very rehearsed group they definitely don't play exactly the same notes all the time. (I've been lucky to have been a fly on the wall for a few Crazy Horse rehearsals over the years and it's kind of amazing how in certain ways Neil wants/demands everything to be JUST EXACTLY PERFECT, and in the same breath he still wants it very loose & in the moment. I don't think it's easy to be in a Neil Young band.)

At least for me, in rock music it's hard to specifically define the difference between improv or jamming. I'd say Neil & CH jam more than they truly improvise, but I think Neil always plays his solos from the hip and that Neil and Crazy Horse can really take a song like Cortez, Down By the River, Hurricane and others waaaay out there.

And for me that's always the best part of their shows.

I appreciate the response, Lance. Completely onboard, sans the fly-on-the-rehearsal-wall bragging rights.

That's just awesome.

...I love those songs

right on  on the In the moment wild and rehearsed in the same breath

The Booker T and duck Dunn  band at Oakland Coliseum s long long time ago and probably crazy horse at the Warfield long ago were as good as it gets

Until I remembered Crazyhorse on a Tuesday night at that little place in La Honda that burned down long long long time ago

I LOVE THE  BARD OF LA HONDA

Rolling Stone is reporting the tour MAY be delayed or cancelled do the coronavirus. Neal fearing  for the health of concert goers

Obviously that should read due to.. hate auto correct

SWEET !

.........

I'm hoping they're considering Mac Court on the U of O campus. Probably not.

Surprise tour opener show at the Santa Cruz Civic. Calling it now.

Surprised Dylan hasn't cancelled his 3 week Japan tour in April. I think he's waiting it out to see what happens.

Wolf Bros tour kicks off tonight, stay safe Zoners.....

Some woman sneezed next to me at the supermarket today. I was slightly paranoid about it!

>>>Surprise tour opener show at the Santa Cruz Civic<<<

Neil doesn't live in the Bay Area anymore.

Santa Monica Civic maybe.

The Forum has been redone and does not have the funky old vibe. Play that Long Beach Arena Neil!

>>>> Cow Palace would be great. Get Foghat to open.

I saw Foghat's first show at the Cow Palace:

02/05/1977 Cow Palace - Foghat, Sammy Hagar, Rick Derringer

Great show, though Foghat was a little underwhelming after Derringer and Hagar with special guest Ronnie Montrose!

Turns out Foghat played Winterland a few times before this, and the Cow Palace a couple more times as well (I have a copy of the BGP database, a handy reference):

04/08/1978 Cow Palace - Foghat, Outlaws
04/14/1978 Cow Palace - Foghat, Eddie Money, No Dice

They also played a Day on the Green in '79, and the Oakland Auditorium in '80, which would've been interesting.

In yesterday's news Neil says the tour is back on - or at least being scheduled!

http://neilyoungnews.thrasherswheat.org/2020/02/neil-young-crazy-horse-t...

No way the Horse plays the Frost though, they are just too loud for that neighborhood. BGCC, the Cow Palace or Oakland Arena are the likely options.....

As per NYA today , the tour is booked but temporary on hold while they await advise if it's safe health wise to go out . Looking out for both the fans well being and none of the band are spring chickens

Old Princeton Landing in HMB has that outdoor space now...

So today's NYA letters page Neil states the tour is on and Europe is included. Also back to one of my original questions, when asked he said when Nils has to rejoin E Street he has a plan . Any ideas for second guitar?

I thought the sound in the Cow Palace was questionable?

I hope they do BG Civic and Long Beach Arena.

Bring on the tour!

As stated above no announcement until Neil thinks is safe for all involved health wise. I joined NYA just to get first access to MSG seats

>>>I thought the sound in the Cow Palace was questionable<<<

I think depending on an individual's personal taste as well as the sound system and the people using it just about any venue can have questionable sound.

The Cow Palace is really wide and my recollections are that there were some slapback issues because of the flat wall at the back, but most shows there happened in the '70s & '80s; I think the PAs used nowadays are much better at dialing in sound in most any building, so I'd be expecting it to sound OK in that old dump, and most certainly LOUD, which when it comes to Neil & Crazy Horse is my personal taste.

The Civic or other smaller venues would be fine (and maybe more realistic for that band's potential draw in 2020) but the Cow Palace would be fun because of it's long history and because IMO it's perfect for Neil & Crazy Horse. They are the ultimate garage band, and the Cow Palace is the ultimate garage.

In this era of huge, sterile luxury box venues the 79-year-old Cow Palace shouldn't exist. Like Neil & Crazy Horse it's a relic, and that's why it's cool.

Neil Young Unearths Rare 1971 “Cowgirl in the Sand” Clip

Neil Young has dug into his video archives, looking back on Jan. 21, 1971 with a newly released archival clip of “Cowgirl in the Sand.”

The performance took place at the Shakespeare Theater in Stratford, Conn. and it is a rare glimpse of Young’s After The Gold Rush era.

“This is a song I wrote about a dream I had,” the singer/guitarist says at the top of the performance . “It was snowing outside. It was the kind of show that sticks on your nose.”
