But, yea, kind of interesting moonscapes to see but in my view not really worth the trip unless you happen to be relatively near there for some other reason(s). Shit ton of rattlesnakes too.
The South Dakota Badlands is near the Black Hills which have Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse monuments, and are full of great places to camp. Wounded Knee is on the Southwest corner of the Badlands, and is worth the visit to take in the history and to see the Lakota tribe's homebase in Pine Ridge. It's an eye-opener about wealth-disparity in this country. On the west side of the Black Hills, you can easily get to Devil's Tower in a couple of hours. Plenty to see in that part of the country.
Look at you all just shootin' from the hip without so much as a google search. Dave knows what's up. The rest of you need to get in your car and see the land of the brave and free. After the pandemic, I mean...
I apologized for the thread vomit in the Nike thread, Ned. I'm not sure what happened there. Was just coming out of some solid dreaming and deep sleep. No one expects the morning derp.
Black Hills, Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse.and surrounding areas are surely noteworthy and historically relevant but, still, in my view, not really worth the trip unless you happen to be near there or have some burning desire to see those things. For better or worse, there is also a whole lotta jack shit in the vast surrounding void.
And if there was four thread called the NM, I might have started a spin-off thread called The NM Las Vegas. I know, my humor is pretty piss poor, but I'm doing what I can.
Yeah, but it would be all too easy for you. But I'm getting the feeling like you wanted to start the threads and held back. I say go for it, man. Throw the die, let's see what happens
In May 2008 I graduated Berea College. I had been married 6 years and had two kids and worked while getting my degree, and thankfully got a full ride from Berea. But I was toast. My last semester was 6 courses and hundreds of papers. Berea College was harder than graduate school I finished later on. I was so ready for a vacation and to get away that I took off with my son and headed to the Badlands in South Dakota. Beautiful. Big sky, open prairies, and finally this amazing carved up area.
It was so awesome I went a few years later when the kids were older.
The North Dakota Badlands are next on my list. I kinda was put off by the fracking drills near the park, but I'm considering going this Fall for a few days of R&R.
Nice! And Johnny D with the three pointer for 'Zoner who has actually BEEN there'! Very cool, man and very nice pics!
Lager, what's up man? Have you been zoning recently? I feel like I haven't seen you around in a while, but it's good to read from ya'. Did you do college older or have kids young? It's tough to study and have kids at the same time, for sure. That's cool that you went to the Badlands after all that to unwind.
Wouldn't mind setting for a peyote ceremony up in them thar hills some time, though I don't know how the local spirits or friends of them would feel about that. But they sure do seem to be some seriously sacred places...

There are "badlands" across the American West, including both the Dakotas:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Badlands
The Black Hills are in western South Dakota and eastern Wyoming and are set off from the South Dakota "Badlands":

Black Hills are a great place and way more than Mt. Rushmore, Deadwood, and Sturgis.

I've heard the Black Hills are powerful and beautiful - I would love to get there some day...
