02-20-91 Oakland Coliseum, CA

Mickey and his Planet Drum buddies, with a little bit of Jerry noodling at times.  One of my trippiest GD experiences.

DUUUUUUDE...

Drumz:  3-17-88 HJK (the night of the Hey Jude breakout) ~ basically Hamza El Din & Mickey each on a large hand drum and Billy banging a little drum between his knees. Hamza was also chant/singing.

Space: off the top of my head 6-16-90. Huge jam out of Terrapin evolves (devolves?) into space which leads to Mickey coming out to bash the beam for a bit into a China Doll that Jerry almost forgets to sing, (he spits out the first line in double-time at the very last moment).

Also remember 6-28-92 Deer Creek

Pretty much 92-95

12/30/89 w/Airto & Flora.  Too bad it was Buzzkilled by I Will Take You Home . . .

Prob shoreline 95 with the monks chanting.

Love that whole 12/30/89 show you mention above, Bob

Pauly Pavillion (UCLA) 1978

Always loved it when the Pranksters got involved during the drums / space, but, really really liked it when Hamza el Din and co (including Bill Walton) joined the drummers at Pauly Pavillion the night before they closed Winterland.  Had the audience clapping in 11,  then the band joined them for a rare "Ollin Arageed"....   epic!  And not a bad lead up to that during the 2nd set drums either (w/ Lee Oscar at the end);  I really enjoyed the Big Screen set up above the stage.  They had a slide show of the Dead in Egypt from a few months earlier, and the show had almost a family Christmas party type of a feel...  and how can you not love seeing pics of Jerry riding a camel during Mama Tried, LOL....  or Kesey on top of a pyramid duing Promised Land, did I say Epic?!?

Be another good show for an official release!

The monks at Shoreline was cool

12/31/78 was really far out, river music for sure

And I must say that I've very much enjoyed the Dead & Co. D&S I've seen

But I think I enjoyed this one the most...

10/15/83 Hartford Civic. Jam out of China Doll all the way through to the first notes of Saint Steven. Was pretty sinister.

Drums>Earthquake Space - Hartford, CT 4/18/82

Drums>The Raven Space - Baltimore, MD 4/19/82

There was a MSG show where they mic'd some Angel's Harley.  '79?

5/8/81 Nassau Col., Ken Kesey came out and played harmonica during the drums space segment.

1/29/87 Chinese New Years. I was there for the dragon parade and was happy.

10/11/83 MSG, Space>St. Stephen was for the ages.

Vegas '92 with the lightning drums into Spanish Jam. E-lectric

5/10/2009

They had a troupe of Fire Dancers perform during Drums. It was fun to watch.

soooooo much space...........   we going to need maps.

Ohr ... with number one and two.

the shoreline one with the sugar mag foreshadowing...

10/31/91 ~ Oakland Coliseum ~ * with Gary Duncan, guitar & ** with Ken Kesey rap about the death of Bill Graham (and his own son") Was compelling and chilling. What church should be like.

"What do you think of your blue eyed boy NOW, Mr. Death?!"

Drumz > Space went back into Dark Star with Owsley dancing a graceful Waltz with a damsel, both in formal attire. Truly amazing and poignant.

Chinese New Year on 02/27/94 in Oakland was far out with the dragons and the whole production.  Had no idea that was coming.   Plus the Cosmic Charlie tease.

>>>>Vegas '92 with the lightning drums into Spanish Jam. E-lectric

Yes.  Every time Mickey would hit the thunder thingy, a bolt of lighting would appear in the sky.  Wild!

>>>5/10/2009  They had a troupe of Fire Dancers perform during Drums

That was the best post GD drumz I have seen.  The fire dancers were a nice touch.   I also like how Bill & Mickey have been feeling more free to do the electronica thing in the post GD world.  Not a fan of EDM in general, but it can be good in moderation.

7/18/90 - crazy, psychotic laughing amongst the accompanying psychedelia

'92 Auburn Hills - train whistle (why was this NOT @ GD50?)

'94 Rosemont - Ken Nordine "how are things in YOUR town!?!"

TimeBanditsMap.jpg

I haz space maps .....

I can see The Rainforest Benefit Space from 88 in there.

"I was in DC when I heard the news......"

Train whistle  @ a MSG

StrawBud, I was at all 3 of the shows you listed.

I believe the Ken Nordine Space was 3/11/93.yes

Thanks Deadly -

I believe you are correct and I stand corrected....they all blend into one. Those were all some Good Times for sure! Drumz-Space was oftentimes my favorite part of shows.

...12/30/89 was certainly a mind-melter as well

All the shows combine....

They melt into a dream.heart

New years eve 83/84 at the San Francisco Civic. Was upstairs and my wife and I walked into the hall. Girl skipped by and rubbed my belly saying happy new year and I was in a field of purple light listening to the drums.   When I got back I found my wife and asked what she saw.   She. Said I vanished in front of her eyes.

