More Pete Sears love

Forums:

We had Pete Sears, who plays with me in the Green Leaf Rustlers, come and play keyboards with us in May, and he’s not only a wonderful gentleman, but also truly the finest musician I’ll ever share the stage with. You get goose bumps the way he plays—the music that he brings, the rock-and-roll, the architecture, is just a dream come true. I’ve been friends with Barry Sless since 2004, when we played together in Phil and Friends, and we all live in Marin. That’s how the Green Leaf Rustlers started: I’d be taking some guitar lessons from Barry and, inevitably, we’d jam on some of this Johnny Horton, Merle Haggard, Waylon stuff, and we all love The Byrds, The Burritos and The New Riders. So I’ve gotten to play with Pete a lot during the last couple of years.

Que the Chris Robinson haters in one, two, three....

He doesn’t appear to be the nicest person when I watch him up close  and off the stage.... But he does some nice stuff on occasion God bless rock ‘n’ roll

Weds @ Union Square Live...

he is my favorite member of the david nelson band.

he is the force that levitates.

he is a fucking wizard of the highest order.

my favorite bass player hands down.

why's he not nice? seems like a total classy gentleman in my limited encounters.

I think lltd means CR ain't nice when he's in diva mode.

CR is an audio toothache.

For the most part.  He's gotten through some songs without being an irritant.

I have no idea if he's a deeck.

Pete Sears digs deep.

I have a buddy whom I need to see Pete play live. I'd even take him to a Moonalice show.

Hands down my favorite bass player. And a truly fine gentleman also.

Turtle, JJ was talking about Robinson, not Sears.

In my experiences interacting with Pete Sears he has never been anything but a totally cool, extremely humble person, and I like him as a musician. He's been around so long and done so many things I bet he could write a damn interesting book, but I figure he's too humble for that. He just likes to play music.

As for Robinson, I've been around him a bit as well over the years. In my personal experience he's always been very cool to me and those around him, but I don't know him and I've heard the stories. Ultimately it's easy to judge from afar.

As a performer I think he's a very good rock 'n roll singer and I've seen many shows with his various bands that I have very much enjoyed. I don't think he fits into the Grateful Dead catalog very well, but he sings the rockers well enough and overall I like what he's doing with his career nowadays.

His male Janis persona is hammie but not T-Ham bad.

Pete is a giant among mere mortals. No bassist I’d rather see, don’t care who he’s playing with. He’s a separate show all by himself.

CR holds a pretty mean guitar.

pete goes off at the 3 minute mark.....

I totally meant Chris

and yes I don’t know him at all maybe it’s just I vibe I get with so many women and Chris Robinson and rockstar but he is also kind of human and humble I guess    From a far it seems like he can hold a grudge

I totally meant Paint Sears is the kindest gentleman that I know of in rock ‘n’ roll and he fiercely levitates gently

If that Oxymoron makes any sense to some of you

It so happens I ran into Pete last night and showed him the quote

he seemed a bit stunned and was going to go read it later

I was tearing up as he was reading it

long live gentlemen

long live rock

long live Pete Sears

>>>I have a buddy whom I need to see Pete play live

I bet I know who.

Pete was great with us at during the 2010 East Coast mini-run. I have his "how to play piano" book. We were a small crowd at the Wonder Bar in Asbury, and neither DNB, nor Moonalice, was headlining (Big Brother and the Holding Company got that slot), but Pete was friendly, approachable, and honest about the situation at the time regarding the payday with Moonalice vs. the commercial viability of the DNB.

And he's just a beast on the bass.

 A gentle beast

And that is not an oxymoron

^ that show was a benefit for Bay Area activist and Vietnam war veteran Brian Wilson, who in 1987 lost both of his legs blocking a train at the concord naval weapons station in protest of US weapons being sold to South American contras. He was one of the people who started Veterans For Peace.

When Jerry was asked by Nick Gravenites to play the benefit, he agreed to as long as he didn’t have to sing.

I spent a few months there in the 90's. Some disturbing footage in the video. Brings back memories.

I love Pete. But can someone tell me why he's replaced Bobby Vega in the ZERO reunion?

My top list bass players are all English dudes. Not sure why that is but in my world, it's true.

^ Phil is not on your top list of bass players?
