Merl Saunders & Friends #3

^ There are better quality versions around. This happened the weekend before the 85 Greeks. Good times.

I have a special fondness for this show and other Haight Street Fairs, as our company's retail store was located on Haight Street a few stores down from the main stage. (The I-Beam was a few doors down and the Full Moon Saloon was across the street.)

"Cool,... Bob and Brent and Merl and John Cipollina are playing right outside our door!"  Merl headlined the Fair for 20 some consecutive years, and each year there were rumors of Jerry appearance.

Here's one that provides the vibe of the day a bit more accurately:

@Alan R   Cool video, Looks like booze is the vibe of the day. Would have loved to have been there. Only saw a few GD shows the Bay area.

During the mid to late 80s (pre gentrification) the neighborhood was transitioning from mainly hippy street kids to punk street kids. Never a dull moment on the sidewalks -- always an edge of danger between competing factions.

When the Dead played Bay area shows, there was always an extra influx of tour rats. Our store (a hologram art gallery) was very popular as we had very colorful trippy stuff in the windows and didn't charge admission. There was some mind bending art on display inside.

Perhaps Bryen remembers me kicking him out of our doorway -- I used to let them sleep in the alcove if they didn't piss there.

on a related tangent - a vid of Weir and Brent together around that timeframe --  Hey Jude 1986 (Brent on grand piano)

^^ and then the weekend after the Greeks - free show in the park June 23, 1985.

(I missed this one because I had left to do summer tour, but heard it was fun. Outdoor shows in SF depend on the weather -- summer can be cold.)

I don't think he is old enough for that......

Alan, I was definitely at your gallery during that time. That was really cool.

And I think one of my friends actually bought something from you!

Good memories, thanks.