Baltimore 82 Raven space was my most out there space I saw. Pure craziness. They never did it that weird regularly or ever except for Hartford the day before.

I like that story Richie.

Oddyseus saw that 5/8/81 Nassau show with Kesey on harmonica. Was a senior in HS and my dad got me the tickets when he was on a business trip to Long Island. It was a friday but I got off of school as my dad talked to them. I was attending an alternative hippy school in Maryland at the time. My first NYC area shows.I was totally impressed by the incredible energy. Never saw it again except for maybe Giants 89.

This very unique jam from Vegas 5/29/92 that goes into drums/space is one of my all time fav's, very electronica.  Night before the above mentioned thunder/lightning show in Vegas (all 3 shows were great, unique for 1992).  The Jamming starts around 1:39.  Note Phil sets up the "I'm A Man" bass jam, then loops it & the drummers take over totally twisting it around.  You can also see Deb Koons sitting behind Jerry.  Also Jerry in almost short shorts.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_s8hFix_dc

Im A Man thing starts @ 1:48:30.  It's Phil in short shorts, not Jerry.  Jerry may have worn short shorts @ 1 of the other nites.  I knew the guys who made these videos (I used to bring their gear in w/my taper tix) - gotta give them credit, they knew pretty well who to have the camera focused on most of the time (unlike the "professional" videographers who were often filming Mickey's foot when Jerry or Phil were shredding it up).

>>> Phil's Barbary Coast Space:

I was there:

Painted Mandolin  reminded me of this one. It was the weirdest, most theatrical thing I had ever seen The Dead do at the time. The element of surprise was Phil taking the mike for the first time that I'd ever seen,  and he was bellowing out that creepy, ominous  poem about the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. Bobby & Phil were pretending that things were "Falling from the ceiling" , as I recall. It was thrilling and quite bizarre, with the green stage lighting and all. Turns out it was the anniversary of that terrible Quake. Good stuff !

I was at that SF '83/'84 NYE show, Richie, and now I understand why I didn't see you.

thanks for the weird phil space. never heard it i don't think

Great show 4/18/82

I concur with the 4/18/82 Hartford Earthquake space ... That was cool . The pre - St. Stephen space in the fall of '83 at Hartford had nice interplay between Jerry and Bob ...

The drums/space were like a work in progress, with unfinished business, encouraging you to go to the next show or a reprise to find out where we are going to land.

The older shows had that energy before the band even got on the stage.

I am going to check these all out.

I enjoyed immensely the Terrapin>Jam>Space>China Doll from shoreline 90. That was different for the era

My favorite of all time, that I didn't see, is 11/1/85.

Most unique I saw must have been Deer Creek 89, mostly because of the Close Encounters Jam.

That is Manasha Matheson Garcia (mother of Keelin) and definitely NOT the Dark One.

10/26/89 - DS>space>DS>space>Drums>space>The Wheel - at least thats how i remember it tho, honestly, there was a 5 strip AND a lot of liquid involved for me....

Drums>Earthquake Space - Hartford, CT 4/18/82

Drums>The Raven Space - Baltimore, MD 4/19/82

Those were the best I attended.

I really like the Drums-Ollin Arageed-Space-Fire from Egypt a lot!

I don't know if its the most unique Merriweather Post Pavilion 6/20/83 a little wild weather night

super loved the Edie Brickell one at msg

My HomeGirl Cindy always loved the ones where they train whistled thru the end of space lol

12/31/78

It was all I could do to stay in my body.

2/11/89 with Airto, Diana Moreira and Flora Purim was fantastic and went into a rare post drums Eyes of the World.

That 6/20/83 was my first show.

I wasn't at Riverbend in '85, but I always enjoyed listening to the drums and space segment of that show.  Pretty hot second set all around.  One of the handful of Cryptical shows that year.

https://archive.org/details/gd85-06-24.sbd.miller.25315.sbeok.shnf/gd85-...

My only MD show was the Raven show.

And there was a MSG show where they mic'd a motorcycle.

I was at that Riverbend shoe.

ONE of my faves.

>>>3-24-92 Palace Wizard of Oz 'scarecrow' space with the train horn

That was a good one!

6/2/95 with the monks

can't remember if it was the first, second or both nights vegas 91 with the slots and sinatra mixed into d/s

6/30/85 Merriweather Post Pavilion

Last day that MDMA was legal.  Allegedly, the whole band was rolling.  Great drums and space with pinball machine sound effects.

^haha. awesome.

While objecting to the form of the question (if something is unique, there is only one of it.  It is either unique or not. No such thing as "most unique".) I do concur

with others that "Raven Space" in Baltimore stands unique.
