My Mirning Jacket at the Greek Theater

Forums:

OK. I am compelled to self report that I attended the MMJ show last night largely because Tom and others in this board told me the show I had seen on Mount Tam years ago was not representative of what they do. Other folks off the black screen said the same. So I went last night with a group of friends that love the band and would be fun to party with no matter what.

Well, that was one of the best old school Rock shows I have seen in years! I didn't know a single song but I was moved! Hatdo driving guitars mixed with great keys, a drummer that's a madman, acoustic interludes and Jom James commanding voice with perfect pitch, emotion and power.

just a great time with rock and roll. It made me feel good about the world for three hours.....!

Woz. Thanks for that report. That was exactly my experience a couple of years ago and I'm completely on the bus. Love that band and Yim Yames is one of a kind.

I had the same experience. Saw them years ago and thought they were good but boring. I saw them two years ago and thought they were rocking and a really good time.

They can b a mixed bag. some shows, or even parts of shows, r certainly stronger than others and Jim is prone to flights of fancy with instincts for teases and covers and eccentric flourishes that don't always pan out, but they r a very special band; easily one of the most notable live acts of the new millennium.

I thought last night got off to a slow start but the second half delivered pretty strong.

nice that people r still discovering them and experiencing the joy, power and wonderment they r capable of producing

Sigh. I had a ticket but couldn't motivate to get up to Berkeley on a Friday night. Even though it wasn't sold out and I knew that the legendary but difficult Greek wouldn't be as challenging to navigate as it can be, the ever growing Bad Lance won the argument last night.

A friend who is a fan was there with his two sons who absolutely love MMJ, and he reported that they played a lot of slower ballads that didn't really grab him but that both his boys loved it, and he remarked that he was reminded again of what a raw guitar band they are.

And that's really the thing about My Morning Jacket. They are definitely NOT a jamband yet they can be so many different things on any given night that a particular show will work for one person but not another, and vise versa the next night. They are chameleon-like in how they flow seamlessly through different sonic & thematic styles, and yet they're refined at everything they do. But in the end they're just a great rock 'n roll band.

And yeah, that drummer is the shit. He is not "busy" and never over-plays, but his playing is heavy and is always completely in the pocket and driving the groove. In certain ways he reminds me of John Bonham, and he's probably my favorite rock drummer these days.

Anyway, I'm bummed to have missed it but am glad to hear others made it, and it's always very cool when someone discovers that something is good after not thinking so before (atta' boy Woz!).

JLP posted something last night that resonated with me... before I understood; I didn't.

Profound words, and a good lesson for all of us.

So, keep going to the shows!

should have went, it's been a few years.

great band. they make me shake my head, which is what you want.

1st saw them at the local hob in i think '05 and was on the bus immediately.

I don't have a strong opinion one way or the other about the band itself, but always thought it's funny how fans might refer to them as simply "jacket".
