Name callers and malcontents: incivility in our society (and zone)

Forums:

just a piece on civility from our high school. It seemed to fit with all the mud slinging we "enjoy" around these parts.

black or white/,there is very little grey left in our "trump era society" It appears that "we"  Americans elected him, so here we are warts and all

March 2017

Dear Friends,

In recent months, the complexity of our democracy has become startlingly obvious. As is our right, Americans are speaking out, expressing conflicting opinions about potential policy changes and their ramifications. I applaud the rising voices; it is the mark of our free society that we can speak uncensored and initiate change. I am, however, disheartened by what I perceive to be a rise in incivility.

On the surface, civility seems like a weak term; we don’t often associate social change with politeness and courtesy. But in fact, civility encompasses more than manners. It is the rulebook for the respectful interactions that are necessary to draw the best of ideas from all people in a community, an organization, a classroom. Civility creates a safe environment in which the most impassioned debates can occur, leading to deeper understanding and tolerance even when disagreement lingers. Civility builds relationships, and relationships can lead us to solutions that we could never reach in isolation.

Whether subtle or overt, incivility can be a destructive force in any organization or community. As educators, we of course know its impact on children and teens. When children feel unsafe, if they feel they may fall victim to teasing or ridicule, they try to hide. They withhold their most creative thoughts, falling short of fulfilling their potential as learners. What a loss, not only for those children but for our classrooms, community, and world, when ideas are left unshared because voices have been silenced by disrespect. With Internet personalities, television celebrities, and elected officials from both parties modeling incivility, our youth have too few examples of how to behave in a way that promotes empathy, compassion, cooperation, and progress in our world.

But we are making progress. Our district’s curricula have evolved beyond traditional basics in recent years, and now include lessons aimed at developing social competence, emotional wellness, mutual respect, collaboration, and cultural proficiency — terms never used by teachers only a few decades ago. They all add up to building a constructive environment for children — a safe space in which they can share their ideas without fear. Many are flourishing, demonstrating how brightly they can shine when their world is a safe one.

I have every confidence that these busy children (and zoners!) will become tomorrow’s leaders, creating a more just and civilized future for us all. It is a joy to watch them at work.

hate on

but politely

Do they have a hoodie Mafia at your High school, Joel?

frankly am tired of the shit, and will call it as i see it.

Thanks, LLTD.

As good a time for a reminder as any: RESPECT. CIVILITY. KEEP IT KIND.

Express it, but express it clearly and strongly without going beyond that. It can be done with civility. Argue the point, without shitting on the person making it. Keep it about the message, not the messenger.

It seems to be in the political threads that people lose their ability to argue a point without forgetting the precepts of Viva la Zone. Take it to the Politics Folder if you need to be disrespectful, uncivil, unkind, or Admin will.

nancy, perfect: as willie said "you were always on my mind".......  with respect, hoodie or not

I hate the shit too bud, and I am just sharing my view that some are quite predictable, and incessantly spew (and super annoying lol) auto filter....

outspoken, or speaking out????

Unfortunately, I feel that civility is now labelled "Political correctness" and is damned by a significant portion of the population.

Grandpa said people who can't be civil in public are just trash, with no manners.

Except for fascists. They should be beaten on sight.

While i do see Nancy engaging in a good bit of sparring i'd say the majority of the nasty name calling comes from the people that disagree with her, more often than not i agree 100% with what Nancy says so i find it natural to be civil and respectful dealing with her.. I find her viewpoints to be spot on, hows that for civil. You were always on my mind, great song.

Tooling on Nancy has been "in" for quite a while. Personally, I see a lot of it as sexism. People can't handle a politically outspoken woman, and seem to be threatened by the fact that she has something to say and actually says it.

I think the Nancy backlash has more to do with how she treats people, demonizing anyone she disagrees with and using ad hominem attacks as a crutch when she has nothing because she is pretty bad at fact based debate.

This definitely reminds me of high school.

I generally dislike politically outspoken people, male or female. I find talking about politics to be the as boring as chatting about the weather. My ideas are mine, and if you disagree well then why waste my time trying to convince you otherwise. Believe what you want.  Going back and forth on an issue that neither side will ever see eye to eye on is just beating a dead horse, and to me, a waste of peoples intellectual capacity. It's bad enough that our government acts like petulant children on every issue that comes between them, do we have to mimic that ad nauseum? Flex your head.

Yeah, it's a bit tough when conspiracy theories are thrown around as facts. They are theories because they aren't facts. You're really talking about debating theories, which you ain't so hot at either.

>she is pretty bad at fact based debate.

that's hysterical coming from one of the biggest conspiracy theorists on this sites who links  bizarre and fake news stories about 911, Pizzagate, etc.

>This definitely reminds me of high school.

Actually the Hoodie Mafia is more Middle School. Or perhaps Kindergarten where the kids argue are learning share  and need  sit on those little carpet squares to define their territory.

The 911 theories are good maybe chemtrails, once you switched to the political viewpoint it went downhill fast..

Trendy gang moshing mentality is the norm here, Nanc seems to hold her own.

i absent myself from most discussions

cuz i still can't keep a lid on it

workin' on it

be back later

"black or white/,there is very little grey left in our "trump era society""

Yes, that's right.  This all started five months ago and is completely Donald Trump's fault.  No one on the left has ever disparaged a person that they don't agree with, and civility was the Golden Rule all during the Obama years. Oh how I long for those halcyon days gone by of peace and cooperation.

>>>>>>> The 911 theories are good maybe chemtrails

Let's not forget the faked moon landings, climate change, vaccines cause autism, evolution, the list goes on & on lol . . .

The first thing to consider when evaluating a conspiracy theory:  How many people would have to be "in" on it to pull it off?  If more than a dozen or so, someone would have spilled the beans by now, so, no, it's not true . . .

A conspiracy theory I believe in?  Fire retardants cause health issues.  Well not really a conspiracy theory 'cause the knowledge is out there but apparently nobody cares:

(this 2nd link is a supplement company so caveat emptor)

leftist. oh how i love to read that word. ha!

>>>Do they have a hoodie Mafia at your High school, Joel<<<

No that's not an issue at the school/s he's referring to.

But the damn pants-below-the-ass thing is still strong there.

And man, more & more these days I picture Thom like this...

Queeg.jpg

But still most always like this...

kingman.jpg

BTW, I apologize if those images are uncivil.

I'm not a leftist, but I am a baby-boomer.

And based on the type of beer I like I've been told I'm uncivilized in general.

>>>But the damn pants-below-the-ass thing is still strong there.

People still do that?

wrong thread...

No shit, 1991 called and wanted their fashion back. Oh and they said to cut that mullet, too.

It's a suburban wanna-be thing with some teens around here.

And of course some local bangers still play that fool stuff too.

To me they look like 40-year-olds in Chuck Taylors.

Sad.

Trump sucks. Continue to stand up for yourself and your rights but move on with life if you haven't yet. Stop reading the news so much. Have a good Friday.
