My dog had a Botfly

Forums:

"It's not Covid", "but it ain't good".

Dog started getting a lump on her side. She's an old dog and has lumps and moles in several places so I wasn't very concerned. But this started to grow quickly and then I see black stuff on her fur. So I used warm water to get to the root of the problem and I find a hole about 1/4 inch in diameter and in the hole is something that might be moving. Yikes! Start squeezing and the expected pus and gore is coming but then there is this unidentifiable "thing" poking out. Keep squeezing and eventually pull out the "thing". Equal parts WTF, and disgust. Now looking at the "thing" and it looks organized and segmented. Not just an abscess pus ball or a cyst. Sent a picture around and a friend said "Botfly". Sure enough. Apparently, the egg can get in there through a mosquito bite or by eating a rabbit turd. Then you become the host of the Botfly party until it erupts like freaking Alien. Dog was unfazed but I'm not sure if I will ever unsee this. Just when you think you've seen it all....

Shit, S'twang. Thanks for the heads up. I'll keep a lookout on  my pal . White Boxerdogs are prone for growths at at  younger ages like you described. That was some good pickin and diggin you did.

Shock value must 9f been off scale.

I've watched all three makes of The Thing, (from outer space) in the last short while.

Happy for you and the mutt it didn't morph into some unattainable plant based shape-shifting entity from outer space.

Good catch, A.

Fucking parasites. Be gone, I tell ya.

Botfly larvae is a delicacy among the Inuit people, who scrape it off reindeer carcass.  Tastes like milk they say.

Lame racistish joke in these times.  I don't care, it's not mine,  just repeating from a Alaskan friend 9f mine a long time ago.

What's the difference between an Inuit women and a killer whale?

50 lbs and a flannel shirt.

Flame away,  I'll check in a couple weeks.

OK, I'll bite.

Racism, sexism, and body-shaming.

Orcas haven't commented yet.

Knew a guy who was a marine biologist who got a bot fly bite in Belize on his forehead. He thought it was cool to let it grow. He could feel the thing moving around in there. He finally had to pop it out because the movement was keeping him up at night.

ew

glad the dogo is ok

Ewww... I've had a weird bump on the inside of my wrist for awhile...that seems to inflate and deflate... and I've done some jungle adventures...  I don't feel any creepy crawlers in there... but thanks for the post, as I had never heard of these.

Doggo is doing fine. The hole is closing and there seems to be no infection. Which brings me to my fascination with the parasite. While I was pretty horrified by the experience, I find myself intrigued by the process and mechanisms at play. While the larvae does eat a hole to escape the host, it administers an anesthetic to slip out unnoticed. It also puts out an antibiotic to keep the host from infection. Pretty clever. It also has tiny barbs to hold itself in place until launch time. Evolution baby. That being said, I hope to never deal with one again.

I've read that parasites die (in humans) if one consumes pumpkin seeds (pepitas)...

From a random Google search -- unverified but interesting to read....

Well then, squirrels are good to go. Also, that's so Boulder ;)

Clicked the link.

Don't think I'd trust any site that spells "voila" as "Wa-La".

Had to stop myself from saying "viola" instead of voila this day lol
