We could definitely use some new (virtual) faces around here, and I like that your friend isn't from the US too. How did you come to meet Momodou, Hoover?
Grateful Dean is thinking about joining, too, and he's been to Gambia! He got run out when some local politician accused him of screwing his wife and plotting to take over his political machine.
Another interesting factoid is that the country is actually named "The Gambia", so if you've been referring to Ukraine as "The Ukraine", you should transplant the "the" from eastern Europe to western Africa.
I don't know if he will sign up or not. We've been chatting for about a week and he's shared some videos of Gambian music with me and he takes pictures of his daily life there. I gave him a link to The Viva and told him he should consider signing up. We'll see if he chooses too or not.
Timmy, could you share some of the Gambian music with us?
I have to say, thanks to your thread I've done a tiny bit of research to be more informed about where Gambia is and what's up with Gambia, so thanks for that.
Africa is shrouded in so much prejudice and projection from the West, that it's hard for me to know what life is really like there. I feel like Western Africa, in this particular region, has a lot of political instability as well as ethnic rivalries that are ancient. Further, these problems were either created or made much worse through colonialism, which in corporate economic terms, is still kind of the reality today. I wonder what life is like in Banjul. What a trip! The country is essentially just a strip of land along a river, but of course you have to imagine that there is millenia of history involved in these land distributions and their history.

I'm can't extract the video he sent me in the Twitter message. The video he sent was random shots of landscape and wildlife and a guy playing a stringed gourd instrument.
This artist from the 70s Ifang Bondi is pretty rad though.
Timmy, that link is pretty rad. I'm constantly surprised by how much good music comes out of Nigeria, Gambia, Cameroon. Seems like back in the 70s in particular there was some really good stuff. Have you heard Bop Daddy? Nigerian rap. Good stuff, apparently it's playing a lot these days over there.
