Lotteries - A tax on people who are bad at math.

I throw a few bucks down sometimes when I visit Idaho or Wyoming. I won $500 two years ago in Wyoming.

Perfect.

Always wondered if a few million wasn't enough for these folks. They go crazy on the huge jackpots that are massively lower odds to win, and let the everyday(or twice a week) contests alone.  I never play the huge jackpots. I only play super lotto maybe a dollar every couple months. When a wild hair gets me.

Can't win if you don't play.

$1.6 billion?   Shit, I will buy a ticket for entertainment purposes only (not as an investment).

I only buy tickets when i'm acquiring liquor, figure if i'm tossing cash for perilous entertainment might as well lose that extra yard.  I'm pretty sure that liquor store has never sold a winning ticket, nor has our city, nor the county, but our state has...

If I remember I'll buy one.

Gotta be in it to win it.

Bought one at the liquor store. What the fuck only 2 buck.

>>>>I'm pretty sure that liquor store has never sold a winning ticket, nor has our city, nor the county, ...  <<<<

That place is due!

wink

>>> They go crazy on the huge jackpots that are massively lower odds to win,

The odds to win Powerball are 292.2 million to 1 no matter the size of the jackpot. Might as well play the big ones if you're going to play at all.

For two dollars I can ruin someones life!

I actually wouldn't want to win that much cash. It would ruin my (or anyone's) life. A couple mil - sure, but hundreds of millions? No thanks. It would be too much work just to give it away.

^^^ 1st world problem^^^  I'd like to have that problem........

The "lottery": a good metaphor for those who support the GOP at this stage of the game.

^^^ What's the phrase? You cannot win if you do not play?

Some people play for a prize, some people play for their lives.

Some people play for a prize, some people FIGHT for their lives.......................

I won I won!!!!   Ok, only 40$ and a free ticket, but it provided for a nice roast, and a pint of whiskey for Joan!

Any zones in SC, did you win?

Wow no one won

Never mind I guess when you check in CA in only tells you if someone in CA won

From the NY Times:

Someone in South Carolina Won the $1.54 Billion Mega Millions Jackpot

By Matt Stevens

Oct. 23, 2018

We are sorry to report you did not win the Mega Millions jackpot — unless you’re one very lucky person in South Carolina.

Someone there likely couldn’t believe their eyes when the magic numbers for the $1.54 billion prize were announced Tuesday night: 5, 28, 62, 65, 70; and the Mega Ball: 5. A winning ticket was sold somewhere in the state, though no one has publicly come forward.

Mega Millions, which revised the jackpot on Wednesday morning from the previous amount of $1.6 billion, said there were no other winners out of the 15.7 million people who bought tickets. But 36 tickets nationwide were oh-so-close, matching five of six numbers.

“I didn’t win the lottery, but I’m still planning on dying alone,” the TV host and comedian Conan O’Brien said.

Lotto fever has gripped the nation in recent weeks as jackpots have continued to swell. Tuesday’s $1.54 billion prize — which offered a lump sum of $878 million — was initially advertised as the largest lottery prize ever, surpassing the $1.59 billion Powerball jackpot drawn in 2016. But when the amount was lowered on Wednesday, it became the second largest ever.

Mega Millions tickets are sold in 44 states as well as Washington, D.C., and the Virgin Islands.

Tickets cost $2, which seems like a relatively small price to pay for a chance at becoming rich. But the odds of winning the Mega Millions are about 1 in 302 million.

If you are among the many who did not win on Tuesday, never fear. Wednesday’s Powerball jackpot has grown to $620 million.
