Most Depressing Writers Ever (non Russian)

Forums:

John Steinbeck without a doubt is the most depressing writer I've ever read. Grapes + Mice n Men were required reading back in HS. Deeply depressing. Grapes was more a history lesson on the dust bowl depression, sad sad stuff.  But when they ever took the lifelong devoted pet dog out to shoot because had a bit of an odor, and the owner hardly cared in the least, that was too much for me. I put down Of Mice And Men and couldn't pick it back up for a week. WTF Steinbeck, couldn't they just give him a bath ?

George Orwell - 1984.  Love is defeated by one's greatest fear.  Dark...

And if mistreating an animal gets you, Ras, I'll add the dog in Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five.

Depressing thread to start the day!  Time to put on some uplifting music.

Thom or Bryen.

Haven't thought about that dog in decades but I saw in todays paper our local Landmark Community Theatre is putting on a production of Of Mice And Men, brought it all back. Amazing the shit you forget, but then one thing triggers the memory.

Yeah 1984 + Slaughterhouse 5 were great, lots of fear,  but for just down home rip your heart out sad - John Steinbeck

The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah is just pure despair porn. Saw they are making a movie out of it. Just avoid
