Michael Cohen’s Lawyers Expected To Stop Representing Him In FBI Probe: Reports

The attorneys are reportedly likely to step down after a review of Cohen’s seized documents is complete.

The warrant is probably already out.  Curious to see what broke him to flip? Keep this guy alive long enough to spill the beans and then throw him on the street.

Shit's a brewing...

Perhaps, but it's just as likely that Cohen not being able to pay his legal bills is the real culprit here. It doesn't take long for a legal firm billing out services at 1500+ an hour to build up a rather hefty bill. Sometimes the bill for document review tops the tens of millions mark.

I'm no lawyer, but I'm pretty sure a law firm is prohibited from cutting off a client due to their ability to pay. Once you're engaged you're in it for the long haul.

lawyers needing lawyers...

Ned - no.  This is an everyday occurrence. That is why lawyers will set a fee schedule on a criminal case so they can monitor and possibly run while the getting's still good. In a civil case a lawyer can make an assumption that they will collect enough to cover their cost + and wait until the back end to collect their 33%.

Nope, as long as the lawyer gives them reasonable warning and time to comply, they can generally drop a client who won't pay, though the details can vary state to state

Maybe its a CO statute. I'm gonna go with that...

Under the Rules of Professional Responsibility, a lawyer is permitted to terminate an attorney-client relationship if, among other things, "the client fails substantially to fulfill an obligation to the lawyer regarding the lawyer's services and has been given reasonable warning that the lawyer will withdraw unless the obligation is fulfilled."  RPC 1.16(a)(5).

At least that's the rule in Oregon, but other jurisdictions will have similar provisions.

His doc review lawyers specialized in doc review.

Now he needs criminal lawyers, so the doc review lawyers are done.

He doesn’t need a team of lawyers if he plans on pleading guilty. Trump promised him a pardon. No need to flip or waste money on lawyers.

Besides, he’s too chicken shit to flip on the Mob (and Vlad).

He's white. He won't see jail.

It’s one of the great things about being white, never going to jail.

unless, you are poor and white...

They only go to jail for a week. They get out. If they want to go back they can but no judge is making them stay there.

The news story above stated several sources say its about money and a dispute with the Trump campaign on who will be footing the bill for the defense.  Good luck finding someone to take on the case after your first set of attorneys fired you as a client for non-payment.

I think Mannfred is correct. The document lawyers are done.

The only attorneys that "specialize" in document review are the lowly associates who spend their first couple years in a law firm stuck in a room with stacks of documents (or now days with discs of searchable pdf files) to review.

The law firm representing Cohen - McDermott, Will & Emery LLP - specializes in corporate and tax law, including white collar criminal defense.   They probably had just enough of a retainer left to finish the document review.

Or maybe it finally dawned on them that Cohen is white and therefor it doesn’t matter what sort of representation he gets.

He’s good to go. The ol’ Caucasian Shuffle**

**(I was hoping to come up with something better than “shuffle” to go with “Caucasian”, something with a hard “c” or even a “k”. If someone comes up with something feel free to chime in thanks.)

Some of the (white) Watergate guys served up to 18 months in country-club prison.

Caucasian Kaka?

just watched a netflix prison doc.

white guy wrongly convicted of killing his own mother. 26 yrs...many of it in solitary.

it happens..

There are whites and then there is white trash.  The latter usually ends up doing harder time.
